We put the walnuts on the hole in the board and hit them with a hammer. The nut falls through, leaving the hull on the top of the board. It seems time consuming, but works quite well. You can hull a lot of walnuts in a fairly short period of time. It will take place July 9, 2005 - 8AM to 5PM. Individuals interested in teaching are encouraged to submit Teacher Proposal Forms. We are looking for a variety of 4 hour and 8 hour classes. The cost of the basket/project class should reflect the cost of materials, kit preparation, mold or tool rental, pattern and teacher's fee. We request one form, pattern and colored photograph (not a jpeg image) for each proposed basket/project. You may submit as many proposals as you would like and encourage you to submit at least one 8 hour class and two 4 hour classes. In review of the evaluation forms from 2004, participants showed an interest in having a greater variety of classes in 2005. In addition to the traditional reed baskets, they requested the following - Nantucket/shaker, gourd, pine needle, antler, other naturals and beading. You may visit last year's Internet site at: http://www.geocities.com/midsummerweave/ The deadline for submitting proposals is Saturday, November 6th. Baskets/projects will be reviewed and selected by the MSW committee by Monday, November 22nd. Please email me for the Teacher's Proposal Form. Looking forward to receiving your submissions. If you want a darker red you can add a pinch of black. For Green I like the Hunter Green. It is equal parts of Royal Blue and Dark Green. Forest Green also works. It is two parts Dark Green to one part Yellow. I will have over thirty colors of round reed in sizes from #00 to #2 round reed at the Market Place at Michigan Convention. I also have several new kits besides the 36 rib buttocks kits. The convention will be here before we know it. Looking forward to seeing everyone. Karen's Baskets Karen Zane 521 N. Buckingham Ct. There are a bunch of old issues in the Basketry Library at John C Campbell Folk School. In one of the papers I found that she wrote a book "The Mad Weave" Book. If anyone knows where I can get a copy or has one for sale please e mail me privately. I would really appreciate it. I have already checked e bay as well as Amazon.com. As for basket teachers in Makakilo, Hawaii, I only know of a basket teacher on Hickam Air Force Base and also check a shop called Handmade from the Heart in Aiea, behind Cutter Ford. I can't remember the name of the shopping area. Thanks for any help on the book, Joanne Howard Virginia %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Cat Bed Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2004 17:25:29 -0500 From: "East Troy Basketry" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Lorraine Otto has a cat bed pattern made of all round reed. Beth Rodrigues teaches basket making at the Hickam (Air Force Base) Skills and Development Center (not all that far a drive from Makakilo unless it is quitting time--). If so, she can drop by the shop and check out Beth's samples. If she has a friend in the military, they could take her to class. If not, I don't know of any civilians who teach. In fact, there are few weavers left on the island. At one time, you could go to our biggest craft fairs and find 4-5 weavers, we had a small weavers guild--but no more. Tell her to check with Handmade from the Heart in Pearl City--they might know of someone. Thanks, David, for keeping this list going. Even though I no longer weave, it is nice to see what is happening in the basket world... and to hear from old friends. My local Michaels is discontinuing them as not enough are sold. I have enjoyed using rub-ons for years. Recently I put ivy rub-ons on a basket handle and a maple strip side row. That basket sold right away. I put little soldiers on a Christmas sleigh, etc. So easy. Just rub the design with a Popsicle stick-supplied - and its just like you painted the design. Perhaps not enough people know about rub-ons or how to use them. Please try it and maybe they wont stop making rub-ons. Now, I'm off to another craft chain to stock up! I have found that rubber gloves, a hammer and time are what I need to open the hulls. I crack the shell, save the neat and then boil the shells and hulls. I do several batches. I then strain the liquid into an esed ice cram bucket. I use it through out the years. Each time I boil the liquid and strain it before using it. I like the color from the natural dye and the smell found from the commercial products is missing. If I want to lighten the color I rinse the basket after I have dyed it and then polish it with a cloth until the color does not come off. It is my favorite method of dying baskets. Maybe if I didn't try to get so much into a newsletter, I could come out on time. But, I love doing the newsletter and sharing with everyone, and I just have to add one more little thing. Subjects covered are Show Booth Designs and Hints for selling at shows, Antiques and Collectables - Indian Birch Bark baskets and teaching at the Land of Lincoln Basket Guild in Illinois. The free pattern is an Onion Basket, and techniques are twining, reverse twining and wrapping a bundle (of spokes). How to pack a basket is still up. With permission from David Collins of Weaver's Words, I used two subjects from his last newsletter, How to make a basket sit flat, including round with a handle and without a handle and ribbed baskets. The idea of constructing a booth also came from Weaver's Words. I have added some new holiday pages for patterns, kits, and baskets. The newest items are a dummy's form "Sweet Betsy", a sewing basket (Kit of the Month), Gourd Christmas Ornaments and the Onion Basket. All are patterns, some are also kits. I will be posting additional kits soon. Patricia Yunkes Visit my web page at www.patriciabaskets.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Moves And More...
