I'm hoping some of you can help me. I recently taught some women I work with to weave baskets and they are addicted big time, problem is our jobs are going away and they having to follow the work to Texas, Dallas/fort worth area. Does anyone have any information on guilds, shops etc in that area? I have tried to find some for them on line but with no luck. I have given them lists of mail order sources etc, and I'm putting together some kits to tide them over! Can anyone help? Mail order is great but doesn't replace the fun of having a shop or guild to work with. We have such a great shop here in St. Louis, St. Louis basket supply, run by Wendy Reary. I would like to find something like that for my friends; they are sooo excited about doing more weaving. Thanks, Michel Burkhart St. Louis, MO %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Mid Summer Weave Date: Tue, 22 Apr 2003 08:17:40 -0400 From: "Bonnie \(Easterbrooks\) Krist" To: Have you ever wanted to try your hand at gourds, beading, pine needles, or rush paper? Miller" To: davidc@iei.net To Lisa - who was visiting South Georgia: Having just returned from a wonderful Northeast Basketmakers Gathering in W. Springfield, Mass. (albeit contending with a last bit of winter snow/ice), I just saw your e-mail to Weaver's Word - don't know how long you are planning to be in Douglas. Our local Wiregrass Art Guild just finished last week a two-week art show and there were some baskets in that exhibit. Three of mine, and a couple from a wonderful older weaver (and now friend of mine since I have lived here for almost two years) named Libbo Belger who resides in Douglas also. Our Art Guild is having a "Gala Opening" of its Gallery in the Heritage Museum (old train station) on W. Ward Street -this Thursday, April 24th from 6-8 pm if you are still in Douglas. Please stop by. Would enjoy meeting you! Marilyn Miller Marilyn E. Thanks Sent: Wednesday, April 23, 2003 10:11 AM From: Patricia O. Jones To: david@iei.net David, Thanks for my last posting and this I hope will be my next to last for a while. Re: The list of mistakes from the Lyn Siler Book (Handmade Baskets). I want to be sure and clarify that I don't remember who posted the list. It might have been from an individual and I don't know if it was from the publisher or not... BUT... I have not had any problems with the few I have made from the book. I also have The Basket Book by Lyn Siler. Both books are well worth having in your library... I love the ribbed baskets and she has a lot of them included in The Basket Book. You get an awful lot of patterns from other authors as well... There is definitely a basket for everyone in each of these two books... I have talked to Lyn by computer and she knows of no list either. I don't want to imply that the book is full of mistakes. It is not... I have made several of the baskets and I need all the help I can get, so if there were mistakes in the ones I made I would have had problems. Just to be sure no one gets any wrong ideas about the books, they are well worth the prices and the baskets are all beautiful... Again, IF I should get hold of any kind of list (short), I will let it be known... Thanks... P. Jones %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: 2004 Convention Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 22:54:16 EDT From: AuntPattie@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Teacher applications for the 2004 Georgia Basketry Association's annual convention will be going out the first week or so in May. I had a fabulous time teaching at the NC convention in Raleigh in March! This was my first experience teaching at a large convention and I had a ball! All of the coordinators were fantastic - very helpful and friendly which made everything go smoothly for me. All of the students that took my class were so much fun - and they all did a fabulous job with their baskets! What a fantastic experience! Without mentioning each individual name, I want to thank everyone very much. As usual, I had a lot of fun at the vendor's booths - shipping home 7 big boxes full of purchases! After the convention I was lucky enough to spend 2 weeks with my very dear friend from Laurinburg, NC - Leigh Ingram. This woman is a very special friend in my life and I love her dearly. We met through Weaver's Words about 3 years ago and that casual meeting has developed into a friendship that I hold near and dear to my heart. Without Leigh and her very special husband, Andy, I could not have gotten all of my materials to the convention - they are both a godsend. Leigh made special arrangements for the two of us, along with another friend, Susan Evans, to take a personal class from Judy Mallow of Carthage, NC. For those of you who don't know - Judy is a renowned author and artist of pine needle basketry. She is also a fabulous teacher - very patient and very knowledgeable. Her studio setting is absolutely beautiful - I could have taken a nap for the whole afternoon under the trees in her yard and been perfectly happy. I came away from that class with a completed and adorable pine needle basket and a fantastic memory. Thank you Judy! Leigh and I then spent an afternoon gathering long leaf pine needles - and I shipped home almost 30 pounds worth!! Needless to say - I will be making more pine needle baskets. Thanks to everyone who makes the North Carolina convention such a success - I know that there are hundreds of people putting in thousands of hours who are never credited publicly with their work, but it is very much appreciated!!!
