I'm wondering if you've been receiving them. Please let me know if there is a problem. Attached is the latest one of them... Fun... Retreat. Time by yourself to rejuvenate the mind and the senses. A reprieve from the world so that you return to your responsibilities refreshed and energized. A time to fill your soul up with the wonder of the wilderness. A restful respite from the common place interruptions of everyday life and a time for reflection. Well, it sounds good in theory... My "retreat week" at the cabin began every morning at about 6:00 AM. Around that time the critters in the lot get restless letting me know morning chores need to begin. Hefting up two five -gallon buckets of dog water in each hand its time to perform the penguin shuffle. The penguin shuffle can only be performed correctly in bunny boots. Bunny boots are large, white, lead filled, leftovers from WWII that can be purchased at an Army Surplus Store or by some deviant who sells them out of a van along the side of the road in summer. It is important to assume the correct stance before attempting the penguin shuffle. First off, arms must be set at right angles to the ground. This is easily accomplished by adding on enough layers of clothing so that you resemble the Michelin man (or woman in our case). Next, we want to lengthen those arm sockets by adding some weight on the appendages. Grab a bucket in each hand. Now, moving side to side in waddle mode, propel yourself and your burden down the glaciated slope that leads to the dog lot remaining in an upright position. Please note that bunny boots should never leave contact with terra firma. To do so would likely incur the execution of a triple toe loop. Performing this maneuver does much to entertain the dogs but dosing the trail with water does nothing to enhance future executions of the above stated procedure. You have now had your first dance card filled with the penguin shuffle. Repeat above procedure as required for additional waterings and feedings during the day. Hooking up huskies is a combination weight lifting- wrestling match with young dogs. They are so excited to be picked for the morning run that is hard to maintain any sense of composure while being dressed in their harness. It is necessary for them to squiggle, yelp, jump, and scream louder than the guy next to him to let the musher know that she made the right selection in letting that particular pup go on this run. The vets of the dog lot look on patiently as they put up with the lack of good manners exhibited by the youngsters. The cacophony of frenzied huskies can barely be contained until the snub line is pulled. Similar to a bullet exploding from a gun, the team is launched out of the yard and down the trail with the musher in tow. "Crack the whip" in its true essence is experienced first hand. It is important to reiterate here that this is a "solo" week for me. No one is there to back up any "boo-boo's" made. Lose the team and it's a long walk home. Yelling "come" or "whoa" does not change a dog teams mind to race headlong down the trail without you. They just figure life just got a whole lot easier with the removal of a ton of cargo on the back end. Back to the dog lot after the completion of a run it's time for a "do-over" with the second set of enthusiasts. Jane Fonda has got nothing on Jill Choate's "Be a Buff Bush Broad" workout. First off let's get those biceps buff by utilizing some resistance. No need for an elastic band when the well pump handle serves the purpose. Let's fill five buckets for today's water requirements. It's important to keep your workout balanced so the lower extremities get a work out as well. Time to tackle the roof with waist deep snow that has been laced with an occasional drizzle or two to make it just about the same consistency of cement. Then of course the dog lot awaits its daily basic sanitary once over in the form of shovel and bucket. And of course at the end of the day the dogs are anxious for their evening meal to be prepared and distributed to all 30 members of the team. I've come to the conclusion that childbirth and dog mushing are a lot a like. At days end when you stagger up the hill you wonder why you would ever consider going through this all again tomorrow. And then you remember, oh yeah, it's fun. This years fun is almost about to expire. We have only a few weeks before we will have to say our good byes to Petersville and head out to the Lower-48 for this years summer tour. The schedule for this years tour and the tentative schedule for 2004 is now posted on the website at www.jchoatebasketry.com. If you'd like to get on board for next year give us a hoot and we'll get you included. Until We Meet On The Trail... Thanks, Donna ______________________________________________________________________ JUDY ZAFFORONI FUNDRAISER Dear Basketry Friends, Judy Zafforoni our friend and fellow artisan has been dealing with a very serious type of malignant brain tumor. She underwent surgery in Portland, OR on Jan. 15 and has been recovering at the homes of various friends. Judy is using natural medicines in the form of supplements and diet to combat her cancer, bolster her immune system, and encourage her full recovery. Her approach to the cancer has been truly done in "Judy style". She remains positive, grounded, and living her life with the usual passion, joy, and in-the-moment sparkle for which she is famous. Judy, however, is not able to work and is in need of financial assistance. Her supplements alone are several hundred dollars a month. The basketry community has established a fundraiser to help Judy with her expenses. The following basket artists have generously donated their work for this purpose. Beautiful art for a beautiful cause. Donna Carlson - mystery basket. Jan Hopkins - mystery basket. Kay H. Ames - Large lidded wicker urn, featuring a variety of textural weaves in Mother Natures colors: greens and browns. Mary Glade - birdhouse of natural materials. Andrew Grant - Nantucket lightship. This note is to let all potential teachers know that NCBA will be accepting baskets for jurying from May 5th through June 5th, 2003. The 2004 NCBA convention will be in Raleigh, NC on March 18-21, 2004. If you are interested in submitting your baskets for consideration but do not have a teacher application form, please email me privately ASAP so that I can get one off to you. The easiest way would be for me to send you an email with the application file attached... if you need me to mail you a hard copy, please let me know when you email me. If you know of someone who would be interested but doesn't have email access, please give me their name and address, and I'll get an application mailed to them right away. The teacher application that was included in the February 2003 Reeder's Report was unfortunately missing a page of important information. Sorry for any confusion that has caused anyone. If you have any other questions, just email me privately or give me a call (I'm listed in both NCBA and AMB membership booklets). Thank You! Barb Cordell Charlotte's W.E.B. I've been trying to locate teachers to send them the application for NCBA's 2004 Convention, but am finding that I have the wrong email address for some of these folks. If you are one, or know their current email address, please email me privately with the information. They are: Ann Evans Gilbert, Gail Hutchinson, Joanna Schanz, Peggie Wilcox Arends, Tressa Sularz, Ann McKane, Bonnie Roberson, Fran Steidel, Judy Moore, Karen Mitchell, Marilyn Wald, Susan Van Dyke, and Therrsa Hamm. Also, please contact me if you're a teacher and want an application. The next NCBA Reeder's Report will have a copy of the corrected application. Also, the ones that were available at the 2003 NCBA convention were correct. The only ones that were wrong we're the ones in the last Reeder's Report. Charlotte's W.E.B. (weavers of exceptional baskets! or so we hope) will be hosting the jurying this year. I'll be accepting basket delivery from May 5th through June 5th, with the jurying expected to take place the 2nd weekend of June. Again, this year the jurying will be done by representatives from all the North Carolina basket guilds. Thank You!
