Someone asked about removing the walnut hulls and still being able to use the nut itself. I don't have first hand knowledge of this, but what my husband's uncle did on the family farm was scatter the walnuts on the driveway and run the car over them several times. The hulls came off, but left the nutshell intact. Uncle Charlie had a gravel drive, so I don't know what it would do to asphalt or concrete, but as the hulls were somewhat crushed that the stain in them might color a concrete driveway. I'd try one or two before I did a whole bunch and ended up with a partially stained driveway. Thank you David for your many years of hard work to keep us chatting! It gives a beautiful shade of red. That lovely shell basket is part of a series of creative shell designs done by Anne Bowers of West Virginia. Her first shell basket won awards at all the major conventions a couple of years ago (NCBA, IBA, AMB). Since then Anne has created several more beautiful shell baskets (and many other designs) and they are just wonderful. I'm not sure she has a pattern for the shells but if you would like I can send you her email address to find out. Cheers, Leanne %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Mid Summer Weave - Request For Teachers Sent: Tuesday, September 28, 2004 9:09 AM From: Bonnie Easterbrooks-Krist To: davidc@iei.net The Heritage Basketry Guild of Dayton, Ohio has set the date for our 2005 Mid Summer Weave. It will take place July 9, 2005 - 8AM to 5PM. Individuals interested in teaching are encouraged to submit Teacher Proposal Forms. We are looking for a variety of 4 hour and 8 hour classes. The cost of the basket/project class should reflect the cost of materials, kit preparation, mold or tool rental, pattern and teacher's fee. We request one form, pattern and colored photograph (not a jpeg image) for each proposed basket/project. You may submit as many proposals as you would like and encourage you to submit at least one 8 hour class and two 4 hour classes. In review of the evaluation forms from 2004, participants showed an interest in having a greater variety of classes in 2005. In addition to the traditional reed baskets, they requested the following - Nantucket/shaker, gourd, pine needle, antler, other naturals and beading. You may visit last year's Internet site at: http://www.geocities.com/midsummerweave/ The deadline for submitting proposals is Saturday, November 6th. Baskets/projects will be reviewed and selected by the MSW committee by Monday, November 22nd. Please email me for the Teacher's Proposal Form. Looking forward to receiving your submissions. In the town are lots of people who make "things" to go with these baskets, and basket related items. There are also shops that sell basket related items. The sweater with the basket on it probably came from one of these places. You probably have to buy it there. The factory there is a great place to visit, and there are bus tours. Would make a great trip for you and some friends. Summer is best as there are a lot of outdoor sellers. While these baskets are not my thing, I visited when I lived in Ohio. It was fascinating, and I learned many things about basket making. Some of the things that impressed me was the size of the place, how fast the people worked, the molds they worked on and the machine that held the mold. What a magnificent tool...and I do love tools. To Sharon who is looking for a guild or teacher near Youngstown or Pittsburgh. To my knowledge, there are no basket guilds close to those areas. However, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts on 5th and Shadyside Sts. in Shadyside (Pittsburgh) does occasionally have basket classes. I have taught there, but it is really pretty far for me for one class. The teacher there is really very good. There is also Sister Donna, a nun who teaches in the basement of a convent (can't remember the name) on Rt 19 near Cranberry, which is not too far from New Castle. It is also not too far from the turnpike. If they want to travel 2 hours, they can contact me at patsbaskets@pennswoods.net. Hope all this information helps. We use to use rubber gloves and old clothing and break the black hulls away from the walnut with hammer or brick (messy) and fingers pulling it away. Then soak in tub of water to use for dye. I make pine needle baskets and use slices of the walnut hull in my baskets. After the nut is dried, slice with a band saw. Blow the dust away, push out the nut meat and bag in zip lock bags and freeze. Pine Needle Granny Kaye in Altoona FL. Where I just got electricity back this morning after the hurricanes. Some time ago, I purchased some Xenor reed and found it to be of exceptional quality. I'm hoping that you can give me a phone number, mailing address, or email address to contact this company, directly, to purchase more of their reed and other basket supplies they offer. I'd really appreciate any help you could give me in contacting this company. Thanks very much for your time and consideration.
