Thanks David for keeping WW alive. I just returned from a great weaving trip to Kentucky. I did try to spread the word about WW. They were all interested in learning more about you and your cause. I will be teaching a basket class here in Duncan, OK, July 31st. You will be weaving the "classic Bean Pot" A round basket featuring a wire handle. Spokes of smoked reed and a continuous weave of natural reed. This classic has been requested by several of my students. It is a fun basket for all levels and even a good repeat class. Just call 580-255-0255 or e-mail me at rscmv@texhoma.net to reserve a chair at "the table". In September I will be teaching two days of gourd/pineneedle coiling at Bloomington, Illinois. The workshop is a day and half. Friday evening and all day Saturday, sponsored by the Land of Lincoln Weavers Guild. September 10 and 11. For information e-mail Mary Ann Ford at maf823@aol.com 309-663-4926. This is a great group of gals that love to weave and have fun. I met them at the Silver Dollar City seminar, in Branson, MO where I was teaching coiling classes. Bring a friend. Send for information on registration and classes. Since I'm working lots of hours at my paying job, time is limited for me to pull this project together. The scouts need to do a square basket (scout office has a napkin basket kit) and a round basket (scout office has a round reed kit no wood bottom). When my son worked with these kits, he hated them and after getting his merit badge insisted on burning the basket (he only had to make one at that time) I've had him working with me on market baskets and he likes those, but the scout office kits were frustrating for both of us. I'm going to do a market basket for the square since a filled bottom has been easier for my son to work with, but am looking for a round basket done with round reed and a wood bottom with drilled holes for the reed to go through. I think trying to weave the bottom of a round may be more than these 12yos and I have patience together to do. Can someone tell me where to purchase the wood bottoms with drilled holes and suggest a pattern? Recommendations of kits are also welcome, but comments of your experience with those kits would also be welcome I've gotten the craft room at our church for 2 Saturdays so each basket is completed in a day and am encouraging the scouts that these can be possible birthday gifts or Christmas gifts. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaver's Word's Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2004 8:01 AM From: Kathleen Parrott To: davidc@iei.net This message is for Mitchell Webster and anyone else looking for basket supply shops in the Asheville area, Earth Guild is in downtown Asheville. They also have mail order. They also sell supplies for other crafts and have a good selection of books. I have always had good luck with the quality of materials and tools purchased there. Asheville is a great place to visit. Some of my other favorite places in Asheville are Malaprops bookstore, Laughing Seed restaurant, Southern Highland Craft Guild, Grove Park Inn, and just about any of the galleries or antique stores. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Baskets Sent: Friday, July 02, 2004 1:02 PM From: Sheri L. Van Duyn To: davidc@iei.net Hi All! Happy 4th of July! I hope by the time that you receive this posting that you have grabbed your favorite picnic basket and have headed off with the family to enjoy the food and the fireworks! I will be on our boat for 11 days as we head up north on Lake Michigan to Ludington! I have my basket kits all ready to go! There is nothing more relaxing to me than weaving on the boat and soaking your basket project overboard! Great fun in the sun-I hope to get a few things woven! It was 5 years ago at this same marina that I purchased Just Patterns! Congratulations to Donna at HomeStyle for your 25 years of business! That is simply great! I met Donna years ago at the Michigan Basketmakers Convention-where else?? I want to wish you continued success as you promote the basket business and your own handles! I will catch up with you later! Until then- Weaving Wishes! Sheri L. But my understanding is that they only hold it every other year. So the next one will be in 2006. Hopefully, someone in the Upper S.C. Basket Guild will confirm that. Basket Supply Shops Near Ashville NC: The Earth Guild is a craft store in downtown Asheville, NC that sells basket supplies as well as other craft supplies. They also hold basket classes there. I get so peeved when I see a basket in an American magazine that is not an American hand made basket. Sometimes the basket is in a decorated room; or perhaps in an ad. Are our baskets so hard to find?? Recently a nice decorating magazine had a whole article about the Basketville stores and their "Nantucket's". UGH. Some years ago I was paid by an ad person to use one of my baskets in an ad. Good money. The ad person saw the basket at a craft show and it was the correct color. I think I might call several ad places in my town and offer baskets in case they are planning an ad that will have room with a basket. Could we write to magazines and tell them that American baskets are available and should be used. I guess it's easier to go to Michaels and get one of those imported baskets?? The registration deadline for NCBA Fall Seminar West has been extended until July 15. So if you are one of those who gets distracted by summer activities instead of focusing on what's REALLY important in life, i.e., registering for every single basket making opportunity that comes along, here's your second chance. NCBA Fall Seminar West - "Made in the USA" Gateway Conference Center, Hickory, NC October 15 and 16, 2004 You must be a NCBA member to attend, but here's the deal. It's not too late to join (but after July 31, dues increase to $30.00 instead of the usual $25.00). Just download the application from the website http://www.ncbasketmakers.com/membership Then, if you've mislaid your Reeder's Report, e-mail me and I will send you a seminar registration form. Learn or refresh your skills at making a hexagon base; start on your Christmas list by making a cool rainstick for your child/grandchild; make a beautiful vessel with a pine needle handle from an ALREADY CLEANED gourd; make an unusual Christmas ornament (you'll want to make LOTS of these once you know how); or add to your Nantucket collection. These are just a few of the many possibilities available at both East and West Seminars. Still have questions? Coordinator Donnis Sills - dmsills@charter.net - would love to answer them. Hope to see you in Hickory, Mary mzkuhr@nc.rr.com P.S. East Seminar is currently taking registrations also. Registration deadline is the same as West's, July 15.
