As for the number of staves, it depends on the type of stave you are using. If you're using 6mm cane staves, you should figure on 2-1/2 to 3 staves per inch of circumference of the basket at the top. If you are using something else, such as 3/8" cherry or oak, you might figure on 2 staves per inch. Regardless of the type of stave you elect to use, work on one fourth of the basket. When you are satisfied with the spacing of that quarter, the remaining 3 quarters should have the same number of staves ... except one of those quarters should have either one more, or one less, so that you end up with an odd number of staves. This will enable you to have a "continuous" weave. Feel free to contact me via email if I can be of help to you. It will take place July 9, 2005 - 8AM to 5PM. Individuals interested in teaching are encouraged to submit Teacher Proposal Forms. We are looking for a variety of 4 hour and 8 hour classes. The cost of the basket/project class should reflect the cost of materials, kit preparation, mold or tool rental, pattern and teacher's fee. We request one form, pattern and colored photograph (not a jpeg image) for each proposed basket/project. You may submit as many proposals as you would like and encourage you to submit at least one 8 hour class and two 4 hour classes. In review of the evaluation forms from 2004, participants showed an interest in having a greater variety of classes in 2005. In addition to the traditional reed baskets, they requested the following - Nantucket/shaker, gourd, pine needle, antler, other naturals and beading. You may visit last year's Internet site at: http://www.geocities.com/midsummerweave/ The deadline for submitting proposals is Saturday, November 6th. Baskets/projects will be reviewed and selected by the MSW committee by Monday, November 22nd. Please email me for the Teacher's Proposal Form. Looking forward to receiving your submissions. Can any one help me? I know the teacher imports hers from England and there maybe people here in the states that would sell it. I am interested in buying some ready to use but would also like to try and cultivate the plant as well. The class was quite interesting but I don't intend to switch to willow completely but would like to repair some willow baskets I have and also would like to learn more about the material. Thanks in advance for your help. I met her at Borders last year and she is one neat woman. She teaches at the academy of arts and at UH adult education, so perhaps a call to either place might turn up something. She isn't a flat reed weaver, though. She does a lot of great looking ribbed baskets and is working with waxed linen. Also, on Maui, there is an arts academy near Kula who sometimes brings in a mainland weaver. I am always looking for an excuse to go to Maui :-) Hopefully this will help. Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 11:51 AM From: Richard Neshek To: davidc@iei.net Dear David, I found your address off a site for Shaker baskets. It was suggested you may be able to help identify a basket that, I believe, is very unique. I, myself, have made baskets, and have always been interested in the styles. This basket is on e-bay right now, listed by my daughter-in-law. She got it at an estate sale and was told it was American Indian. I'm questioning this. It appears more to be Shaker or Nantucket. Could you please enlighten me, if you can? It is item #3936470474. It is the handle that is most interesting. It is formed like an "S". Carved out of wood, when wet, it must have been threaded into the basket rim, then circled back through a loop in the wood and back again through the wood. A master design! Quite possible that you would know who made this basket, simply by the uniqueness of the design? Your input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Kathy neshek@cybrzn.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Swap Update Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2004 10:32 PM From: Cindy Dunham To: davidc@iei.net Hi! If you joined the last swap and are reading this, you are content in the fact that your basket has already been mailed out, as the deadline was yesterday (Saturday). Please remember to let me know when you send/receive your basket. I questioned the participants on whether or not we should do a swap before the holidays. So far, it has been 1/2 and 1/2 on before or after the holidays. I'll wait till all votes are in before I decide. Happy Weaving!
