Under "WEAVERS WORDS" VOL. 4 ISS. 18 DATE JULY 02,2000, reference was made to a basket that had NR 0830 stenciled on one side. It had 2 handles, one halfway up on each narrow end... I have acquired such a basket but know nothing about it... What it was used for, how old, and what country it originates from... Any information you can provide would be appreciated... Thanks... I live in Massachusetts and have my mother's 20-year old Nantucket basket pocketbook. It means a great deal to me. The top of the purse has an ivory (?) oval with the names of my brother, sister, and me. The basket is in need of repairs. The top of the purse has just about fallen off and one of the little thingy abobs on the bottom has fallen off. I do not have a lot of money to spend on repairs nor do I know where to go to have this done. Can you be helpful in either pointing me in the right direction or at least giving me the name of a web site to find repair places in Eastern Massachusetts? Thank you for your assistance. I have just volunteered to be a regional rep for the National basketry Org. (how do I get myself into these things!) My area includes: Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and North Carolina. If you could help me out: I need contact information for any state or local guilds in those states. The NBO is in the process of creating a directory of all guilds in the country. Also, mark your calendars for the next NBO conference at Lake Tahoe in August 2005. I attended both the Arkansas and the New Mexico conferences, and it was an incredible experience. Very inspiring. Email me if you'd like details. More info on their website at: http://www.nationalbasketry.org/ I would also like to encourage you to join the NBO. They have taken on an awesome task, and need our support. I recently attended an auction and bought 2 baskets signed by Barbara Leete I "Googled" her name and came up with your Weaver's Words and a few people had mentioned Barbara's name. Can you tell me anything about her? Another basket in the lot was initialed with SLB on the bottom. Any clues? Hope to hear from you regarding the weaver of my two very nice baskets. The dates are November 5, 6, and 7 of this year, and the location is The Brethren Retreat Center in Shipshewana, Indiana. This retreat is an opportunity for basket makers to complete unfinished projects, prepare for Christmas gifts and sales, shop the Christmas sales in downtown Shipshewana, or simply to share their love of basket making with others who love the art. Shipshewana, easily accessible from Interstate 80, is a center of Amish culture in northeastern Indiana and these dates coincide with the opening of their Christmas shopping season and sales. There will be no formal basket instruction or vendors offered during this weekend, and the schedule will be loosely structured to allow participants to have the freedom to choose what their activities will be. Housing will be dormitory style and will be ladies only. Cost for the weekend, which includes 2 nights lodging and 5 Amish style meals will be $75. Registration forms and more information about Camp Weave-Away may be found at http://www.geocities.com/campweaveaway. This is your opportunity to have a relaxing yet productive weekend in a tranquil setting and make new friends with ladies who share your passion for baskets. If you have any questions please contact Joan Culler at kenjoan@bright.net or myself at ruggles@bright.net. Thank you and we hope to see you there.
