We are interested in collecting and processing materials, in addition to weaving (gathered materials.) Most of the guild members are rank beginners, but we have a few experienced basket makers. We are actively seeking a Grassroots grant, a part of which will fund a workshop by a visiting instructor. We need information on cost to import teacher (including travel, but lodging will be provided at local hotel) and class specifics (including costs & class size requirements) ASAP (the grant application is due next week.) If you are an instructor who is interested, please send an email with specifics to lynnhoyt@earthlink.net or zbakerz@coastalnet.com Thank you! We appreciate your interest. I have been a very bad lurking in the past years and I have come to realize that I have missed out not contributing to the forum. David you are a very good person to put up with a slacker like me. Now to volunteering! I would encourage all of you to volunteer at some organization or service group once in a while. At times it can be frustrating, but it can also be rewarding. I spent the day with 22 people at our local girls shelter. The Staff was very nice and helpful. I did two class today with the 18 girls that were housed at the shelter. I taught them a daisy chain bracelet. This may have been the first time these girls had ever had a needle in their hands. Some were better at it than others, but everyone tried to do something. I just hope that it was a break for them to do something different. That they can take a few simple things and put them together and make something that they can enjoy. Well I will get off of my soapbox. I need to do more weaving. I did finish a 3/3 twill basket for my neighbor last week. It had a 12-inch bottom of 1/2 in reed and 1/2 inch weavers. I lashed the rim with very fine cane it was finished off with shaker tape handle forming a cross on the bottom and supporting all four sides in the middle. I put runners on the bottom and stained it with my aging homemade walnut stain. She wanted to be able to store it in a cabinet, so that was why the cloth handles and wanted to be able to carry a large pie or casserole to a pot luck gathering. Well when I gave it to her it did not go into a cabinet. It is in a prominent spot in her kitchen. To this end, a shipment of reed that I had ordered sat out in the weather and has since mildewed. Is there any way to salvage said reed. I really do not want to re-order that much. The problem is my fault for not catching the package when I had returned. And some nasty weather. The powered stuff came off with soaking each pound in hot water and bleach. But I still remain with black spots all over a lot of it and would like to kill the mildew before using it for fear of letting it grow after the seat work is finished and the customer is using it. The reed is flat and varying widths between 1/4" to 1". Also, Cathryn Peters, I would like to join your directory. My information will be with you via snail mail within a week. I also kept waiting for a new address as the current one was up for sale for a year. My parents finally gave up. Oh, well. I have been so out of touch lately it is crazy. Family problems of the old boyfriend type. As well as my advertising venue of a local flea market trying to close current location and transferring to a new location with smaller spaces and fewer spaces. The fight is still up in the air, but a reprieve in the form of waiting a year has sent some vendors elsewhere and attendance low. I hope there is something to hold on to in a year. Mary E. The one I prefer is to make the lining to fit exactly inside the basket right below the rim. Glue just below the edge of the rim with Elmer's glue working on one side at a time. Let it dry completely before attempting the other three sides. The reason for the above is that one of my favorite totes needed to have the handle and rim repaired because my dog decided to snack on it. All I had to do was soak the rim, which loosened the glue. I was able to wash, iron the liner, repair the basket, glue it back in and it looked like new! Nancy in water logged Michigan %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% That's All For Now Folks.
