I'll be conducting a herringbone design workshop on Saturday July 17th at my log cabin on our farm in Kentucky. The class begins at 9:00a.m & will end approximately at 4:00p.m. We'll break for lunch at 12-1. This workshop is $50.00, and will include a short identification class in wild plants. There are so many natural plants that a lot of people call weeds that are useful as food, medicine, and yes, basket weaving too. You must provide your own chair for this workshop. Please email me, if you're not sure if you have the right type of chair. Please view my website to see a previous workshop, using the same design as we will be using. My place is about midway between Cincinnati and Lexington. www.mullinslogcabin.com Are you traveling a good distance, then reserve the cabin for overnight? Or, if you really like to rough it, pitch a tent for a small fee. The crickets, frogs, and whippoorwills make this country retreat so peaceful. Most guests say it's the best night's sleep they have had in years. Deadline for registration is July 9th. I'll be looking forward to meeting lots of new basket weaving friends. She will lead one Seatweaving class, and two Antler Basket classes. Friday, August 2oth: "Coin Catcher" You can use this small Antler tray to catch coins or, if you prefer, hang it on the wall as an art sculpture. Combining classic techniques with a contemporary twist to rib basketry, students will weave a variety of materials with a predrilled antler. Ms. Peters will also discuss and demonstrate proper drilling techniques. This class is for students with prior experience in rib basketry. Sent: Thursday, June 24, 2004 8:08 AM From: "willow12960" To: I use to be a member before the switch over to here. I'm so glad to be back! Finding my love to make baskets again. Yes, I was lost. For those that either never knew me or have forgotten; I've been weaving since 1993. I use to sell at craft shows and use to do pretty good! Then the craft business took a drop and it forced me to get a regular job (darn it)! It seemed I had no time to hardly weave anymore! I use to teach basket classes also; which was very rewarding! I have two willow patches; soon to be three. I make willow, Nantucket, antler and reed baskets. I use to belong to LLBWA, and still listed with VBG and my e-mail and listing is also with Baskets, Ect. I'm coming back full circle now! Although I don't know if I will ever do craft shows again, I will be weaving, teaching this fall and setting up a shop in my parlor; again! Thanks to David for keeping this newsletter going; I feel like I have come home! As many of you know, I have been applying for just about any kind of artist grant that I can qualify for over the last 20 years and have had some minor success in doing so. I've acquired quite a few grants ranging from $2,000-$4,000 for various art groups I belonged to, also a $5,000 grant to provide park equipment and landscaping for the City of Hammond, MN when I served as City Clerk and Mayor, and in 2000 I served as grantwriter and Master on a $3,800 Minnesota Folk Art Apprenticeship Chair Seatweaving Grant. Believe me, I've applied for a ton of grants for myself too, but have only been successful so far at obtaining two. So, I'm posting this information now to serve as encouragement for any of you that are contemplating applying for your own grants. I'm fortunate to live in a state that cares a great deal for the arts and appropriates quite a bit of money for funding, many of you are not as lucky. Check with your State Arts Board or other arts organizations to see what's available in your state as well as nationwide. Early in January of this year, I submitted five grant proposals to three different granting organizations. Arrowhead Regional Arts Council in Duluth, MN for marketing support on a Career Development program grant, a Travel/Study Grant through the Jerome Foundation in MN and NY, an Artist Initiative Grant in Visual Arts category through the Minnesota State Arts Board, an Artist Fellowship program grant through the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council in Duluth, MN, and last but not least, another Career Development Grant for exhibition support through the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council in Duluth. Proposal deadlines for all of these grants were in January and results were just now sent in June, so there's a long period of time that the grantwriter is sitting on "pins and needles" until receiving the panel jury's results. What I really appreciated in all the rejection letters is that they announce how many actually applied for the grants, how many were funded and some even tell you where you ranked and what the panel said about your proposal and your work samples. This constructive criticism is of immense help to those artists that will be submitting more proposals in the future. Gives you a chance to hone your writing skills and also be succinct in your proposals and also sure of your direction. I can't stress enough how good your work samples (and slides themselves) must be. Here's the breakdown--- 1.) REJECTED--For the $5,000 Travel/Study Grant through the Jerome Foundation, based in Minnesota and New York City, my proposal was to travel to England and study with basketweaver and chair seatweaver Olivia Elton Barratt for a period of 4-5 weeks in September of this year. I submitted several slides of my wicker furniture repair and seatweaving, plus several of my contemporary deer antler basketry vessels and sculptures. The Visual Arts Panel reviewed 91 Twin Cities and 35 Greater Minnesota (mine was from outside the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul) applications. Of those 35 Greater MN reviewed only four were funded and mine was not one of them. However the panel said my grant was very well presented, bold, and appropriate, and really liked my seatweaving on the chairs and wicker repair on the wicker rockers and loved the handmade wicker baby cradles. But they didn't respond well to the antler sculptures, said they were "too sculptural, would have liked more functional baskets since I was going to England and theirs were more functional."?????? 2.) REJECTED--Artist Initiative Grant in Visual Arts category through the Minnesota State Arts Board for $6,000 for general support buying materials, setting aside time to work, travel/study/research and professional slide documentation, there were 383 eligible applications, out of which only 36 were awarded. 3.) REJECTED--Arrowhead Regional Arts Council McKnight/ARAC Individual Artist Fellowship program. My $4,000 artist fellowship proposal was "under consideration right up until the final round and place #5" from a field of 36 applicants, four fellowships ($4,000) and two emerging artist fellowships ($2,000) were awarded. 4.) REJECTED--$1,000 Arrowhead Regional Arts Council Career Development program for marketing support (professional slides to solicit galleries representation) "ranked below the grants that were awarded the limited resources available in this round." 5.) ACCEPTED--$1,000 Arrowhead Regional Arts Council Career Development program for exhibition support of my upcoming antler basketry sculpture exhibit at the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids, MN in November and for professional slide documentation of my new works. "Cathryn Peters is a fiscal year 2004 recipient of a Career Development grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council which is made possible through an appropriation from the McKnight Foundation." I am so excited and blessed to receive this financial help, since I haven't had any professional slides done within the last three years, and need to buy materials and set aside time (from teaching and wicker furniture repair), to create 10-20 new works for the exhibition. Many of my new antler basket vessels/sculptures, done in the last couple of years, have not been documented at all, with the exception of the mediocre slides I took myself or captured with my digital camera or 35MM. And you all know how important it is to have excellent quality, professional slides taken for approaching galleries, entering in competitions and submitting to magazines, books and newspaper articles. Well, I hope this has inspired you all to try your hand at submitting your own grant proposals. Check with your arts organizations, State Arts Boards, and even community education, to see if they offer classes on writing grants. If not, then search online or go to your library and research grant writing before you begin your quest. Keep in mind that the money is out there, and someone will be awarded those grants, so it might as well be you! Also that the people on the jury panels change in every go around and with every organization. Judging is very subjective and at the whim of the particular panelists that are viewing your work samples at this particular space and time of their lives. Maybe they didn't like your work this time, but might see new and different work next time and really love it, so don't get too discouraged if your grant proposals are rejected. They make really good wallpaper for outhouses or even your computer room or office!!! Good luck, hope you all are successful! This is the type of basket that would be used to display flowers, etc. especially on the ends of the pews at weddings. I've seen them in the catalog for "A Special Place", and thought I could probably make them for a family wedding if I could find a pattern. I'm not any good at designing, but I can usually follow a pattern. Does anyone know of such a pattern? Thanks, Cindy R. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% That's All For Now Folks.
