But I believe that if I would like to see something changed, I voice my opinion... even though sometimes I get stomped on. I have attended several different conventions in the past, and the Exhibit Room is one of my favorite places to see. This is a place where anyone can display their own original creations, and the work there is exceptional. Members of the convention get to vote on the baskets they like the best, and prizes are given. I would like to see the makers name on the baskets in the exhibit room. The people who exhibit there get no recognition unless they win. I also would like to congratulate some of them on their interesting baskets, but have no idea who they are. And sometimes I have questions about their baskets, but again, don't know who made them. I know that years back, names were on the baskets, but it was decided that judging would be less partial if there were no names on the baskets. Personally, I think most people voting would still vote for the basket, not the basket maker. This is no place for a popularity contest. I am asking that this question be reviewed by the board again. Perhaps the voting could be limited to Sat. noon, and names displayed there-after. However, I would like to see names displayed for the whole time the exhibit room is open. I am wondering if others feel the same way, and the Weaver's Words forum is a perfect place for feedback. It also wouldn't hurt to send a message to your convention's chairman or exhibit room person. I want to thank Mary Zeh Kuhr for posting the winners of the N.C. Exhibit room. I can't get the page to come up yet, but am dying to know who won. I also want to thank those who bought patterns for me in the pattern room at N.C.. My sales there were near record breaking, being exceeded only by a Missouri convention about 8 years ago in Kansas City. Aren't conventions great? They can be an experience of a lifetime. There is no where else you can find so many baskets and basket "things" to buy. There is great beauty and great originality there. Everyone should attend at least one in their lifetime. It was just great! I think attendance was over 700. Everyone involved in making it happen should be commended. The hotel did a great job, good hot food and easy to get around in. Lots of nice folks. If you haven't been to NCBA, you should think about coming next year and joining the fun. A note to Nanette Anderson about the slot cutter - most bases are made on a wood lathe. Most of the people that I know that do these bases use a hacksaw - just put the blade down against the turned base while the base is still on the lathe. It is a thin slot and works perfectly. Very little costs in blades as well. Takes about 30 seconds to put in a slot this way. Also wanted to let everyone know that we have updated my website for waxed linen and coiled baskets. There are about 50 different baskets and their kits available. There is a slide show so that you can see the baskets from all angles. Address is: www.judykwilson.com. Come take a look. We would love to have you visit us and see all the baskets. Judy K. Wilson 9776 E. Thanks, Nuke %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Expert Needed Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 22:37:03 EST From: TORIBETH22@aol.com To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com I need to first explain that I am not a basket weaver but I am searching for a kind and generous basket weaving expert to help me resolve questions about different types of weaving. What I propose is that I will send photos of different weaves and the expert will be able to tell me the name of the weave as well as how the weave is used to make a basket. This is purely a research project that I am engaged in. My earlier questions about dying baskets was met with dozens of helpful emails. I live in Northern California, so if my "volunteer expert" lives nearby, I could communicate personally. If not, we will have to use the Internet. Thank You, Toribeth %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Liquidating Materials Sent: Sunday, March 28, 2004 10:21 PM From: Mary Hooper To: davidc@iei.net Due to health problems I am giving up basket making with reed and am selling off my supplies and materials at bargain prices. Van Duyn To: davidc@iei.net Subject: Baskets From: Sheri L. Van Duyn sheri@justpatterns.com www.justpatterns.com Hi Basket Friends, I am so glad to be getting this newsletter each week. Thank you David for these postings and all the information that we receive. To Arlene, If you are looking for Jackie Carlson, please visit her Website at www.summermeadow.com. Besides being a good friend, Jackie also advertises in my Magazine-Just Patterns. I featured one of her Twill Patterns in the Fall 2003 Issue of the Magazine, which she called-Birch, and Feathers. This is a neat twill woven wall basket using birch bark for weavers. Jackie taught this basket in March to 2 of the Grand Rapids Guilds that I belong to. I had brought this basket for Show and Tell and of course the gals all voted to weave this one! Jackie is quite modest about her designs, so whenever I can tell others about her patterns-I do! Please check out the Spring 2004 Issue of Just Patterns by going to my Site www.justpatterns.com Go to the Magazine page and click on the Current Issue to see the patterns featured there. There are 6 great patterns in this Issue. If you would like to Subscribe, please go to the order form and print out and I will get an Issue out to you! I would love to add you to my list! My Free Sample page is being reworked at this time, but to find over 20 free patterns on my Site-go to the Weaver's Page and click each pattern listed here. Please feel free to print these out for your own personal use. It is always nice to get Free Patterns! I am heading to Florida for Spring break the first full week of April, so by the time this newsletter makes its way to you, I hope that I am sitting by the pool and weaving! I have all my kits and supplies ready to go! My parents have a condo in Boca Raton on the ocean side; so I am anxious to see them and enjoy a relaxing pace for a week! Then 8 more weeks of school! I have had such a busy year moving my Art room to a new facility. I moved over 150 boxes of Art supplies; so I was very busy last summer moving and then getting settled in my new room which I just love! I am looking forward to do some more weaving this summer! Nice chatting again! I will catch up with you all later! Until then- Weaving Wishes! Sheri L. I just wanted to email the list to say that I'm giving you all a chance to buy the website first. I no longer have any time to put into the site due to my other jobs. If interested the site is easy to maintain, gets plenty of traffic and I can continue to do the "technical" parts for the site as well. You would just need Front Page 2002 to do changes and updates to the site. If no acceptable offer is taken, it will be up on Ebay starting this weekend. Thanks much for 4 years of basket education; I'm ready for the real world! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Textile Basket Date: Thu, 1 Apr 2004 23:02:41 -0500 From: "Jennifer Niskanen" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com I am looking for a book that has good instructions on making fiber/textile baskets. I got "A modern approach to basketry with fibers and grasses," by Dona Meilach from my local library but I am wondering if there is something with clearer instructions. I already have a good skill base in macramé and Chinese knotting and I want to expend my skills into 3 dimensional forms. Could you recommend something? Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2004 20:10:52 -0700 From: "Faye Stukey" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com Wow! Baskets are coming and going from one end of this country to the other this week! If you haven't already, please let me know when you shipped your basket to your partner... and if you've received your basket, please let me know that, too! I'm trying to keep track so nobody gets left behind... but I need your help! I also have three pictures so far and am creating a Photo Album at Webshots. The URL is: http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=viewall&albumID=130704536. Hopefully you were able to take a picture before you sent your basket to your partner... if not, hopefully your partner can send me one when she receives it, as I think it would be great fun for everybody to see everybody else's baskets! Don't forget, the deadline to mail your baskets was Friday, April 2. If you were unable to meet the deadline for some reason, please contact your swap partner and send me a copy of your email... just so I'm in the loop! If you haven't heard from your partner, and haven't received a basket by next weekend (remember, our goal was to get everybody's baskets to them by Easter), please contact me so I can follow up! Until Next Week! Faye Stukey Kalispell, Montana %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Repair Inquiry Sent: Saturday, April 03, 2004 8:55 AM From: The Country Seat, Inc. Mary created a beautiful antler basket. The God's Eyes are dark green and tan reed, and the rest of the basket is woven in seagrass. It's absolutely gorgeous!! Mary filled this wonderful basket with a CD and two tapes of folk/celtic music that we share an interest in, a package of specialty lemonade mix, a fudge mix, and a small hanging basket. I am overwhelmed! I've sent Mary "Thank You's" separately, but want to say it again here. Many thanks, also, to David for hosting this forum, and to Faye Stukey for coordinating the swap. As someone still relatively new to basketry, I encourage everyone to consider participating in the basket swaps. I've learned so much from my swap partners, and the descriptions posted of all the baskets. The swaps are a wonderful way to "weave" our lives and interests together with those of someone else, who becomes a special kind of friend, even though we haven't met.
