I add the other piece of Velcro to the top edge of the inside of the basket and use the lasher to held it in place. You can even cut the Velcro into a very narrow strip and lash it in place since the liner doesn't put much resistance against the Velcro. Regarding basket class times. I've both taken and taught classes at all different times of the day and different days of the week. You have to schedule the class based on your target audience or what fits the group of people likely to attend the class. Because I have kids in school, I like to take classes during the weekdays; but the classes I teach here in a university town where most people work days are always scheduled at night. These classes are usually 6:30 - 10:00 (a little short of what would be ideal, but very "do-able"). Often I'll teach an intermediate basket for these since I don't have to spend so much time on basics. I've also taught Saturday morning classes with great results - start early and get done by midday. Since I've been lurking for ages now, I appreciate the opportunity to be able to add my thoughts! Thanks to everyone for sharing their ideas and to David for doing such a great job getting it all out to us! Can you run a dehumidifier in the building where your reed is? How did you store your reed last year? Can you hang your reed from hooks on pegboard or something similar? That will allow more air to circulate than stacking it, or keeping it in boxes or bins of some kind. A fan will keep the air moving, but if there is a lot of humidity in the air, you're not really dealing with the real cause. Basket liners - I recently saw a basket that had a liner that used Velcro to hold it in place. The hook part of the Velcro was lashed right to the inside of the rim, and the loop part was sewn to the liner. When the liner needs washing, it can just be removed, washed, and easily re-attached. Day vs. night classes - it may all depend on your students. If many your students are available during the day, that would be a good time. If not, nights would be better. Same goes for how to split a class - I'm sure there are many people who are not available certain nights, but have other nights open. So classes that run on two consecutive nights may not work for people who have recurring obligations on one of those nights. You may need to poll your student base to see what would work for the majority of people. What about a weekend day? Realize that you will not be able to please everyone! As far as what to charge for split classes - the same. A 4-hour class is a 4-hour class, even if it's split into 2 time periods. Hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day weekend, and none of you were affected by the nasty weather that hit the mid-West. From really soggy SE Wisconsin (where we'll probably actually be begging for rain come August) (and where we may soon just become part of Lake Michigan!), happy June! I enjoyed them very much. At the time I had a small child at home so I did not have to be away for too long. Also, the shorter classes may be easier for someone who has worked all day. I usually hold all day classes on Saturdays since that is when most people seem to have extra time. Best wishes on starting up your classes. Day classes were easier as we could stay a little later if needed, but night classes were strictly 6pm-9pm as the center closed at 9. Those with experience had no problem finishing on their own, but the newbies were invited to the next class to finish. It seemed simple to get them finished while the others were soaking and laying out their bases. Still, it would have been better to have had 1 longer class, but military skill and development centers aren't exactly lenient. Two week classes were just that--same class on two Wednesdays in a row...I used these classes for a larger or more complicated basket. I also ventured into Saturday workshops (i.e. the intro to waxed linen) that usually lasted from 9-2. Is there a shop in your area where you could teach? For the 1-week classes, the fee was $15 per student (20% going to the center) but the weavers supplied their own reed...and $20 for a two-week class. I stopped selling at the right time; it seems...the craft/basket/etc. business has dropped off severely here in Hawaii. Our business seemed to rely on military spouses and with so many troops in Iraq and their families back on the mainland; it is hardly worth the time to do a fair. The big fair at Hickam used to have 200+ booths at their fairs--and the last fair had 40 booths...and there was not one weaver there. I hope sales are better on the mainland. Thanks, David, for keeping this list going. Lois K. I've been teaching weeknights for 4 years now. I tried to teach one basket in one class, but it's too much. I now generally teach a basket over 2 or 3 weeks, from 7 to 9 pm ideally. Bigger baskets may go to 9:30. My goal in teaching is to have fun and share how much fun and how creative weaving is. You can't have fun and be creative if you're too tired! I also don't like for students to leave with an unfinished basket. The rim of a plaited basket or the center of a rib basket is often the most challenging, so I want to be there to help them. I find it's best to allow plenty of time for the students to finish. It takes them much longer to weave than it takes me to weave the same basket. But I'm learning to overestimate the time so that everyone finishes. I used to feel guilty about charging people for the time (they have to pay in advance) if they finish before the class time ends. But most people don't feel that way -- they are thrilled to finish early. They'd much rather finish and have extra class time than not finish during class. If you know people are likely to finish early, encourage them to bring another basket to work on at the end of the next class. Just Some Thoughts...
