Remove from your refrigerator and let it come up to room temperature before using. If the nozzle gets plugged up try opening it with a "straight pin". Sometimes some glue will solidify at the top of the nozzle... just cut the solidified glue off and use the pin. You can purchase "Instaset" to make the glue cure rapidly. Sets up in just a couple of minutes. One source is Dels in Freetown, MA. Dels has a website you can access by searching for Nantucket Baskets on a search engine such as "Google". If you are making the basket at home, as opposed to a class, you may want to consider using a glue such as Elmers Wood Glue. Glue your rim joint, clamp it, and let it sit over night. The advantages are that it is less expensive and you can adjust the glue joint if you don't clamp it correctly the first time. (No controversial topics, I promise! I have enough excitement in my life!!) I am enjoying my last real week off from teaching school. Teachers are due to go back on July 28th, but I will try to get some work done in my classroom during the week of the 21st. The district will have us so busy with workshops and meetings during the workdays, (thanks to George Bush!!!) so I have to go in early. Trust me, I am not an eager beaver, but I am new at the grade levels I am teaching and want to do a better job. So, anyway, I haven't been weaving a lot, but I did get to make a new basket called "The Stone-Flower Basket" by Mary E. Skillings. It was gorgeous and really simple to make. I gave the one I made to my doctor who has retired, so I ordered more handles to make more. I have been weaving a very long time, more than 15 years, and it's nice to find a basket that is really different and exciting. If you haven't seen this basket, go to basketpatterns.com and take a look. It is great! I also have several other new patterns, but I haven't got around to making them yet. Also this summer, I have repainted my living room and den area (it's actually one room) a golden yellow. I put a basket border at the top, painted the ceiling white, and waxed my old hardwood floors. I am so pleased with how it turned out. I just wish it would stay this clean and dust free forever! Not too much to ask, huh? Sometime in the next few months, I plan to paint the ceilings white and the walls red in my kitchen. I am going to use the same basket border. And then for Labor Day, I plan to wallpaper the guest bathroom. I enjoy working in and out of the house. I keep telling my husband to let me quit my job! I could keep myself busy easily!!! Too bad he's not listening!! I will have a very small class again this year and hope to write a grant to allow me to make baskets with them after our yearly testing in May. I have done it before and been able to use school funds, but money is scarce these days. I am very blessed to have a job. I am think about making very simple rainsticks, but I need to make up a pattern. I also have to find a grant. I do hope we have a basket swap soon also. It does energize me to make new baskets and I love receiving baskets from all across the country. I have many baskets I have received all through the years and love every one. My principal (who is new to me - I only moved to this school last year) wants me to teach basket weaving to any of the staff members who would like to learn. I also taught a class of gifted children in third grade last year. It is very hard to teach gifted children in my opinion. I would much rather teach my students (Emotionally Disabled) or average kids - they listen better! I admire anyone who works with gifted children. They drive me a little batty!!! Shirley Albrecht: You said you have new lashing and weaving tools. I would like to know about them and if they are available for those of us who won't be at the convention. I cannot imagine how I ever survived without the lash buddy that came out a few years ago. Please email me and let me know. Dot in Maine: What is Insta Cure? Brenda Johnson: If you are still out there, please email me. I have lost your email address and have missed you! That's all for now. Now if everyone babbles on like I have, David will be busy once again! I had mentioned in an earlier writing that we have basket weaving classes in the Dry Ridge Outlet Center in Grant County, Kentucky, as well as baskets and other works of local artisans for sale. Much to my surprise, while checking our guest book, Bonnie Kuhr had signed our book in June. Sorry Bonnie, I wasn't working that day. We have classes on Monday evenings beginning at 7:00p.m., Ginny Hamilton usually has extra supplies with her, If you're traveling through, stop by and join us. You can call 859-824-3451 or 859-356-6796 for details on our classes. We're working on the next two months schedule. If you need one, you can email me for that list. I know what you mean about not missing teaching. Every once in awhile I think that I should start up again but I'd have to do it in my home and that doesn't sound too safe, here in the states. Too antsy about having strangers in my home, I guess. I've been working full time at the youth center on the base, since moving here and divorcing. So, not much time for weaving anymore. I have made the time for quilting as that will be my Christmas presents to all this year. I think they've received enough baskets from me in the last 7 years! Funny thing- my craft room has reed hanging from the ceiling and stacked on shelves... at least I get to visit with it. LOL. Hopefully will get back into it in the winter and then I can weave on my lanai, while I watch the fish jump. Darleena J %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Trips Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 10:58:23 -0400 From:"drpain" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Just got back from two wonderful trips. I taught basket making in Kentucky and how to make cardboard dulcimers in Ireland. While in Kentucky I taught a week long class 30 adults and 28 kids.( This is a week long Music Festival where people learn how to play all kinds of musical instruments they also offer a few craft classes) It went really well they all did a wonderful job. The kids all completed their baskets on time they all looked great. I was taken back at how many people signed up for basket making this year. I asked them how come. They all wanted to try and get back to an easier way of life. (Some found out that basket making wasn't that easy) Some of my repeat students from years past did a few harder baskets. They are all hooked, I know next year the class well be even bigger and I will have to take someone along to help me. Maybe a weeklong basket making only class. I still think dulcimers and baskets go together really well. I also have made allot of friends over the 20 years I have taught basket making at Kentucky Music Week. I just love the people in the Bards town area they all so nice. My other trip was to Ireland I went there to teach music but it also turned into a basket hunt. My husband had seen a sign Basketry Workshops. He saw this when we were on a bus tour in March. Being the good basket maker husband he remembered where. So we rented a car after the dulcimer festival and set out to find the basket workshops. Well we found it!!! It was like something out of the past. They are really neat people who live up on a Mt. side and have and wonderful basket workshop. They do willow baskets only. They do workshops but only in the fall and winter. Now remember Ireland only get snow once in a blue moon. I did manage to bring home one big basket. Had a time getting it on the plane. Cost me a box of candy for the stewardess. Well if anyone would like to more about the Ireland trip they can e-mail me. I have ever posted anything so long. I guess you can tell I am a little excited about the trips. Well keep weaving and hope everyone keeps in good health. We readers all learn so much about our common love of basketry, but you also give us cause to learn a great deal about humanity, and for that, I'm deeply grateful. I want to thank Ginger Lindamood, Bonnie Krist, Karen Douglass, Sharon Dempsey, Bernie Jines, and the ladies of the Heritage Basketry Guild of Dayton for an absolutely fabulous time July 12th at the Mid Summer Weave in Dayton, Ohio. In times where we are sometimes seeing attendance levels dropping at conventions, this weave-in is growing, and it's because of the organization and hard work of this group of ladies. From the goodie bags to the raffle prizes to the vendors, and especially to the terrific teachers and variety of baskets offered, this weave-in was definitely a class act! So, ladies, get ready, because we are coming back next year anxious to do it again. And, we are bringing friends!!!!!! I meant to say: Deer Creek Basketry Guild will have our 14th annual sale at the Harford County Farm Fair next week. Last year sales were just under $3,000. Members who sell must work 5 hours during the 4 days and the guild gets 10% of sales. Last year it was very hot and also rained one day. We are hoping for good sales again. Lets get weaving! I hear that reed sales are down. I haven't posted in a very long time, but I always enjoy reading what everyone is doing. I just wanted to tell you that our guild here in Reno, Nevada has a great new website. http://www.greatbasinbasketmakers.org/ Take a look when you get a chance and let us hear from you. We are adding some photos of baskets made by our members. Our name comes from our area of Northern Nevada, the Great Basin. We are in the process of writing a book about our native plants and how to use them in basketry. Keep checking the website for publication information. I have been cutting down some small Elm trees and find the bark just wonderful to twine with. Does anyone on the list have any experience with it? I would like to learn more about its uses and preparation. I found that every time I soak it, it becomes much darker in color. Nice stuff, but all that slippery stuff is pretty messy! Any ideas on this? Hope to hear from you. I know this has been discussed in the past, but at that time, it wasn't something of interest to me --- rather, it wasn't something of interest to my husband. My husband is toying with cutting some wood bases for me. I'm thrilled!! The one problem he is running into is the slot --- he can't seem to make one that is thin enough. Can any of your offer suggestions? I am settled in VA now with a great house backed up to the woods. I am anxious to harvest honeysuckle vine and use it in my weaving. Just back from vacation in Vermont where I will be bringing some baskets to a small town, Greensboro to sell. The vacation on the lake was just what the doctor ordered. So relaxing. John McGuire was here in Northern Virginia recently and taught a wonderful 2-day workshop. We made his beautiful Salad bowl. John was a great teacher. Funny, patient and kind with praise. It was unbelievable to have had the opportunity to work with John. I am so glad he is back to teaching. We had a blast and would welcome the opportunity to work with him again. I bought his Carve n' Scarf and it has made a huge difference in my rims. Scarfing has never been so easy. It has been really helpful to scrape cane as well. Birch bark logs are sitting in my garage. I picked up a few while in Vermont. I just read a portion of a book in which Cass Schorsch has written info regarding preparation for birch bark. I am not sure if I can cut the bark off these old logs or not. Anyone ever just take fire wood logs and get the bark off it and find it useable??? Please help!!! Adirondack backpacks on sale in St. Johnsbury were amazing. Very large. Mostly done in ash, some smooth and others rough cut. Bill McGrowski (not sure I have the name right) in Maine did a gorgeous job. There were several other weavers in the store but didn't get all the names. Someday... Well off to clean up the weaving room. I have the great fortune of having a large room in my house to work in. What a huge change from the closet I had in Hawaii!!!
