I would like my kids to make a basket during this time. A couple of years ago, the forum was very helpful in finding me a pattern to make with Girl Scouts of all ages. I still have a few of these basket kits left, but with no ordering information, and I can't remember where I got them. They have a round base with pre-drilled holes for round reed stakes. The stakes are pushed through the holes, then intertwined on the bottom, becoming secure. Then a tapered 1/4" weaver is started at the base and it is continuous weave from there to the top, where it is tapered off again, and the stakes are bent over and woven for a finished edge. The only thing I ordered from this company were the pre-drilled bases. I had the reed already. If anyone can help me with ordering information, I'd be most appreciative. You can contact me directly at chrismel@cablenet-va.com, if you want. Thank You! Sent: Monday, September 06, 2004 7:05 AM From: To: Cc: Hi, Nita! I saw your post today and thought I'd share my baby basket experience. When my youngest was on the way I made a divided caddy basket that was really handy. One compartment fit the wipes container, the middle I used for diaper cream, powder, changing pads, etc., and the other side fit a bunch of diapers. It was nice to have a mobile changing station so that I didn't always have to trudge upstairs, and it was wonderful for the 2 hour car trip for visits to Grammy & Paw's. The full basket of supplies lasted for the duration of the trip, visit, and trip home; and again everything was very handy--not like digging things out of an overstuffed diaper bag! Anyway, I have bent your ear long enough. I loved my caddy basket so much I made one for my sister, who used it through 2 kids. I wrote up the pattern and you can see it at my website, www.gypsybaskets.com on basket page 3, or at basketpatterns.com. Hope This Helps! I'm moving from Mass to Vermont and hope when the dust settles that there will be time to weave again. I'm looking for someone who would like an old wicker loveseat and chair in need of work. They are both made of reed. I can e-mail photos to anyone interested. I'm moving next week but the pieces can be stored here (south of Boston) for a time. This book was edited by Julie Daly and written by volunteers Mary Dodds Schlick, Arthur Erickson, Mariana Mace, and Kaye Van Valkenburg. It is a beautiful full-color book (8 1/2" x 11", 96 pages) with hundreds of photos and general information on west coast basketry from California up through Alaska. It also has chapters on caring for baskets and forming a volunteer curatorial group. The book is a fundraiser for the Clark County Historical Museum in Vancouver, Washington, and was produced through a generous grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust. Please help us spread the word! The book is available from the Clark County Historical Museum, 1511 Main Street, Vancouver, WA 98660, tel. 360-993-5679. It costs $24.95 plus $5 shipping and handling, (WA residents add $1.92 sales tax). They accept Visa or Mastercard. The book will also be available at the Columbia Basin Basketry Guild fall retreat, and I will hand-carry a small supply to the Michigan convention. Only 1000 copies were printed. I will be happy to answer any questions about the book, but will be out of the country Sept. 15-30. Please feel free to share information about this book with any interested party, or to include it in basketry newsletters. Thanks! It was a fabulous class! She is a wonderful teacher and a lot of fun! This class was in Scottish country baskets, using rib techniques. It was part of Scottish Heritage week at the John C. Campbell Folk School http://www.folkschool.com/ in Brasstown, NC. We wove an egg basket, a hen basket, a potato strainer, and an unusual fleece gathering basket that looks like a football with an opening in the side. It is used to gather fleece that gets caught on fences or trees. Then the basket is placed by the fire to warm up the fleece so it's easier to spin. We wove with several varieties of willow that Jo grew herself in Iowa. We used the willow unpeeled, which gives a rustic look. Jo will be teaching this class next year as well, same week (first full week in Sept.). I highly recommend it. The school offered 14 classes that week in Scottish heritage arts & crafts, from Celtic art to storytelling to woodcarving. My husband learned to play the bagpipes! Keep Weaving!
