Mitchell" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com To Rami, GBA and NCBA are great events you will enjoy them! A couple of suggestions I would make, bring bottled water, hotels have very dry air even though people will be soaking reed all around you it is dry! Remember to keep yourself hydrated. Bring some energy bars and healthy snacks for breakfast in case you get up too late to get a real meal or miss lunch or dinner due to more important things like shopping. Dress in layers as it will either be too cool or too warm...(or is that just me?). There are lots of restaurants surrounding the GBA location, several within walking distance... and the bartender in the hotel bar makes a great Margarita, I did some extensive testing last year when I attended GBA. NCBA is big about 700 people attend, it could seem a little overwhelming, but it is a great bunch of friendly people. Lots of vending in the ballroom and in sleeping room vending on the first floor. The hotel has a mini bus and will drive you to and from local eateries if you don't have a car (or will be field testing Margaritas). One restaurant that is close by is called the Blue Moon, has great food and will also deliver meals to the hotel. The front desk at the hotel has a listing of local restaurants and can help you find what you need. Enjoy your first time at these conventions, I am sure you will hooked and want to attend even more! Happy Weaving from Minneapolis MN where it is 18* and snowing. I can't wait for March so I can drive south to NCBA! Karen L. Mitchell" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com First of all thanks to David for continuing to publish the Weavers Words, David you are a real trouper and my hero! I would like to comment on the commercial content of the WW. Everyone has the right to their own opinion and I am not trying to change anyone's mind, but I have a few things to say. First, I think that everyone should contribute some money to David for publishing and keeping WW going. It is very easy to send David money via paypal or drop a check in the mail. Most of us are members of at least one guild, why not think of receiving Weaver Words as belonging to an "online guild" and send some money to David for the privilege of receiving this newsletter? Over the years we have all received a lot of information via WW. I do not know David personally; I am expressing MY view on this, so if there are those who think paying for an email newsletter is out of line you can complain to me about my idea, not David. (And, yes, I have sent money to David over the years, just in case any of you are wondering if I follow my own advice.) As far as the commercial aspect goes, I want to know about classes, sales, retail shops, conferences and workshops. I don't think that people who want to "advertise" should be any different than anyone else; everyone who reads WW should contribute financially to support David's efforts. If there is content in the WW you are not interested in, be it "advertisements" or techniques you don't do, or people's personal commentary about their lives, all you have to do is scroll past that particular post and read the next one! There is room for everyone here and David has always made sure of that. If David wants to charge for "ads" or for delivery of this email, I am sure he will let us all know that... but meanwhile think about checking out Paypal and send in your "dues"!... just my suggestion! Jim Widess, the owner, in conjunction with Ginger Summit, have written several books on gourds, and one of my gourds (by StoneyRidge) is in their first book called "The Complete Book of Gourd Craft." - In regards to the cutting tool and the miniature jigsaw, also available is a saw blade for the exacto handle that does a very good job (blades cost about a dollar), and makes a thin cut, so important when you want to save the part you are cutting off for the lid. The miniature jigsaw makes a thicker cut, and is of course, easier and faster to cut with. I have both, and it depends on the application as to which tool I choose. It was great. We all had a great time. It was relaxing and fun. We spent part of our time weaving and had time to go shopping and see the sights and we also went to a play put on by students from Indiana University. The were four ladies from out East and one from Texas, one from Virginia and one other, besides myself from Indiana. But the best part was meeting two girls from my hometown in Jackson, Michigan. Now we run into each other at Conventions and when time allows, we try to keep in touch through e-mails. So, if you aren't sure if this would be a Fun filled weekend, be assured you will have a great time. It is very well worth it. I*m glad to see WW coming back--I*ve missed everyone. I seldom weave and I did a major cleaning out of the "basketroom" and tossed old reed, handles, etc... keeping just the basics. I still make amulets and small do-dads with waxed linen, but I spend what little spare time I have painting and beading. The weaving "bug" is still there, but not as active as it used to be. Still absolutely love my job at Borders. Wish I had done this years ago. The Denise Feeney pattern - I used to have it. It is a large (done on a 10 x 14 D handle, I think) round basket with a woven pocket under the handle--for scissors. There is a product, available at art supply houses/shops that was made for baskets, dried flowers, etc.--and it comes in a "whitewash" color. It sprays on and looks great. Again, nice to hear from WW again--thanks, David. Lois Keener Honolulu %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Country Ash Sent: Monday, January 26, 2004 9:30 PM From: Sarah Hartman To: davidc@iei.net Sharon, Look for Berkshire Ash. It's not by the same folks but it's the same material. Somebody told me Royalwood is carrying it but I haven't checked it out yet. Don't have their catalog handy to give you their contact info but if you look up Royalwood in a search engine, they'll come up. My two cents worth on vendors postings... Eileen Mirsberger is an example of really good vendor etiquette. She comes in, answers questions in a non-commercial way, and her "advertising" is in her signature (shop name, web site, etc.) By the way, for anyone living in Northern Il/Southern WI, East Troy is a scenic 15 min drive east of Lake Geneva, WI, They carry good quality materials, lots of patterns and books, very helpful staff, lots of classes. I really liked Faye's idea of the paid advertisements and all the benefits they would bring to David and WW. David, love your idea of sending posting every Sunday! We all wondered where it went! About advertising. It is kind of a pain when someone just uses the site to sell stuff, but the same could be said for people advertising classes. They both end up making money BUT sometimes it's nice to find out when someone has a good deal on something. They may just have what I have been looking for. Also, mentioning classes has been great at times. I have been able to attend things I might never have known about. I feel like if I am not interested in the ad or class announcement, I just scanned down and keep on reading until I find something that does interest me. Just my opinion. Everybody has one I am sure. Figure people are going to write what they want no matter what so... so be it. Had a great time in Newport News, VA at Guilders Weave. It was my first time attending and I was so impressed. Tidewater Guild members worked very hard for this event. It was one of the nicest events I have been to. I especially enjoyed the Hospitality Room where the Guild offered soft drinks, coffee, tea and snacks throughout the day. The room was a great social meeting place. I thought it was a great idea. The Banquet was very nice and there was a door prize for everyone. Top-notch teachers attended and offered really good classes. Thank you Tidewater Basket Guild members for putting on a quality weaving weekend. I so look forward to attending next year. It is not to be missed. I will be teaching at Ft. Belvoir Army Installation art and crafts center. Any teachers out there that have catalogs of kits and supplies to sell please email me and give me the opportunity to send you my address. I am always on the lookout for new things to teach. To add a comment on dyeing woven baskets - I never have had a problem with the shape of a basket distorting when staining or dyeing. Shouldn't be a problem. On another note - Basket Bash is set for March 26, 27 & 28, 2004. A little earlier than usual. The Bash for those of you who have never attended, is three days of fun-filled weaving held at Camp Fowler in Mayville, Michigan. That's in the middle of the thumb area. All meals, lodging and teaching for one fee. The materials fee is the only additional cost. Teachers this year are Marilyn Wald, Sandy Atkinson, Nancy Carlson, Susie Billingsley and me, Ruthanne Morningstar. There's lots of fun and learning going on at this event along with bon fire, weather permitting, door prizes, teacher's marketplace, basket exchange, evening programs, etc. If anyone is interested, you can contact me at rmstar@mich.com, or 4915 S. This is a great way for everyone to share information. The last post had so many people offering suggestions on ways to rescue brittle reed. In my opinion, bad reed makes a bad basket. No matter how well you weave or how beautiful your basket design is, the finished product is only as good as the material that goes into it. If anyone has reed that is so difficult to work with, get rid of it! Get a new bundle of reed and start over. With so many conventions coming up in spring, I'm sure many people will be traveling with their tools. If you're not sure how to pack them, call the airline you are traveling on. They would be the best people to tell you how to pack things, and what problems you may have. If the first person you talk to doesn't have any answers, ask to speak with someone else. Another option is to contact the hotel where you will be staying and see if they would be OK accepting a package for you. Carefully pack up your tools, and mail them to yourself in care of the hotel you are staying at. Mail them with enough time so they will be there waiting for you. When the convention is over, simply repack them and ship them back to yourself at home. It may cost a few dollars in shipping costs, but may save you headaches at the airport! Jill Choate - it's always fun reading about your adventures with the dogs. My two cents worth regarding "advertising". I think the logistics of charging people to post an ad are mind boggling. What is considered an ad? If I post to let people know about an event hosted by our guild, is that an ad? How would that differ from a retreat owner posting to let us know about an upcoming weaving event? Are shop owners limited in what they can post about guest teachers they have coming in to teach classes? Are they allowed to tell us they have a book in stock that may help someone with a problem they are having? Would I not be allowed to post to tell everyone about some great weaving product I just purchases from so-and-so because I'd be giving a "plug" to so-and-so? If someone is new to an area, or new to basket weaving in general, isn't Weavers Words meant to be a source for information, whether it's an event/convention/class/guild, or a source for different types of materials, help with a technique, or anything else? Would limiting "advertising" force David into censoring our messages, and he'd have to make the decision on what to pass on to the rest of us? Isn't that a bit much to ask him to do - after all, he doesn't actually READ each post completely; he just adds basketry related e-mails to the digest and sends it out. I for one am glad to hear about what's going on in the world of basketry. If I come to a paragraph in Weavers Words that I don't think interests me, I skip over it! Simple as that. With that said, here's a bit of advertising for the Lake County Basket Guild's Basket Fest, which is quickly approaching April 30 - May 2, 2004. This is our 11th year hosting this event, and will be held in Brookfield, Wisconsin, just west of Milwaukee. The first round of registrations closes on Jan 31, and some classes will probably fill right away, but there will still be many great classes to choose from. 11 wonderful instructors will be teaching a total of 33 great classes! Would you update us as to the best one to use? For the person looking for a knitting basket pattern... I made a basket a few years ago at NCBA. It was actually called a Spinner's Tote, and was designed to hold yarn and drop spindles. It works very well for knitting needles and yarn. The basket is round (about 8") and 12 inches high -- it could easily be made taller for longer needles. There is a lid, held in place by Shaker tapes, which form the handle and are long enough to sling over a shoulder. The basket was designed by JoHanna Heller, Lagniappe Weavers, 504/345-4262. I thought it might be of interest to some viewers(readers), to know of the OKLA./ARK. Weave In coming up in March. Coiling will be offered by me, Rena Vickery. I will teach pine needle coiling on gourds, with antler insert. And a small coiled tray with an agate center, (starter). The dates will be March 26, 27, and 28th, at held at Bella Vista, Ark. It promises to be a lot of fun with weavers to interact with. There are several other classes with other styles of baskets to weave. I will be one of the smaller weave in's, so join in for the fun!!!!!! For more information you can either e-mail me or Chris Dahl, dahl_99@msn.com. She can give you all the information you need. If you are interested in taking classes, you might act on it pretty soon. E-mail me if you have any more questions. rscmv@texhoma.net Rena Vickery, rscmv@texhoma.net %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: Pumpkin Recipe For Rit Dye Date: Wed, 28 Jan 2004 21:49:21 -0500 From: "Barbara McGeachy" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com Eileen - Thanks for the pumpkin recipe for Rit dye! Roxboro is a small town in northern central NC and the guild there hosted a weave-in last weekend that was wonderful! I learned how to weave a God's eye with 4 different colors from Ann Coleman, and I learned a new double-wall technique from Miss Jimmie Kent. But mostly, I had fun! To Rami who is going to her first NCBA convention: Before the convention, make a list of the supplies you need. The vendors are great - from all over the country - lots of selections. No shipping & handling, and with the competition right across the aisle, the prices are very competitive. And there are so many things that aren't in any catalog. Plan to spend lots of time browsing. Also make a list of classes you wanted but didn't get into. The patterns might be available in the pattern room or teachers' marketplace. Bring your tools and mark them with your name. You'll also need a bucket, old towels, and an apron. Each teacher gives you the kit with the weaving materials and pattern for the class. Also, consider bringing some baskets for the exhibit room. If you have woven less than 2 years, enter one in the "new weaver" category. There are about a dozen other categories to enter too (see the convention brochure for details). It costs nothing and you may win $25 or a ribbon. No one knows if you lose, only if you win! The convention is so wonderful, so much fun jam-packed into 4 days! This year will be my 7th and it is more fun every year! Keep Weavin'! I called the phone number that was in one of the messages on this forum - left my name and phone number - but no response. Does anyone know if this company is still in business -- or is there some other place where I can purchase these handles. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks. Does anyone know how this is done? They are simply slipped into the spokes at the end of the baskets, and the basket rests on them, thus saving the basket bottom from wear. A simple way to make a skid is to take a rectangular piece of wood, say 1" wide and 1/2" thick, or use a piece of 1/2" or 5/8" half round reed. Cut 2 pieces slightly shorter than the length of your base, and taper the ends on one side only (on the rounded side if you use half round reed) so they will slip under the end spokes. Slip one end in really far (flat side against the basket) so that it protrudes from the end, then slip the other end in and center. If you have not tapered too much, they should fit tightly. Sometimes, I insert a plywood insert into the basket, then I can screw the skids to the insert. This is more permanent, but you can replace worn skids simply by unscrewing and putting new ones on. If you are doing a pack basket, you can notch the flat side so that you can slide the straps between the basket and the skid. This is a great idea for my next newsletter, so I will use it with a diagram. It probably won't be out until April as there just isn't enough time before then.
