School is finally back in and after 8 days with my students, I am back in my element. Of course we have had to deal with lots of tears and the normal adjustments, but I can honestly say I am glad to see my students again. It will take all of them a while to get back into the routine and unfortunately I have to be really strict in the beginning so we can get settled more quickly. I have heard from a few people about the Stone Flower Basket by Mary E. Skillings. I hope everyone takes a look at Basketpatterns.com. It is really a beautiful basket and fun to make. And no I don't even know the author, but I think we should give credit to really great basket authors. We have had so much rain in North Carolina where I live that the grass is growing like crazy. I don't remember ever having so much rain in August. The only really bad thing is the weeds in my flower gardens and the mosquitoes. We will need some really good freezes to kill off these bad boys. Well, not much else to say, so I'll sign off for now. I have enjoyed reading all the e-mails and find it really interesting! It is all so exciting to hear of so many people interested in baskets!!! My Father & I have owned and operated a basket shop -"Oak Baskets by Owens", in Branson, Missouri now for around 12 years. Where I cut and strip my own White Oak, and weave into baskets. I travel and teach this beautiful art, that has been passed down in my family for many generations. We also have a web site that might be of interest to many of you. Our web site offers many choices of White Oak baskets as well as White Oak basket kits. Our local Ben Franklin Crafts store carries them. If all you are missing is the button then you may be able to just pick one up and re-attach it. It is always a good idea to check and see that the glue has not released on the wooden pegged joints, especially if your handle has been in your "stock" for awhile. Sometimes they are only tension fit and not glued at all! If you get the handle in a very dry environment the peg can srink away from the button and fall off. Wyant" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Hello Fellow Weavers! I have never posted to WW before, but I read it religiously... Thanks David for everything you do for the newsletter. I was wondering if someone could tell me how to "stiffen" ribbon for making flowers on a basket. I had some in a kit I had purchased at the IBA convention, but it did not tell you how to make it if you chose to make the basket again. Help please! Thanks & Happy Weaving! We wanted to know if anyone could tell us if there are any basket weavers, guilds or shops up there? We enjoy our new found hobby (since Oct.). We are going to miss Norma owner of Basket Class. What a mentor and friend she has become! We are hoping this maybe a business opportunity for us eventually, so if any one has some advice on it, we would welcome it. My sister lives in Aberdeen, SD and we may extend our business there with her help so any information on weavers, guilds, and shops there would be helpful as well. We enjoyed our summer workshops in Dewitt, IA, Pewaukee, WI and Weaving in Winona. What fun those were to attend. We learn a lot of new techniques and have enjoyed creating baskets and teaching a couple of classes ourselves. It was fun to become friends with new weavers and to hear their stories. (A special hello to our MN friends who call my husband "Cabana boy") We also have enjoyed seeing all the helpful tips that we receive in weaver's words. Some we have used and some we cannot wait to try. Thanks for this wonderful site. God Bless! THANK YOU... to the person who mentioned that she loved Sweet Gum Ball stain earlier this year. I put some sweet gum balls down in a container, covered them and waited. I let the stain age for a few months and I used it for the first time Friday evening on a basket and took it to guild Saturday. I had several people ask me what stain I used and was surprised at my reply. It takes that edge off of natural reed, but does not overpower it. Thanks again! I would not have thought about sweet gum without that spark of info in WW. We haven't watered our potted outdoor plants all summer; but my house is turning green. About black dye. Some years ago, I printed out a note on Weavers Words from Judith Olney -- all about how she does black dye. I printed it out on March 4, 1997; its long but perhaps the whole thing is still on "back issues". She used (before 1997) to add a little Golden Yellow Rit to the black dye pot. In this article, she states that she uses liquid black Rit, adds some powdered Rit Kelly green and some liquid Rit dark brown. No, I haven't tried this. Judith Olney does always wet her reed before dying and she does not rinse until she is ready to weave. I hope you can find the article. What a bummer to not be able to weave. Is it possible to incorporate weaving into therapy once you regain some mobility/dexterity? Would be happy to get together and weave when you are able again. Sarah in the NW burbs of Chicago where we've had a few sunny days and the tomatoes are starting to ripen. I have some exciting news to tell all you budding basket, seat weaving and web entrepreneurs about. Prolific small business craft writer Barbara Brabec has done it again, by producing a newly revised edition of her ever popular and helpful HOMEMADE MONEY, first published in 1984. But this time, she has added so much new information that it required two-volumes! HOMEMADE MONEY--STARTING SMART! shows the reader how to set up and run a profitable home based business that is perfectly suited to your individual situation. From the basics of selecting a craft, to pursue or choosing a business name, to abiding by zoning laws, and setting up your workplace, Barbara guides you though every step of the way. This is truly a Bible for all craftspeople, and should be in everyone's reference library, whether you are a novice craftsperson or seasoned professional. No matter what type of small home based business you are in or considering starting, there's something in this book to make your life more enjoyable and profitable. Then in HOMEMADE MONEY--BRINGING IN THE BUCKS!, Brabec continues by adding examples featuring various craftspeople's marketing plans that work, how to publicize your business without laying out much dough, getting more "bang for your buck" by writing, teaching and lecturing, and sharing your knowledge. Then too, there are chapters on licensing, insurance, identity theft, copyrights and trademarks. The Internet has virtually exploded and taken center stage since HANDMADE MONEY first came out, so in this edition there are several chapters which thoroughly discuss all aspects of working on the Net such as; website creation, development, promotion, marketing, using photographs, branding, and getting high ratings on the Search Engines. Throughout this new book Barbara explains how and why you must diversify your business, the best way to work with employees and family members, how and when to expand your business, or move to bigger and better quarters. She also discusses what happens when and how to go about closing your business and moving on to other endeavors. Barbara Brabec as some of you readers of The Crafts Report might remember, wrote a monthly craft column for the publication for several years. She is also author of HANDMADE FOR PROFIT, and THE CRAFTS BUSINESS ANSWER BOOK and several others. Visit her website and subscribe to her very informative newsletter at Barbara Brabec's World http://www.BarbaraBrabec.com Just published! The all-new two-volume edition of HOMEMADE MONEY! Get details on Barbara's newly-designed and greatly expanded Web site at http://www.barbarabrabec.com/homemade_money.htm I am very privileged to "know" Barbara via the Internet and telephone conversations and to have many of my small business advice tips and suggestions appear in HANDMADE FOR PROFIT, HOMEMADE MONEY--STARTING SMART! and HOMEMADE MONEY--BRINGING IN THE BUCKS!
