We now have the scoop. It is a vase type basket with a 3 rod wale I believe. Great colors and workmanship. Elaine works at the Missouri School for the Blind and sent along 2 pins one for St. Patrick's Day and the other for Easter. The students at the School make them and sell them. They are great. It was good to have a swap again. Who else is ready for another one before summer hits? Diane Begeman %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Contact Bob Coker And This And That Date: Sun, 30 Mar 2003 21:23:05 -0800 Organization: Patricia Baskets From: "Patricia Yunkes" To: "David Collins" Dear David, For Ann Urso, who wanted to reach Bob Coker. Try reaching him through Gratiot Lake Basketry. They sell his very fine hand pounded black ash, and should know how to reach him. Their e-mail is glb@gratiotlakebasketry.com and web site is www.gratiotlakebasketry.com. I had a great time teaching and vending at the N.C. convention in Ralleigh. What a beautiful sight to see blossoms on trees and to hear the wonderful musical voices of the Southern Ladies there. Now that I'm home, I need to catch up on the things I should have done before I went to convention...namely my income tax and my newsletter, in that order. Hope to have it posted soon, and will let you know. Kindest Regards, Patricia Yunkes patsbaskets@pennswoods.net %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Cathy Smith Date: Tue, 01 Apr 2003 01:06:21 +0000 From: Lewiscarolv@att.net To: "David Collins" Cathy, I think you are referring to "Fanny Ribbon Basket" by Toni Lamm of Fayetteville, NC 910-867-8525. That is the address shown on the front of my pattern. I've had this pattern several years so can't guarantee if that is her current address but the pattern suppliers may still sell the pattern. Carol Votaw %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Hello Again Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 22:50:51 -0600 From: "Tony Stubblefield" To: "David Collins" Cindy - about 1/8" flat and flat oval reed - When I first started weaving back in the early 80's I used to be able to get 1/8" flat reed, but it was only available from a couple of places. Eventually 11/64" reed became available and I think that is what I was getting all along. Reed varies so much in width from bundle to bundle anyway as I am sure you have noticed that sometimes you can get "wide" 1/4" and sometime "narrow" 1/4" which is more like 3/16". For some of the classes I have taught where the basket needed to have a specific number of rows to measure a certain amount to use "wide" 3/16" or "narrow" 1/4". So, what I am trying to say is that "narrow" 11/64" should be fine for your pattern. Well, it seems like ages since I have written anything to WW. The questions and discussions aren't flying about as fast and furiously as they used to do. I guess everyone is as busy as I have been lately. As busy as I have been I haven't taught a class in almost a year. It sort of has been nice not to have to come up with new ideas and prepare all the materials, but I do miss the extra "basket" money that I would make. I may have to search for some new venues. I have been weaving though. I just joined a new local guild here in St. Louis and am very happy with the excuse to weave on a regular basis. The group meets once a month and though I haven't woven any of the "class" baskets yet I have been getting some of my "to do" list baskets going. My old group never did take me up on my offers to host a class, but after the second meeting of my new group they were rearranging their years schedule to include something by me. I now just have to figure out what I should specifically teach. A lot of the group hadn't done much with Nantucket's so that is what I think we are going to do. I am getting geared up for Martha Wetherbee's 2003 workshops I will be again hosting this June here in St. Louis. I have sent out letters to last year's participants as I always give them first chance at the new classes. They have until the end of this week to get their registration in and then I will be doing my "mass" mailing. I now have about 100 weavers on my mailing list so I am sure the classes will fill again this year without any trouble. I finally got the pictures up from last years workshops, so if you are interested here is the link http://www.jaskets.com/mw2002.html I should have the information up for the 2003 classes this coming week too if you are interested in what Martha has in store for us this year. I am also planning another trip to New Hampshire in August to take a class with Alice Ogden and to visit some of the shops and weavers out that way. I am very excited, as I haven't been back out that way in years. I already have my shopping list going and I am afraid I am going to have to take a loan out from the bank if it keeps growing like it is. For years I have been ordering from Brick House Basket Supply and I am really looking forward to visiting the shop in person. It is a good thing, or a bad thing depending on how you look at it, that I am driving out there as I suspect I will come home with a carload of stuff. Well, I had better wrap this up. I hope everyone is enjoying some springtime weather. We had some typical St. Louis weather this weekend when on Saturday it alternated between being sunny, rainy, sunny, snowy and then back to sunny all in a matter of a couple of hours. After it had snowed and the sun came back out the pavement was actually steaming. It was crazy; I kept expecting frogs to start falling from the sky. To Katie W. I don't know if this is what you are looking for. Two years ago I wove a "Large Baby Bassinet" pattern for my grandson. It had handles on each side. Was flat, flat oval, round reed combination. It was large enough that they used it until he could pull up and get out of it. They used it to tote him around the house and when they went out. Noresta has the pattern by Tina Ranthum on their web site. It is has a small hood, but does not give a lot of protection. If you go to noresta.com it is several pages down in the pattern listing, but they do have a graphic of the bassinet. Good Luck, PS I need some luck to, going into my second craft fair this coming weekend. I will go back to my lurking in the shadows. I'll be in a town called Douglas, which is somewhat near Pearson or Valdosta. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Things like Income Tax and the N.C. convention demanded much of my attention and took longer than I thought. I got right on the newsletter as soon as I could after convention, but there were so many new patterns and "things" I made for the convention that I had to add about 4 new pages to cover them all. This took lots and lots of time. Anyway, here it is and I hope you will appreciate these new things: Announcement of a Basket Design Contest - Earn yourself fame and a little money. 2 free patterns - one on a basket you can do as is or design a pattern for and very simple plaiting. New pages on Caning, Patterns, Kits and Sales. Including A buffalo to hold your caning pegs. New patterns for Easter style baskets. A Rug Beater. How to make a slider - for slipping reed against reed in tight places. Words of wisdom on repairing baskets. An amusing story - Quest for Native American dyes in Maine. Read And Enjoy... Kunz" To: David, I'm at a loss so I am turning to you for possible help. I am a basket maker who has worked in splint and reed for quite a few years. I recently took a class in willow basketry and am intrigued. I live in central Wisconsin, Zone 4, and have the property to attempt to grow some salix triandra. My problem is that I can't seem to find any American sources of cutting. I know that the time is short to get these cuttings in the ground. Can you tout me to any American nurseries that sell this product?
