It's not at all like the antique hand splitters and is much easier to use. Clamped to a table it's a neat quick job to make several sizes of splints in no time. Made all of steel, I think, it has blades and a crank handle that you use to run the material over the blades. It's spendy at $175, but worth every penny and is really good for black ash and birch bark, especially. I also bought a few other blades, so that added somewhat to the cost. Check out John's his newly revamped website at http://www.johnmcguire.net to see if he still carries them. In St. Louis we have a great basketry shop called St. Louis Basket Supply. It's at 11420 Gravois Rd. Phone # 314-843-5005. There's a guild that meets there! I use Rit dye, and only the hottest water from my hot water heater. I do boil some water to dissolve the dye and then pour that (about 2 cups) into the tub. I get great results. Real bright colors and very little bleed. I've never "cooked" the reed in a dye pot. I don't know of any studios there or in the Jacksonville area, however, I have a shop 90 minutes south on US1 in Melbourne called Basket Emporium. Feel free to contact me if you would like a schedule of classes. And David, in response to your request for donations, how about setting up a PayPal account so we can transfer over the net? Sure would be nice... and easy! Thanks, Mona Webb Basket Emporium 406 N. I just returned from a weekend at the Midwest Basketry Focus, in West Harrison, IN. I so thoroughly enjoyed myself that I thought other weaver's might want to know. The atmosphere was relaxing, friendly, and supportive -- we laughed and shared and wove. Many thanks to Judy Dominic for her organization and hosting of this event. I made a honeysuckle and white oak basket with Scott Gilbert. I really liked the opportunity to take an in-depth class that focuses on materials preparation and techniques, as well as design, and not just following a pattern. Scott's stories added an extra dimension to the class! This was definitely one of the best basket conference's I have attended, and I would highly recommend it! I am already planning to attend next year. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Wood Bases Sent: Tuesday, March 16, 2004 2:16 PM From: EHBrandt101@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hello Weavers, Thanks to all who sent me ideas about staining wood bases. I am trying but not good at it yet. I applied a gel with a brush and got the gel on too thick. I will try a foam brush or soft rag next. My next question is about Instacure. I will try keeping it in the refrigerator. Any other ideas about how to keep it useable? It is not inexpensive for such a small bottle and the last half of mine was not useable. Maybe the fridge will help. Thanks for all the emails to me but lets share the ideas on this site also. A friends Mom just recently passed away and we have 3 baskets that are sold new today for around $7000. Is there a place to sell these? They were made by Stephen Zeh and are dated and signed 1987. Thanks, Dan %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Looking For A Basketmaker... Some days they win, some days not! A friend of mine has moved from Dayton to the state of Washington. And she's looking for some fellow weavers in that neck of the woods.
