I want to put it in hot sudsy water but am afraid the color/stain will come off and also that the basket may lose its shape. Any suggestions? Any experience you might be willing to share? You've made Sunday evenings much more enjoyable for all of us. It's nice to see so much participation again. I'm looking for a supplier of basket making materials in the Dallas or Plano, Texas area for a relative who is a new weaver there. I have David's Basket Travel Companion, which I've used many times on our trips, but there are very few listings for Texas as a whole. If anyone knows of any supply shops in that area, please let me know. She has a supply of mail order catalogues as a source but it's always nice to have a local shop for classes, good basket chats and materials, of course. Thanks for all your help. Date: Sun, 8 Feb 2004 18:53:21 -0800 (PST) From: "Carla" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com What is the shelf life of reed? I have kept my reed in a plastic covered container, is that a good idea? Carla Scheidecker %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Thank You Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 06:10:14 -0600 From: "Alene Miller" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com David, I would like to thank you for sending out WW on Sunday. Now we all can have something to look forward to. Thank you for your dedication to this group of weavers. I don't contribute much, but I do enjoy receiving this posting. When I started I was a fairly new weaver. I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THIS FORUM. Or it has sparked a thought and I have run with it. So times it did not turn out, but so what, you don't know unless you try. I have been working on teaching a bead weaving class to my local guild here in February. We meet in Springfield, Missouri. The class will be on Peyote stitch. We will be doing a small needle case. I have done Native American Bead work for many years. (I didn't consider it weaving.) I have shown people how to do this, but trying to write instructions is a challenge. This to will pass. ;-) Well I better get going. Take Care, Alene Miller SW Missouri were it started snowing this morning. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: BBA Convention Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 07:24:53 EST From: KindredKountry@aol.com To: Ka9zre@yahoo.com I just wanted to say "Thank-You", to all the people who put together a wonderful convention. It was my first one and I really enjoyed myself. It was good to see people that I had met at other workshops again. The best was learning new & helpful things. Thanks, Rami %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Nantucket Base Router Sent: Sunday, February 08, 2004 10:05 PM From: "Ediebob" To: Hi David, I am looking for a source for a router to make slots in Nantucket bases, and other bases where you insert reed for the stakes. I checked out a source in Massachusetts, but they no longer have any. Any suggestions or helpful direction? Bob Lewis, Sarasota %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Brittle Reed Question Sent: Monday, February 09, 2004 3:19 PM From: Mary Hooper To: davidc@iei.net Thanks to Cathy in Germany for bringing up the question of brittle reed. I don't do baskets now except a few for a shop. They are small, so take up little workspace, can be completed and cleaned up in an evening, and use up scraps that would otherwise end up in the fireplace. I do have coils of reed that I have not yet figured out how to dispose of (short of giving them away!) And I wonder, too, how long they last before becoming too brittle to work with. I bought brittle reed when i started out and would like not to do that to another basket maker. I'd be glad of a thread on this topic... Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 17:31:54 EST From: Yvohas1@aol.com To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com One of my friends asked me to make her an Appalachian style basket. I told her I would. What's that saying about "open mouth... insert foot? LOL I'm not a novice to basket making but this project has me stymied despite the clear instructions in Daughertys Splint Woven Basketry book. The problem is hard to explain. I am attempting a Flat-Bottomed Egg basket. I do OK until I get to the part about adding the secondary ribs and the subsequent weaving. I add the secondary ribs... pushing them into the weaving as far as they will go... usually about 3 rows... so the pointed tips of the ribs don't show. I've get as far as 9 rows of weaving but don't like the way the added ribs look! They aren't nice and even. The primary ribs seem to be "low" and the secondary ones look "high" even though they were equal before I started to weave them in. They aren't smooth and even. Does my explanation make any sense? I have tried re-starting (over and over) but the same thing happens each time. Am I pulling the weaving too tight? Should I be controlling the ribs (keeping them the same height) with my left hand as I am weaving with my right hand? Can someone guide me as to what I am doing wrong or is this something that will even out as I continue on? Somehow I don't think THAT'S going to happen. :0) I really want to make this basket for my friend but I don't want to and won't give her an inferior quality gift. Thank you (in advance) for any suggestions you might have. The ice and sleet driving down wasn't much fun but the rest of the trip was great. The GBA put on a nice convention and everything was convenient. Enjoyed a bit of warmth and sunshine on Sunday. Good job girls. NASHVILLE RETREAT. Is July 19-23. We will be making a seven inch 36 rib buttocks basket. This is a great way to have a basket weaving getaway vacation. Nashville, Indiana is a quaint little town nestled in the hills of Brown County. The Artist Colony Inn is in the center of town. Most of the rooms have a balcony that you can sit on and people watch while you have a cool drink. The hot tub is on the roof and we plan to have a hot tub party under the stars. One evening we will attend the Brown County Playhouse for the local production. Nashville has 300 shops and artist studios that you can browse though on our two hour lunch breaks. This will be a laid back relaxing week of weaving. There will be at least 32 hours of weaving time. Class limit is eight students. If you want more information please contact me and I will be glad to help you. Happy Weaving, Karen Zane Karen's Baskets Karen Zane 521 N. Buckingham Ct. My name is Janet and I am looking for classes in basket making in Illinois around Quincy or Springfield, IL. or a group that gets together. I have been looking for so long. I also do pine needle baskets. Does anyone make these type of baskets? I am 54 years old and I live alone now and am so lonesome to be with people that share the same interest as basket making. I love my grandchildren very much and love gardening but quite honestly I am tired of talking about these subjects! I want basket talk!! These women look at me like I am nuts! They tell me to just go buy one! They just don't understand. Help! I am dying out here in cow country!
