By the time this is posted we will have finished Basket Day, here in Seattle. This is an event our guild puts on for members. We had 4 classes offered, and there will be several people coming just to weave and visit. August is the month for the Basketry Schools wonderful Lake Crescent gathering. In September, we will off to the Oregon Coast for the Columbia Basin Basketweavers Guild Retreat. There are some wonderful classes being offered, but I will just be weaving, visiting old friends (this is my 12 or 13 Oregon Retreat), and walking on the beach. Some of us will also get together and head for some of the local shops. The weather is usually good, and the gathering of strawberry runners makes for some interesting weaving. This is a great excuse to come to the west coast, if you need one. October is the 10th Annual Gathering of the Northwest Native American Basket Weavers. Two great days with some of the best native weavers in the NW. In March, the NW Basketweavers Guild has their retreat on the Olympic Peninsula, and also offers some wonderful classes. There is lots to do here if you are a basket case, and enjoy working with naturally gathered materials, in addition to reed. I had better get busy, as there are five Scotties sitting here begging to be fed. Dédé Harris Seattle Where it hit 98 degrees last week, and was just too hot. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Weavers In Anchorage Sent: Monday, July 26, 2004 5:31 AM From: AnnaMarie DiBucci To: davidc@iei.net; ka9zre@yahoo.com Hello, If anyone lives in or near Anchorage, AK and weaves please e-mail me. Articles of Interest include The San Xavier Mission near Tucson, and the Papago Baskets there, Special Finds in baskets, Caning on a Gourd Purse, A Basket Story and Using Day Lily Leaves. The Free Basket Pattern is a hanging vase, and contains no weaving. I have added a new technique that I'm not sure I understand, simple and complex methods (3) for packing. For those of you following my Carefree Days, I have posted some pictures of the devastation at Kinzua State Park and what is left of the Kinzua Bridge. My "carfree" traveling has lately been in the form of local fishing. We have been fishing the tributaries of Tionesta Creek, and at one of them, the only access was to ford the creek. I will have to post a picture of my new waders; it's scary crossing a small river in them. This creek was special because I found so many fossils. Also a large metal hook, well rusted, that I think was used for rolling logs. We were able to walk back to Tionesta Creek on an old railroad track, so overgrown that a casual look would not have detected it. We know that it was a narrow gauge railroad because we found a spike. I'm sure it was built for hauling logs out. I love these Pennsylvania Mountains. It was a fun newsletter to put out (lots of pictures), but took forever. At least it seemed that way, but much of the time was taken up by additions and improvements to the web page. I still have a lot more work to do, but it will have to wait until after my largest show, Shaker Woods, in Columbiana, Ohio. It is the last 3-week ends in August and I will be attending in full costume. That will take me up til Sept. 1, when the next newsletter is due. Any bets! The buttons seem to come apart. Does anyone take the buttons apart and put screws or something else in them? Does any body have any ideas what to do about that, as I want to make casserole basket but I am afraid to use the swings with the buttons. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Claudia from Rhode Island where it is very humid. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Oak Kits Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2004 10:17:19 -0500 From: "Billy & Theresa Owens/Oak Baskets by Owens" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Hello Everyone!
