I highly recommend the John C. Campbell Folks School in western NC. Call 1-800-FOL-KSCH or www.folkschool.com They offer a basket class almost every week of the year. Also, they offer lots of other classes. Also, the Earth Guild (a store for basket supplies and other craft supplies) in Asheville, NC offers classes. They are at 1-800-327-8448 and at www.earthguild.com Also, there's the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. I haven't taken classes there but I've heard good things about it. As for dying a basket after you make it, make it a quick dip and you should be okay. Don't soak it, especially if it has any glue (often used on wood D handles). Another alternative is to put a concentrated dye in a spray bottle and spray the basket. Barbara in Raleigh, NC %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Rit Dye In Pumpkin Sent: Sunday, December 14, 2003 4:05 PM From: "Barbara McGeachy" To: "David Collins" Hi, Does anyone know how to make pumpkin color dye using Rit powder? I bought some years ago and love it, but it's no longer offered by Rit (see www.ritdye.com). The color match page doesn't show pumpkin (see http://www.ritdye.com/ritproline/color_recipes.asp). I can experiment, but if anyone has figured this out, it would be a big help! FYI. My favorite combination is teal-aubergine-pumpkin = really striking! While I still look forward to receiving WW since I love anything to do with baskets, the content is a shadow of earlier issues. For the first few years the content functioned much like a fine text on the art of basketmaking. In fact, much of what I care most about in my work came from information drawn from reading the entire WW archive. It was, in the old days, like going to basket school. Lately the tone is, essentially commercial. And there is little about basketmaking other that opportunities to buy or attend workshops. Perhaps a fee for commercial notices would be a good idea and a regular section on basket hints with themes for each issue: e.g., dyeing, shaping, etc. would draw some interesting replies that would enrich us all. Thank you, David, for being there. Helen Schwartz %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Oak Basket Classes Date: Sun, 14 Dec 2003 22:58:17 -0600 From: "Theresa Owens" To: "David G. They are a special order item and I believe are made by Bob Coker. Their phone number is 906-337-5116. Their web site is www.weavenet.com/gratiot.html. Nuke, Your post didn't indicate the effect you want for your finished baskets. If you are interested in a natural looking finish in wood tones, most basket supply shops carry Weavers Stain, Deft, or other oil based stains. In a pinch, MinWax or other commercial stains can be brushed on to give nice color to a basket. If you want to do a color, such as blue, red, purple, etc. Rit dye works well. You can brush it on for a very faint shadowing effect. If you want serious color from a dye, you will need to find a pot big enough to hold your basket or plan on holding different sections of your basket under the dye (please wear rubber gloves.) If you go for serious color, don't know of a way you can get around having to reshape your baskets. Perhaps some of the readers who are more experienced with dye can answer that. All, Spent the afternoon dyeing reed for Christmas gift baskets. Did my first ever space dyed reed yesterday for a class. The student used it for the twilled market basket in the Lyn Siler book (the white cover one). She had never twilled before and made a stunning basket. Used the leftover dye today for another batch - the colors came out much softer due to the dye bath starting to play out. Can't wait to use it in something. Glad you're back with us. To the person who asked about dyeing baskets after they were completed, I wanted to share a tip I learned long ago. Sometimes I don't want to stain my baskets but I'm not fond of that "raw" color. I prepare a dilute mix of Rit Pearl Grey or one of the brown dyes, and spray it out of a spray bottle over the basket. It really looks nice and has no odor. Also, it doesn't distort the shape of the basket. Plymouth Reed and Cane no longer has a storefront. When I saw Lorraine Justice at the Indiana Convention this past spring she could be reached at this number 734-455-2150. Hope this helps. I'm as guilty as everyone else for not posting, and I mean to do better from now on - I am saddened to see the sites and chat rooms and everything about basketry that was such a rich and fascinating source online seem to wither away. So, here is my 2 cents on some questions in the current issue! >>>>>I am new to weaving and have a question about dyeing baskets after >>>>>completion. I have several completed baskets, which I would now like to >>>>>tint, but I am hesitant, thinking that they will lose their shape if I do. >>>>>My intuition tells me that I can go ahead and dye them in a warm liquid >>>>>bath of tea or coffee, but I will have to be careful to reshape each one. >>>>>Rats - I like them just the way they are! Any friendly advice? Hi Nuke, Go ahead and dye your baskets! I personally don't give mine a bath, rather, I pour the dye over them. The baskets shouldn't get out of shape from that. >>>>>Which space-dyed reed is the most like FALL colors?? I cant order too many >>>>>lbs just to look at it; have order for fall basket with fall colors and I >>>>>cant dye all that. so thought I would use Space dyed. >>>>> >>>>>Thanks, >>>>>Nancy Hi Nancy, This is probably way late for fall baskets! I like the 'earthtones' and the 'Victorian' spacedyes. Just about everyone has those. The Victorian especially makes me think of Indian corn colors. For the blazing colors of fall foliage NorEsta does a space dye, but I can't find the order slip with the name on it - I just ask for the one that looks kinda like candy corn! >>>>>Does anyone know where I can purchase a shave horse or plans for one?? >>>>> >>>>>Thanks, >>>>>Karen Johnson Hi Karen, I've seen a good shave horse in Gratiot Lake's catalog. I took white oak classes with Scot and Beth from GH Productions, and I think they may also sell good shave horses. I also noticed a plan for a simple shave horse in "Basketry of the Appalachian Mountains" by Sue Stephenson. My husband makes shaves horses and I sell them. A full-blown, sit down unit. Good looking. Assembles easy and is very portable. If you would like an e-flyer, contact me at Acre8shun@aol.com or call (864) 879-7877 in South Carolina and I can snail mail a copy. Sorry, no website. Patricia, I like your idea about limiting advertisements. Not eliminating, just limiting exactly as you suggested. To the lady who wants to try staining a basket. Dipping your basket in a liquid won't bother the shape. I have a big Rubbermaid bucket of black walnut stain that I make from the hulls. I immerse the entire basket in the bath, hose it off, then remove excess water by whipping it around (in the yard not the house). There's a neat black walnut powder that works very well that can be purchased through the basket supply houses. You just mix it with water and ta! da! you have the same stain that I make from hulls. Be adventuresome. Have an idea? Go for it! Baskets love to be experimented with. I have a tip for getting the rim of a round basket perfectly round. Have several different sized flowerpots around and place your basket upside down on the pot and let it dry for a day or two. Perfectly round. I use both terra cotta pots and plastic ones. For weight reasons I prefer the plastics ones. I have a dozen different sizes around and they fit so well into each other that they hardly take up any space. I'll say Merry Christmas because it's one week away, but by the time this bunch of chat gets published it might be Happy Valentines Day. Whatever! Happy Happy. It was strange not finding WW in my e-mail and I realized how much I had missed all the information, as I don't have a lot of time to go to all of the other websites that are out there. Possibly that's why we don't see as much interaction between weavers. Someone had made that comment concerning conventions as there are many more places to weave than were available 5 years ago. Not that I'm complaining, I wish I had more time to go to visit other areas. So I guess if it's important we'll see more chatting among the weavers--Ill try and do my part. Thanks for the space. I guess everyone has been weaving up a storm of holiday gifts. I know I did - 7 projects in over Thanksgiving weekend and a few more since then. Hope you're all weaving and not down with the flu. Last summer at the MO Guild Convention I bought kits to make woven pill boxes and key chains. I think these were from Karen Mitchell. The top of the pill box and a decorative round piece on the key chain were covered with woven copper. I made them as gifts for my sister who collects pill boxes (and takes a lot of meds) and for a friend who must also take a lot of medicines. I gave their husbands the key chains so they wouldn't feel left out. Does anyone know where I can get these findings? I think I was told to try a woodworkers' shop, but haven't had any luck. This fall I learned to weave and decorate gourds. I've found a source for gourds, but find that I need (in addition to my dremel tool) a small electric saw. Anyone have any idea where I could get that? I suppose I should have gotten this info earlier so I could hint for my birthday, but I do have January b-day. If I could get the information soon, I could hint for that. Best wishes to everyone for a great 2004. Let's make New Year's Resolutions to write WW more often! I like to hear about upcoming conventions, etc., but really like the exchange of questions and helpful answers. Merry Christmas (late) and Happy New Year! I don't remember having this problem before. I have tried twining and also using small flat reed to do my bases with the center punched up in the middle. My bases are flat they just don't sit flat on the table. It looks as if the handle, which is the bottom, most spoke is too thick or something and so the reed doesn't touch the table, only the handle. My handles aren't any thicker than usual. I do fine with other bases that have D handles and I do fine with round bases, if they don't have a D Handle in it. I don't know why I am having a problem now after so many years of weaving. Any ideas?? I can't believe how few messages have been coming through.
