I am not sure if what you saw was an old or new painted basket, but I have painted ash baskets with milk paint found in many different colors. Once applied, it can be rubbed, lightly sanded for a shiny finish as well as an antiqued look. It does not work the same on reed as sanding will make it hairy but you could apply a coat of clear weavers stain as well. Hope this gives you some suggestions. Karen@berkshiretradingantiques.com I am planning to run some basket classes in my studio this spring/summer in Ashfield, Mass. It is 1/2 hour from Northampton in the hill towns. If anyone is interested in knowing more, please feel free to email me for a schedule. Thanks David for all your hard work. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: [weaverswords] "Weavers Words" V. 7 I. 16 Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2004 09:24:16 EST From: BsktByBarb@aol.com To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com David - the Sunday posting is Great. Now we know when to look for it. Sounds like everyone likes the idea. JoAnne Howard - Have a great time at Fort Belvoir. My father spent his last four years of Service at Fort Belvoir. I was in the 5th grade when we moved there. I took some of the classes offered to kids during the summer. I made a ceramic trivet and also a mail basket (little round piece of wood. Lots of holes, big mess... Obviously, Flo Hoppe was not teaching out class). I grew up and ended up with a Ceramic shop for 10 years. My mother was such a fan. She kept the trivet and would tell everyone that I had a ceramic shop and that had made the trivet. Funny, I never did put her in charge of my advertising. Do they still shoot the cannon off at 0600 every morning? We lived behind Post HQ and the cannon was across the street. It pretty much helped you out of bed in the morning. Good luck with the class. Your list is a wonderful resource. Basketmakers located in the geographic Great Basin area of the United States are hosting a basketry convention this summer. This will provide weavers on the West coast a wonderful opportunity to experience the fantastic July weather in high desert Reno - - sunny days and cool nights. Family vacations might be planned around this event as scenic Lake Tahoe, historic communities - ghost and otherwise and spiritual Pyramid Lake are additional attractions. Backdrop for the convention, taking place in the downtown Pioneer Center and Sierra Arts Center, is ArtownT, Reno's award-winning month-long celebration of the arts. Most ArtownTactivities are free and just a few steps from convention headquarters. You're invited to take part in the Great Basin Basketmakers' convention, an exciting three-day event in Reno, Nevada, July 15-18. Registration deadline is March 30 for "Great Basin Basketmakers Weave-In: A Fresh Approach", offering creative workshops, special events, exhibits, and basket tours that will take your breath away. For more information, or to receive a brochure, access our web site www.greatbasinbasketmakers.org, or contact Eileen Brilliant, 530-544-5145, or Tia Flores, Convention Registrar, P.O. Box 8808; Reno, NV 89507. Beginners, experts, and wildly innovative basket artists will converge downtown Friday and Saturday to study with 18 well-known teachers from around the west. On Sunday, which is Great Basin Day, participants will discover the materials, techniques, and lore of the Great Basin. Other convention activities include demos, gallery exhibits, mini projects, talks, vendor sales, slide shows, instructor's marketplace, and optional basket bus tours to the Pyramid Lake reservation and Lake Tahoe. An additional bonus: "Weaving Naturally in the Great Basin", a book about weaving with Great Basin plant materials, will be available to the public for the first time. Evenings are full, too, with an opening mixer at the dramatic new Nevada Museum of Art, featuring an exhibition and slide presentation of innovative contemporary basketry. Saturday evening you'll be treated to a fabulous western heritage evening at the Bull Ranch, one of the oldest working ranches in the west. Sincerely, Sallie Moore Great Basin Basketmakers %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: WW & Plymouth Reed & Cane Sent: Tuesday, February 03, 2004 8:37 AM From: SharonKlusmann@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi David And Fellow Basketweavers: Thank you so much for making this newsletter weekly - what a great idea! You are a real blessing!! I was so pleased to read what Karen Mitchell wrote about everyone contributing to David for his work. I have been receiving WW for quite a few years and really enjoy it. I will be putting a check in the mail today! Also, I wanted to write a very similar comment about advertising on WW as Karen did, but felt I couldn't because I do use WW as a forum to let people know when my web site has been updated. It isn't the only time I write in, but the previous comments made me feel like I might never advertising my updates again because they were an annoyance. I am glad to know that other people are interested in what is new and available all around the country and on the web. To Judy S. about Plymouth Reed & Cane: Owner Lorraine Justice is still alive and kicking. She has moved her shop into a warehouse and her home and been having some heath problems. Sometimes it is a challenge to get a hold of her because of her "wacky" phone situation, but the numbers to reach her are the same. If you get that recording that the messages are full, try again later in the day. 1-888-208-8017 OR 734-455-2150 I am still receiving supplies from her on a regular basis. There are no basketry supplies in any stores here, either! Bummer, I have to mail order all my supplies. There is a nice little shop in Dunnellon, Nooks & Crannys that has some out of the ordinary beading supplies. Old downtown Dunnellon is a pretty neat place to wander through, and its only about 30 minutes drive from Ocala. There is also a neat beading shop in downtown Eustis that has lots of interesting stuff - don't know the name of it, but its right on Magnolia in the old downtown. I think there is also one in Leesburg, but I can't place it right now it's probably downtown where all the neat shops are! Jean's Crafts in Belleview has a pretty standard assortment of beading supplies. Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon does a basket class every month on the first Saturday. Pookie Bear's Den in Leesburg does a basket class every month on the second Saturday. Jean's Crafts also has a basket class one Friday a month during the winter. When will you be here? February 28-29 Rainbow Springs has an event called "Cracker Days" in which they have a lot of old-timey artisans demonstrating their work. And, the Florida Gourd Society has its annual convention February 27-29 in Belleview. You're always welcome to come visit me, too! I live out in the country, on the edge of the national forest. Hopefully the weather will corporate. Just a reminder that NASHVILLE RETREAT is July 19-23. Don't let time get away from you and not register before the class is full. There are only eight slots for students so that everyone will have an opportunity to learn the details of this basket. We will be making the 36-rib buttocks basket. With at least 36 hours of instruction and shopping, and playtime it is a fun filled week. Nashville, Indiana and The Artist Colony Inn are both a relaxing way to take a class and enjoy a basket vacation. Karen's Baskets Karen Zane 521 N. Buckingham Ct. Date: Sun, 8 Feb 2004 03:40:51 -0600 From: "Cathryn Peters" To: davidc@iei.net, ka9zre@yahoo.com Since I began my domain website in 1999, it's always been strictly an informational resource site, with no e-commerce. But can no longer afford to provide all this information and advertising for others for free! I've just done a major overhaul on my domain website WickerWoman.com with more in the works. I have also decided to continue publishing my free monthly ezine, Wicker Woman's Weavings. I considered quitting in December with all the new S*PAM laws taking affect, but decided to keep on pluggin' on instead. Like this email digest of David's, it's hosted by Yahoo! Groups and can be viewed online from the website link below in my signature file. One of the new changes on the domain site is REPAIR DIRECTORY page, so I can refer customers to seatweavers, wicker repair experts and furniture refinishers across the country. If you have a business and would like to purchase some low-cost advertising just send an email to RepairDirectory@WickerWoman.com to get all the details by autoresponder! The many, many Resource Links that I have provided on my website since 1999, will be changing soon, too. No longer can I afford to provide free advertising and referrals for the suppliers, basketry artist, and publications. The Basket Guilds, Basketry Information, Basket Classes and Workshops, and General Craft Business links will remain free, but I will gradually drop the sites that don't already have a reciprocal relationship with me, or that decide not to pay the low-cost advertising fee. Check http://www.WickerWoman.com/links.html to see if your business is listed on my site and email me if you want to remain there. Sorry, but this "labor of love" of mine has to start generating some income so that I can continue to provide all my viewers with quality content!
