Uses only #3 and short pieces of 1/4". It is a great place to use up all those dyed scraps as well. You will need a drilled wood base (4" I think) and half round wood balls for feet. The pattern was from Farmers' Wives. http://www.locl.net/homes/farwives/index.html The above link will get you to the web site. I believe Karen Griffith is the author of the original pattern. I have seen many look alikes along the way but we like to try to find the original author of a design. Thanks for the compliments on our leather work. We are trying to make a quality product that will last and be here not only when you design your basket but when you actually have to teach it in a month or at a convention next year. Sorry it was late, but I hope it is worth waiting for. Some of the goodies it contains are: An article on selling in consignment shops, finding your personal weaving technique, a story on Tenerife baskets with lots of pictures, a free pattern for "Spider Webbing", lots of bargains on kits for sale left over from NC and Indiana conventions, A neat way to fasten coils of reed, and a way to fit a lasher into an area that is too tight. I need entries for the basket design contest I am holding. There is a very plain basket pattern on my "free pattern" page, and all you have to do is design something for the sides. It should be fun, and there is no entry fee, but small cash prizes will be awarded. The Split Rock Arts Program, which holds weeklong residential workshops in Northern Minnesota, still has some spots available for its basketry class being taught by Flo Hoppe in July. Workshop and registration details are below... The Art of Wicker Basketry July 13-19, 2003 Instructor: Flo Hoppe The Art of Wicker Basketry is for basket makers who would like to expand their knowledge of basketry techniques, develop their ability in shaping the three-dimensional form, and experiment with patterning and color. Participants will begin by exploring basic techniques for weaving bases, the sides of baskets, and several types of borders. Techniques for making handles and lids will also be presented. As participants sample various techniques, instructor Flo Hoppe will offer one-on-one guidance and help participants discover new ways to express their ideas. During the week, several small baskets will be woven in order to gain the skills necessary for making a final project of participants' choosing. For more information or to register, visit www.cce.umn.edu/splitrockarts, or call (612) 625-8100 This workshop may also be taken for University of Minnesota undergraduate or graduate credit. Flo Hoppe B.S., Iowa State University, began her career in 1971 after teaching herself basket making from a small booklet published in 1924. After studying techniques with many internationally recognized masters, she is now one of the leading experts in the fields of wicker and Japanese basketry. She has exhibited her work in numerous exhibitions, most recently "Contemporary Baskets 2001," del Mano Gallery, Los Angeles; "Contemporary Woven Constructions," Craft Alliance, St. Louis, Missouri; "American Basketmaking: Tradition & Innovation," Arrowmont, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and in a solo exhibition at Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute School of Art, Utica, New York. In addition, her work has been featured in numerous publications, including Handwoven, Fiberarts, Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot, Handmade, The Basketmaker, and Fiberarts Design Books II, IV, V, and VI. Her books, Wicker Basketry (Interweave Press, 1989) and Contemporary Wicker Basketry (Lark Books, 1996), are considered to be definitive guides to wicker basketry technique and design. The co-founder of the National Basketry Organization, Hoppe has taught workshops throughout the United States as well as in England, Canada, Japan, and Russia. She lives and works in Rome, New York. She is currently working with bead artist David Chatt on a book about single needle, right angle weave, a stitch that has become Chatt's signature stitch. The book is scheduled for publication in 2004. But do enjoy reading weaver's word. Do have take time to pass this on about children's basket patterns. Cynthia and anyone else who wants some "cool" patterns for kids, check out Pat Yunkers web site. I bought her CD " Basket Making for Children" at NCNC. I would recommend buying the CD and also buying the patterns to go with it, as I have tried printing them off the CD and you will spend more money with color printing. She has them at a reduced price for buying 12 or 24 at one time. She has a lot of the old favorite. Newspaper sit upons, god's eye with yarn, a neat Styrofoam cup one, dream weaver and many more. 24 in total with nice little historical tidbits. Her e-mail is patsbaskets@pennswoods.net. W., now I find my self asking for help. I am looking for a large cradle base (36" x 18") for babies. I know some bases are offered by suppliers but I need a different size than is offered, or is drilled with more holes. I think what I really need is to find a wood worker and I can't seem to find them on the Web. I am making cradles for my great grandchildren; I have a pattern but would like to find the bases. I am making a cradle now but I know it won't be large enough; six of my grandsons are over 6 foot. If any one could offer me information please e-mail me. Since I've finally taken the plunge and I've quit lurking I would like to praise a NorEsta product. I ordered their reed puller and it is the most important tool in my basket room, if you have wondered if it worked or not, it does.
