I believe she lived in Maryland then and perhaps now lives in Penna. I am sure others have more information. Country Seat sells some of her patterns. Karen was the author of some great basket patterns. She also gave an Asian company permission to use / make some of her patterns and those baskets are sold in Joann's Fabric stores: they do have a tag "Karen Traub" baskets Nancy in MD %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Karen Traub Sent: Sunday, October 10, 2004 9:10 PM From: EHBrandt101@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi All, Look at Weavers Words vol 3 Issue 122 and also issue 123. I'm the registrar at a community arts center in Mathews County, VA - a rural county on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. I am desperately in need of a pine needle basketry teacher. Judy Mallow used to come up and teach a workshop here occasionally, but since she's built her new studio, she won't come any more. Ideally the instructor would come from VA, NC, WV, or SC so we can avoid the cost of airfare, which tends to require higher tuition for the class than most of our students can afford. We're in a great area - very beautiful, provide lodging as well as the instructor's required fee and have lots of fun. If you have ideas for instructors or are one yourself, please respond to this email or call me at 804-725-1278. I appreciate your help! Thank You, Valerie Adams Bay School Cultural Arts Center P.O. She is terrific. She often teaches classes to teachers as part of their continuing education. Hope she is still teaching, and if you contact her, say Hi for me. Ignoring the hit which came up with 'recipe. baby cradle cap' I came to your entry for 1998: Wendy - Welcome. There are a number of actual baby cradle patterns available. We still have a few copies of Sharon Wrights "Triple Braid Cradle" which is woven on a wooden base, round reed spokes, footer & border, flat reed body with half-hood. Basket Weaving-Beds & Bassinets; Baskets, Baskets, Baskets #4 & Romancing the Reed are all books containing full size cradles. Was a project I always wanted to do but never did. Oh well, maybe there will be grandchildren some day although we already have and antique cradle & bassinet in our household. Wonderful that you still have your g-g-grandmother's work around. We have a number of blind, basket weaving customers. Most seem to work in round reed. I have become a basket weaver since having my own children, but now there is a grandchild on the way and subject to the parents liking the idea of a willow cradle I would very much like to have a go at making a wooden based rocking cradle. When you say you have 'patterns', are these in books or separate sheets? I look forward to hearing from you. I have some superfine 2.00mm chair cane that sat near a window and some of it turned brown. Can I bleach it to correct the problem? I have a breadbasket mold that is 2.5 X 13.5 x 5.25. How many staves would I need to order? Thank you for your help. I wanted to let people know that I am carrying a small supply of the books to the Michigan convention this week in Grand Rapids, and will arrive at the hotel on Tuesday night. Please contact me if you would like to buy one. The book is not yet officially released, but is available and can be ordered directly through the museum by calling them at 360-993-5679. It costs $24.95 plus $5 shipping and handling, and is a fundraiser for the museum. You can also order it by mail: Clark County Historical Museum, 1511 Main Street, Vancouver, WA 98660. Official release will be concurrent with a basketry exhibition at the museum in December. Authors are Mary Dodds Schlick, Arthur Erickson, Mariana Mace, and me, Kaye Van Valkenburg. The book has chapters on northwest basketry styles, materials, and identification. There is also information on forming a volunteer curatorial committee and caring for baskets. The book is 96 pages and has hundreds of color illustrations. It contains some fairly unique information, such as how to identify various basketry styles in western Washington. The book was produced through a grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust and edited by Julie Daly. And once again, please help us spread the word that this book is available. The museum is trying to sell as many as possible through direct sales to maximize profits to this non-profit organization. Thanks!
