I WON'T NAME NAMES BUT THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND HOW MUCH THEY ARE APPRECIATED!!! This hasn't been a good week for our family. Monday morning my cousin, Jeannie, called in an absolute panic. Her house was on fire and she was frantically trying to get her two young children, Jace and Kellyn, out of the house. By the time we called tithe fire department and rushed to their house, the house engulfed in flames and smoke. Thankfully no one was hurt but her and her two children practically lost everything that they owned. What wasn't lost to the flames and smoke was lost to the water from the heroic fireman's water hoses. We've been busy helping to find them temporary housing and helping with the children. If you know anything about me, you know that Jeannie, Jace and Kellyn mean the world to me and I can't stand the thought of them having to start over. So I have set up a fire relief fund to help them in the daunting task of starting over. If you can make a donation to the fund, it would be greatly appreciated. Anything that you can offer will be extremely helpful. I have set up a PayPal account for the relief fund. If you already have a PayPal account, the address that you can send donations to is: firerelieffund@yahoo.com If you don't have a PayPal account, you can easily sign up by using the following link: https://www.paypal.com/refer/pal=JYBGKVF4U5R6E It only takes about 5 minutes to create a PayPal account and you use it to send money. PayPal is a free service and it is 100% secure. If you prefer, donations can also be sent to: Fire Relief Fund c/o David Collins 408 North Devon Avenue Indianapolis, IN 46219-5334 I normally wouldn't make a request like this but these kids mean the world to me. Every penny from this fund will go directly to the family. With nearly 1,400 subscribers to Weaver's Words I thought this would be a great place to start the fund. THIS IS NOT AN INTERNET HOAX. THIS MESSAGE IS COMING DIRECTLY FROM ME, DAVID COLLINS OF WEAVER'S WORDS. Thank you again for time and generosity, David Collins Weaver's Words P.S. Keep those Weaver's Words messages coming. The messages have REALLY slowed down lately. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Paper Fibre Rush Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 06:49:07 -0500 From: "Cathryn Peters" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com, betbaskets@juno.com Tammy, Guess I should have read your next post before sending the information on the Danish Cord... Anyway, most paper fibre rush is bundled in two-pound coils these days, although you can always buy the 35 lbs. spools, too. Maybe it's still sold in 5 lbs. coils, but I don't know of any supplier that marketing that size coil, sorry. Here again, will you be using the paper rush for weaving chair seats, or something else? If you are doing seatweaving and a lot of it, it's more cost effective to buy the big spools. Frank's Cane & Rush, H. H. Perkins, The Caning Shop and several others carry the big spools. I can tell you what I do. Run the gourd under warm water for a few minutes (or hold under water in a bucket), the outer epidermis will soften and you can start scraping it off. I mostly use a potter's tool (bent metal - a round loop on one side and a squared loop on the other side). After the peeling, waxy layer is removed, let dry and sand with fine sandpaper if needed. Now I cut open the gourd. You may or may not have to clean the inside, just depends on the look you want. Sometimes the pulp is very smooth and attractive. I use the scraping tool again to clean the inside. You may want to dampen the pulp. ALWAYS wear a mask while working with gourd dust. Sometimes I use my dremel tool to finish cleaning the inside. You can use a variety of products to color a gourd, basketry dyes, acrylic paints, leather dye, etc. Experiment to see which you like best. Next time you dye reed, throw some gourd scrap in and see what they look like. I like leather dyes and the reed dyes. The first ones that come to my mind are Frank's Cane & Rush and H. H. Perkins, but others carry it too. Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 11:04:55 -0800 From: "Jill Choate" To: Read it with pictures: www.jchoatebasketry.com/dogtale.htm Traveling in style... If you've never experienced an Alaskan summer you'd be surprised to find out that it's warm and green here when it's hot, humid and sticky elsewhere in the nation. The views of the mountains are fantastic and the wildflowers burst forth in abundance. The fish in Alaska are huge and frantic to get on your line. Well, maybe it's the fishermen that are frantic around here but there is no doubt that an Alaskan summer is a frenzied affair with twenty-four hours of daylight to help fuel the gusto. Okay, so if it's such a wonderful place in the summer why do I leave? I haven't been able to convince the masses that they need to jump a flight and head for Alaska to take a class in antler basketry. This being the case the family packs it up and hauls it down the Alcan Highway every summer to offer classes. Five thousand miles of roads and some of the most picturesque scenery pass by and after six years we know it all by heart. We visit guilds, shops, and conventions offering workshops in antler basketry from coast to coast. Of course during our travels it's only the best accommodations for us...the best that my husband can come up with that is. From his point of view there is no time for needless time wasting. It is important to get on down the road if you're every going to make it to your destination. Therefore our accommodations while in transit take the form of the recline rest stop. Your turn at the recline rest stop occurs when you can no longer keep your eyes focused on the road after sixteen hours of driving. It is now time to pass on the responsibility of driving to the co-pilot who then takes over and resumes the forward momentum down the highway. The recline rest stop includes grabbing a pillow, levering your seat back a quarter of an inch and attempting to sleep as your head bobbles in time to the washboard ruts in the road. When you're really getting some good REM sleep your jaw drops and you begin to catch flies with your mouth wide open. This position is good for about four hours when your body tells you that it can no longer stand it and would rather drive than attempt to stay any longer at the recline rest stop. When this begins to be a bit too much and you feel the need to lie prone for a night it's time to roll out the red carpet. Fine accommodations can be instantly procured by throwing some cots up in the horse trailer. Never mind that smell leftover from transporting the last herd nothing is too good for the Choate clan. Just makes you anxious to get back on the road again to find out what my husband will come up with next. It will have to wait until next spring however when the "Game for Anything" Summer Tour 2004 will again roll forward from Alaska. If you'd like to hook up with us we'll be in Minnesota at the Headwaters Guild Workshop in Bemidji, in Iowa with the Tri Cities Guild in Davenport, at the Indiana Basket makers Convention in Indianapolis, IN, at Sievers on Washington Isle, in Wisconsin, at the Bluegrass Area Basket makers Seminar in Jabez, KY, at GH Productions in Scottsville, KY, in Rodney, MI at Deb Curries, at the Country Seat in Kempton, PA, at the Tennessee Convention in Knoxville, TN and our finale will be in Santa Fe, NM. Believe it or not there is still room for your group to get on board for next summer tour as well. For more information you can access our current schedule on the web at www.jchoatebasketry.com. Or drop us a line at: jill@jchoatebasketry.com. Until we meet on the trail... In response to my spouse's rather pointed hints, I have put together an inventory reduction sale, listing all the many very nice odds and ends of handles and hoops and some other things at reduced prices. If you are interested, e-mail me at rbemberg@kiski.net and I will send you the list. With the medical problems we have been facing, the shop area had to shrink. Thank you David for all the nice things you do for basket makers. A lot of people have responded to my computer breakdown and subsequent loss of mailing list for my newsletter. The result is that I now have around 200 people back on and feel like I am back in business again. I put a lot of effort into my newsletter, and had no one to mail it to. It has occurred to me that it would be easy to lift names and addresses from some lists I have or from your newsletter, but I won't do that. I only send to people whom I have had contact with or from people who ask to be on the list. There are a few exceptions, but I choose those exceptions carefully. Of course, anyone can access my newsletter from my website www.patriciabaskets.com. For Tammy: Spools of paper twist can be bought from Suzanne Moore's North Carolina Basket Works. Her number is 800-338-4972. Her prices are great, and you can "fiber rush" in 2 lb. spools, or approx. 35 lb. spools, which is the way I get it. To Dee: Thanks for the great comments on my Children's CD. I just received an order for one, and the person who ordered it probably read your comments. I would like you to know that you can print any of the patterns on the CD right from your computer just by right clicking your mouse, and then clicking on print. People who have bought the CD and commented on it really seem to like it, but it's an uphill battle trying to get anyone interested in teaching children to weave. For me, making children's patterns and creating the CD is my way of perpetuating and giving something back to the art of basket weaving. I am a chair weaver (bottomer) that has been book and self taught. I pick up every basket and chair book I can find, and it has helped. That has helped me through 7+ years. However, there are things that only another person can pass on. And that is my dilemma. I am looking for a master weaver. I live in Oklahoma, and I need to find someone that can refine my work, and teach me a few tricks. my main problem is that it cannot tie me up for more than a week at a time. I attend a local flea market at the fair grounds and cannot miss a weekend. I have been there over a year, and I get irate people if I miss a weekend. I am a nut that is actually working on furniture while seated on the floor. Since I live outside town, the flea is an easy location for current and future customers to find me. And I get a lot of passers-by to see as to what I am working on this weekend. And I have been getting some interesting pieces. A Victorian pram got a lot of attention several weeks ago. I have picture references of the last 6+ years. Got the camera a little later than I had hoped. And it has been the best investment. People like to see what I have done, and what material might look best on their furniture. And one book I highly recommend is Woven Worlds. I was able to acquire the book at the exhibit when it toured Philbrook in Tulsa. The pictures are accurate and show patterns that are used in Indian culture. I have used it as a reference when someone wants something different in a pattern that is unusual, unique, and natural at the same time. Indiana is lucky to see these baskets and I do recommend the exhibit. The book, if available, is worth it for basket collectors and Indian collectors alike. And I need to quit rambling. I have customers that want something that I currently cannot do, but maybe in the future, it will not be a problem. And I want to thank David. You have brought many people together that would not have an outlet otherwise. A forum for questions to get answered, and by people who know what the are doing. THANK YOU. Mary E. Abernethy %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: [weaverswords] "Weavers Words" V. 7 I. 04 Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 22:46:24 EDT From: EJLida2@aol.com To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com Thanks for all the great info. on Weavers' Words. What a great way to learn, exchange info, and meet wonderful weaving friends! I've found a terrific "widget" in Home Depot that keeps open coils of reed neatly coiled. I found them in the section where the bright orange heavy-duty extension cords are marketed. These "widgets" are adjustable plastic clamps, in the same fluorescent orange color. (They are meant to clamp extension cords.) There are three sizes, one will fit a full pound of reed, the smallest will hold a coil about 1" thick. They easily adjust to fit your coil and easily open to release the reed. I've purchased several and they last very well. The cost is about a dollar apiece.
