Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 13:32:27 -0500 From: "Baskets Of Joy" To: "Baskets Of Joy" Spring is upon us and so are some wonderful new basket patterns from Baskets Of Joy! Newly Revised COUNTRY AT HEART We love this simplified version of one of our most popular baskets! This is a great basket to learn to use the wood base with a groove. We re-wrote it to be a quick and fun weave for EVERY level of basket maker! Base and handle are available: BASE-6R (plain 6" round base with groove), $5.00 ea. BASE-6RSR (stenciled with our NEW Rooster design), $9.00 ea. KK-28S (plain double wire spool handle), $2.50 ea. KK-28SF (with coordinating fabric), $3.50 ea. NEW PATTERNS!! SPRING WHIMSY Curvy, airy, with a floral flair--the vine and leaf-wrapped iron handle complement this basket perfectly! New Hampshire Basketmaker Nancy Lascelle designed the original version, and Maurine has updated it with our custom-made handle and color accents. Basket is about 10" tall, plus handle height. Intermediate level. Base and handle are available: BASE-5x8 (oval), $5.50 ea. IRON-PIELH (Hand-wrought iron pie handle with vine and leaf wrap and curved extensions), $25.00 ea. COUNTRY DOOR POUCH Our favorite home-decorating catalogs often inspire us with wonderful ideas like this one. We stained ours with a dark walnut stain for a rustic, old New England look, and hung it on the front door filled with bittersweet branches for a pretty Autumn accent. At Fourth of July, it looks great filled with a "bouquet" of flags! This basket is 9" wide and almost 16" tall! Beginner level. Handle available: SBH-5 (5" spread bushel handle), $4.00 ea. Painted sunflower tie-on is also available, WD-SUN, $4.00 ea WEEKENDER'S TOTE 5"x10" wood base, 81/2"x11" at top, 81/2" tall This sturdy wood-based basket features a pretty weaving pattern with handcrafted leather handles. You'll definitely make more than one of these great totes! Intermediate level. Base and leather handles available: BASE-5X10R, $7.50 ea. It is always nice to see flowers in bloom when we are there. That lets us know in the Northern States that spring is on its way. Summer will be here before we know it and there is still time to sign up for THE NASHVILLE RETREAT. I will be teaching the 36 rib basket. There is over 36 hours of instruction. Making the rib basket from the beginning. Plus lots of fun. For more information email me or if you are going to NCBA I will have information there. Just contact me or pick it up at Market Place. Yvonne had ask about shaping ribs. I talk to her personally but thought if there was any one else interested I will send the insert from my pattern about shaping ribs for the buttocks basket FIRST SET OF RIBS: Shaping. The first set of ribs has three ribs on each side. These ribs are trimmed on the inside of the curve only. Starting about two inches from the end. Use your shaver and shave toward the tip cutting a little more off each stroke till you have a taper going down to a paper-thin tip. This will be flat on the tip. Troubleshoot: If your tip is too thin or too far out, your rib will buckle under your weaving. If it is too thick your Godseye will bulge out or you will have trouble keeping your ribs in back of the Godseye SECOND SET OF RIBS: There are five ribs in the second set. There will be a match for the three in the first set and one at the top rim and one at the bottom of the handle. Troubleshoot: Adjusting your ribs in the second set is very important. If you do not get your ribs lifted and the arch round, it is difficult to correct this after the third set is added. SHAPING: The rest of the ribs will be tapered to a point. The length you shape your rib will depend on the placement of the rib. In the second set, the point of the rib will go up next to the Godseye and the shaping will start where the first set of weaving stops. Start shaping on the inside of the curve just as you did in the first set the distance from the Godseye to the last row of weaving in the first set. Taper your cuts to the end of the rib then turn the rib and taper on the side. Never trim a rib on the outside of the curve. You want the point of the rib small enough to slide up to the Godseye but sturdy enough to support the rib. Hope this is helpful to anyone interested in doing ribs. Karen's Baskets Karen Zane 521 N. We are thinking of becoming snowbirds and going to St. Augustine, Florida in the winter. Does anyone know if there are any basket related businesses? Thought I had found one because we were driving and I saw a business call the basket case. Made honey make a U turn and find it again. After all that it wound up being a little shop catering picnic lunches. I wonder is this a sign that I have become a basket case? Ha Ha Ha. Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2004 17:56:34 -0700 From: "Faye Stukey" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com Okay... it sounds like there's plenty of interest in a basket swap so I've decided to set the date! Let's plan a Spring Basket Swap with a closing date of April 2, 2004... which will get everybody a brand new basket in time for Easter! There were several people who expressed an interest in a blind swap, but the majority preferred swapping with a partner... so that's they way we'll go! If you're interested in signing up for the Spring 2004 Basket Swap, please send me your name, complete mailing address, telephone number, email address, and any information you'd care to share with a swap partner! Sign-ups will end March 15... that will give us two issues of Weaver's Words so nobody misses out... you can then expect your swap partner information by Wednesday, March 17. Start planning what you'd like to weave now! You'll then have a good two weeks to weave for your partner before the mailing deadline of April 2, 2004. I look forward to hearing from all of you!
