With the extremely late (and cold) northern Alberta summer this year, I am glad to hear they survived at all, and positively thrilled to hear they are thriving! I hope Rae will keep us all posted on which varieties survive the Alberta winter, because if they can survive in Edmonton, they can survive anywhere in the lower 48 states, for sure! And just so that everyone can be on the same page about willow and living willow structures (about which things I have been getting emails with lots of questions....) here are some web sites that I find informative and helpful. Windrush willow in England is where I got many of my willow starts, and they have a great web site with lots of pictures, downloads and info at http://www.windrushwillow.com/ Willow Dreams farm http://www.scrtc.com/~rharrison62/english.html they also have a terrific amount of information on their site. There are several sites of interest on willow growing in England. http://www.livingwillow.co.uk/ is one, and of course the main site of the Basketmakers Association of England is the primary place for professionals to look for info. http://www.basketassoc.org/index.html Then there are the web sites of a few of my favorite teachers, Werner Turtschi in Switzerland http://www.basketry.ch/english-pages.htm and Adrian Charlton in Norfolk http://www.norfolkbaskets.fsbusiness.co.uk/work.htm from whom everyone in the world should have the joy and satisfaction of learning, if they have a chance to arrange it. Worth a trip to England for that class alone! I should have been out raking leaves but... What a great day to stay in a weave. I harvested some honeysuckle vine from the fence in my yard...but now what? Does it get stripped or do you use it the way it is? Anyone know of a good book that has recommendations as to what to do with it? Joanne Dreaming of Hawaii... It is way too far for her to drive to me, but I told her I would put out feelers for instructors closer to her. Can anyone help her? Thanks, Kathy %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weavers Words Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2004 01:07:22 -0800 (PST) From: "Babs Kasper" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com First of all, a big "THANK YOU" to David for all he does to keep use connected. I am one of those lurkers who very seldom contributes, but I always looks forward to receiving and reading WW. I am hoping that someone out there can help me. I want to learn how to do coiling. I am talking about the type of coiling that is done with silk thread wrapped around a core such as paper cord. I know that you can also use other materials as well, such as waxed linen and cotton filled cordage. My problem is that I can't find any instructions on how to do the coiling. How to begin, how many times do you wrap between the stitches, and where to stitch, are just a few of the many questions that I have. Can someone help me or tell me where I can find instructions? Is there a book on this type of coiling? Any information would be greatly appreciated. It was a total surprise because I thought I wasn't in this swap. Some how I didn't receive the email giving me my partners name. It was mailed to me but got zapped into cyberspace. Carrie thought she was forgotten. The coordinator was playing it cool and keeping her finger and toes crossed. She has done a great job. However, all is well and my panic attack is over. The basket I received is a beautiful birch, light and dark cut strips, evenly cut and woven. The shape is lovely and it is slightly swollen with pride, sitting on its little matched corners. I do not have anything like it nor have I made anything like it. It is wonderful Thank You! Cheers Rae %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Antler Basket Classes At East Troy, WI Date: Sun, 14 Nov 2004 09:22:49 -0600 From: "CPeters" To: "David Collins, Jr." November 19-21, 2004--Join us next weekend for the "Wisconsin Deer Hunters Widow's Weekend" of Weaving at the East Troy Basketry Shop in East Troy, WI.
