I have 2 patterns that call for it and I've not been able to find it. Do you just cut 1/4 inch in half for the flat? What about the flat oval? I'm home! My time in Lincoln was busy and intense, mostly fulfilling, and sometimes frustrating. My sister-in-law is slowly improving and has gotten well enough that she no longer needs full time assistance. Now it's up to her to adjust to her new dietary requirements and continue her physical and occupational therapy to regain her strength and rebuild her muscles. My months away from home were not devoid of basketry. I made a series of wall pocket baskets for Linda to give as thank-you gifts to friends and fellow needlework guild members who had helped out in various ways during and after her long hospitalization. I think there were about 29 of them all together. Used up a lot of odds and ends of dyes reed and assorted ornamental additions. I was also able to work in teaching a couple of classes - one for the wall pocket taught at an SCA event, and another for a small twined bowl using a combination of round reed and natural roots and twigs taught at my brother's house. Maybe one of these days I'll catch up on the backlog of WW that I haven't read yet. Don't hold your breath though! Shirley Shipley - As a pattern author, I am delighted when teachers want to teach from my patterns. The usual approach to doing this is to buy a copy of the pattern for each student so they will have it for future reference. Although classes are sometimes taught without providing a pattern for each student, many students prefer to have a copy of the pattern. Do NOT buy yourself a pattern and then make copies from that for your students! That is a violation of copyright law and is not an ethical thing to do. When I found a free pattern on the Internet that I wanted to teach, I contacted the author and got her specific permission to provide copies of it (free of charge) to my students. My patterns are available at Pam Hancock - Although I am out of range for teaching at one of your guild's regular meeetings, I do sometimes travel to teach weekend workshops, or will schedule several classes on a trip if there are other groups in the area who want classes on adjacent days. These are not specific costs, but may give you an idea of things to consider when recruiting a guest instructor: 1. When teaching away from home, my first choice for lodging is to stay with one of the local weavers. My requirements are that it be in a smoke free home and that my sleeping area is cat free. I provide my own cot, if necessary. I sometimes stay in a motel if the host group prefers to pay for that. 2. My class costs include a pattern, materials, a teaching fee, and travel costs. This varies depending on time and distance, number of students, student skill levels, and the complexity of the basket. A class that would cost $25 locally, may cost $5 to $15 more out of town. 3. I provide materials for the classes I teach. If a group has collected and processed local materials, I would want to work with a sample of those materials ahead of time and adjust my teaching design accordingly. It may be more economical for the group to take a class making a basket with the teacher's reed and then adapt the basket they have learned to a collected materials version at a later date. Custom design work increases class costs. 4. If the group wanted to prepare their own kits from specified materials that could reduce the cost of a class. Took a road trip on Friday and want to report back that we had the best time! Anne, the owner is obsessed with basketry. She is a talented lady and the friendliest. She gave us plenty of ideas & helpful tips. There are lots of baskets on display and many are her own patterns. Her enthusiasm is delightful. When we arrived, there were a few weavers finishing up on baskets they had started in a class. We met Mary Ann, who says she almost lives there. She also knows about every quilt shop in the area. We had fun talking weaving with her too. Ann gave us directions to eating places and different antique and craft shops. Anyone in Wisconsin should make it a point to get to Middleton Basketry & Supplies. You'll have a ball!! Marlene %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Moses Basket Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 08:33:06 -0600 From: "Dan & Katie Wujek" To: I know this topic was discussed about 1-1/2 yrs ago, but after looking at the answers then, I believe I am still searching. I am looking for a pattern for a portable baby basket/bassinet type basket, or a Moses basket -- but I need one that is actually for a human baby [not dolls], has handles to make it portable, & is soft [flexible] enough for a baby to be comfy in!! I've seen the book by Sills, "Moses Basket", but it looks too formal & doesn't have handles & I'm not sure their made for humans. I've also seen the pattern "Moses (In the Bulrushes)" by Nye & Griffin, but that is too narrow & for dolls/decoration -- but it is more similar to what I am desiring. Basket-maker.com has a pattern called "Moses Basket/runners", but there's no picture nor description, so I have no real idea what it is a pattern for. Baskets of JOY has a "Moses Pattern", but is more of a market basket with a hard D handle. I've also seen a book called "Beds & Bassinets" by Ballard, but the clerk I talked to said he agreed, it looked like the baskets were for decoration, or dolls, not for real baby use. If anyone knows of a pattern for a REAL Moses basket -- PLEASE let me know where I can obtain one. If I don't find a pattern I'll probably try something on my own -- so I'll come back to y'all for ideas on exact materials I should use [i.e. seagrass, small reed, round reed, etc]. I'd appreciate any ideas anyway!! The baby's not due until late summer, so I have some time, but I would like to get started on the project, 'cuz summer zooms with bball, kids home, etc, etc. Peace & Joy To Everyone, Katie wujekd@putnam.k12.il.us %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Swap Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 09:55:06 -0500 From: drpain To: davidc@iei.net Hi Everyone, Just returned from a wonderful family trip in Ireland. I went back some time later to the shop where she displayed her work and she no longer traded there. I searched on the website and found her name connected with the weaverwords email list. It's kind of strange that archive list email will come up as the result of a search, but it did. So, I was wondering if you had contact with this individual and if you could ask permission to somehow get me in contact with her. I would love to see any new work she has done. Thanks any help you can offer. It was great to see old friends and make new ones. There were new vendors, and old ones. Seems there a lot of new supplies available. Teachers market place is always a big hit. The workshops were super, at least the ones I took. I had a chance to take a class with Cass Schorsch, and work with cedar bark. It was very nice using a new material and have the process of preparation explained. If any of you get a chance, sign up for this teacher! Also for those of you willing to rise early, try to catch Patti Hill, at 6:30AM on HGTV April 11th. She will be explaining and demonstrating her basket technique of working with paper to make her award winning spectacular baskets. It was nice to run into her and get this information. She says it is a rerun, but I never saw it and intend to be up watching. Also after twenty-five years of operating a fiber arts store, I lost my lease, and decided to close Weavers Emporium. A former student has opened a new basket store in the Melbourne Florida area, and I am pleased to announce that it is named Basket Emporium, phone # is 321 757 0825 and it is only a few miles from my old shop.
