I, for one, am anxiously awaiting the next one! I would be happy to host it... If you're interested, drop me a line at stukey@aboutmontana.net and let me know. I would appreciate knowing, too, if you'd prefer a blind swap or swapping with a partner. Does that make sense? Once upon a time we did blind swaps... Where you'd send to one person and a different person would send to you... Versus two swappers sending to each other. Let me know your preference! Thanks! Unfortunately this opportunity may be too far for Barbara to make it, but others of you might want to know that JoAnn Kelly Catsos will be presenting a lecture about her experiences persuing the HGA level I certificate of excellence in basketry at the 2004 Annual Meeting of Northeast Basketmakers Guild. JoAnn is one of two basketmakers who has received the level I: Technical Skills in Basketmaking certificate of excellence in basketry to date, the only other person to do so is Alice Tulloch. No one has yet achieved the Level II: Master in Basketmaking with Specialized Study. The Annual Meeting of NBG will be held April 18, 2004, 2PM at New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester, NH. The meeting is capping off the run of Northeast Basketmakers Guild's juried international basketry exhibit, workshop and lecture series that runs from March 10 - April 18th. In addition to JoAnn's lecture there will be a Shaker Knife Basket workshop taught by JoAnn along with additional workshops. Nancy Moore Bess is scheduled to teach a one-day workshop, Japanese Traditional Packaging as Vessel. Liana Haubrich will teach Folded Birch Bark Gift Box with Continuous Cover and Spruce Root Stitching, also a one-day class. Dr. Margaret Mathewson will teach a three-day Spruce Root Medallion class. Margaret will also present a keynote address entitled West Coast Basketry: Native Materials and Preparation on Saturday evening. In addition, there will be gallery walks led by the jurors Liana Haubrich and Nancy Moore Bess. I'm sure lots of people will contribute and will have contradictory ideas. Do what makes sense to you! I try to give my reasons for everything... Best to work outdoors - both for the fumes and for the mess. Wear old clothes & shoes & rubber gloves. Use a non-reactive container such as a plastic bucket or an enamel pan or stainless steel pot or glass pot. Large oval canning pots are the best for dyeing large amounts of reed. Do not use aluminum or copper, which can react with the salt in Rit dye. Ditto for tools. Wood & plastic tools will stain but that's what I use. Do not ever use anything you've dyed with for food or drink. Rinse the reed before dyeing. Sometimes reed has a film on it - definitely worth rinsing so you don't get the film in the dye water. Also, the Rit instructions (for dyeing fabric) say to wet the fabric to take the dye more evenly. (Actually, I've tried both dry & wet and it doesn't seem to make much difference - except for that occasional film.) Divide the reed into bundles that will easily fit in your container(s). You need room for the reed to move or the dye won't take evenly. You can tie the bundles but remove the tie when you dye (unless you want a natural stripe where the tie is!). Some people cut the reed for a particular basket and then dye the cut reed. I only tried that once. The good news is that cutting first ensures you have exactly enough dyed reed for the project. The bad news is that the ends of the reed absorb a LOT of dye. It makes a big difference in how much reed you can dye with one box. Also, if you need more reed later, it's very hard to match the color exactly with a new box of dye. No need to add salt or ammonia or anything to Rit dye. Rit already has salt (I believe that helps the dye to bond with the fiber and last longer). I heard ammonia would help keep the dye from running when you weave, and tried it a few times. It didn't help at all and I didn't like the smell of ammonia on my hands when I wove. Also, a teacher told me that chemically speaking; the ammonia makes no sense (I don't remember the details - it's been a LOONG time since high school chemistry class!). Anyway, trial and error showed me that ammonia didn't help any. Test the dye batch with a small piece of reed before dunking in a bunch of reed. I've had very consistent results with navy blue and scarlet. Hunter green has been the most varied - sometimes it's been a silvery mossy color, other times more of a blue-green, other times a true hunter green. If you don't like the color, mix in a bit of dye from other boxes. Specific Techniques: 1. The burner method is good for dyeing large amounts of one color. Heat water in a large non-reactive pot on a hot-plate or stove top. When it boils, add Rit dye. I always use one package for about 4 gallons of water. Stir the dye well til it dissolves completely. Then I lower the temp because I think it's hard on the reed to boil it - I think it raises hairs on the reed. Add wet reed. Move the reed around - stir the water often to get an even dye. 2. The bucket method is great for dyeing small amounts of many colors - and for space-dyeing! Boil water. Pour a half-gallon or more into a plastic bucket. Add Rit dye (half a package or more) and stir well til it dissolves completely. Add reed. I've used all kinds of plastic buckets and neither the boiling water nor the dye seems to hurt them. General rule: higher temp and/or longer time => more intense color. Let the reed stay in the water until it's a bit darker than you want - it will lighten when you rinse. Each batch will be lighter. For very dark navy or black, you may need 2 boxes of dye to get a deep enough color. Rinse the reed with cool water and let it dry well. I just rinse a bit - not excessively. I don't soak the reed in clear water - just spray it. The reed needs to dry quickly or (here in the hot, humid South) it will get mildew. Spread it out to dry on a clothes line (ideally) or a table out of the sun. (The sun will fade the color, although a couple of hours won't make much difference.) Or you can weave with it right away! While you're dyeing, you might toss in some varied materials to make your baskets more interesting. Sea grass, sisal/jute from the hardware store, yarn, etc. Also, if you have any baskets in which the dyed reed bled a lot or you used a color you didn't like (in a class, maybe?) - dye the whole basket! Also, I've heard you can use Kool-aid to dye pastel colors. Keep weavin' & havin' fun! To Jodi about Rite Dye: I have been dying with Rite for about 19 years and love the results. I use the boxes of powder - 1 box per 1 gallon of water. That can be adjusted depending on the color - dark colors it's great, but if you are dying a lighter color such as mauve or yellow, you can want to decrease the amount of water to 3/4 of a gallon. I boil the water then add the dye and keep the solution boiling as I dye. If you want to increase or decrease the amount of solution depending on the dying job, simply add or subtract from this general formula. The rinsing process you will get 50 different opinions on, but my first rinse is cold water with Retayne to cut down on the bleeding. I have only recently began using the Retayne and am so used to using large quantities of vinegar that I still put in several cups of vinegar to a gallon of water with the Retayne. The second rinse is cold clear water. Some people let their reed dry in between steps, but I have no time for that and immediately go from dying to first rinse to second rinse then dry. Good luck! I also want to announce that my web site has its first update for 2004 with 4 new patterns and kits. The Featured sale basket this month is my new Mini Whitewashed Easter basket. The pattern explains how to whitewash and the kit even includes a bottle of white acrylic paint and sponge brush. The other 3 new patterns were designed using 3 more of Arnies Arts & Craft's beautifully designed hand painted slotted bases. They can be found of Page 7 of my Kits & Patterns section. We will be vending in the ballroom at the NC Convention in March. I will be introducing the kits and patterns of two more new designs in NC that I will be teaching in IN. "From the Heart" is a Williamsburg design using Grandma's Basket's heart shaped Williamsburg handle (Thanks Tom) and the other "Zigzag Seagrass" is interwoven with natural and dyed seagrass simultaneously. I do look forward to the suggestions and information on basket activities. I'm usually a "lurker" but have a couple questions some of you may be able to help with. First I usually stand while setting a basket base on my kitchen table, but have been having problems with my back after leaning forward working on basket base. Is there a suggested height of work surface or stool (I find chair is too low in comparison to table for comfort). Second, I have a metal basket tree with arms and base, which detach and would like to find another but have been unable to locate one if anyone could direct me to a source. Thanks, Darlene in the Thumb of Michigan where the snow is melting slowly. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaver's Words Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2004 8:54 AM From: "Arlene J. Zaloznik" To: To Jodi about Rit dye: I dye small batches all the time - it's basically trial and error depending on how deep a color you need. I use boiling water with a little salt added - for smaller batches, I mix a couple of quarts of water with the dye - this way you can store the left over dye in a milk carton or other similar container to reuse at a later date. The more you use the dye, the weaker it becomes. For full coils of reed, I usually use a gallon of water per packet of Rit - if I will be dying several coils, I may add 2 packets of dye - and just watch the color saturation. I am sure others will have different suggestions. I was pleased with an article that appeared about me in the March issue of Craft's Report. The interviewer did a great job gathering together the bits of information - it certainly is humbling to read about how one's life has taken twists and turns. After viewing this show, you'll have an idea of what the wild herbal walk will be like on May 1st. I would love to meet a lot of you basket weavers, who are in driving distance from me. I'm about midway between Cincinnati and Lexington. I would like to thank everyone who responded for my request on leather suppliers. You are a great group of people. Until next time, this is Judy Mullins from Kentucky; where there seems to be a glimmer of hope that Spring is arriving.
