I will be going there for 2 weeks in May and would like to visit some. Collins, Jr." Hi fellow basket makers. I am interested in teaching basket classes. My question is to authors of basket patterns. How would you feel about me teaching one of your baskets to a group of people? Is this a "basket ethical" thing to do? I would of course have purchased your pattern, and woven the basket enough to know what techniques to use. I would never consider doing this on a convention level. I would just be teaching local people some basics. I truly love basket making and respect authors and their patterns. I wouldn't want to step out of line, especially just starting. Thanks in advance. I thought I had signed up for the last swap but I did not receive the name of a swap buddy at either of my e-mail addresses. So I figured I had not sent the sign up info correctly or it had gotten lost. Today I got a nice basket in the mail from Susan Waite in Paris TN and I assume it is from the Weaver's Words swap. I sure don't want to be a deadbeat here and I don't remember who is hosting the swap. Please help! I have a basket ready to send as soon as I know where to send it. Thanks, Kathy Labbez Also: labbez@mindspring.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Tennessee Convention Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2003 08:54:03 -0500 From: "O'brian" To: To the person asking about the Tn. convention. Grandma has gusto. She called me up looking for an Alaskan adventure and asked to bring her eleven-year-old grand daughter with her. A practicum in lifestyle difference in the realm of "reaching" beyond your comfort zone was what she was looking for the two of them. Sixty-eight years young this woman is a tribute to a life well lived. At the end of the trail this is not an individual that will have any "would a, could a, should a's" to contend with. Instead of an epitaph she needs a T-shirt that states, "LIFE - been there, done that". Grit the grand daughter was a reserved peanut of a girl with a tinsel grin. She took to Alaska like a husky to harness. From sledding down hills, to running sled dogs, to revving up the snow machine she was up for everything we threw at her. Not to be outdone Grandma hooked up her own team of six dogs and blasted down the trail behind us. The experience of being a bush rat wouldn't be complete with out a turn at the end of shovel cleaning the dog lot. And of course the all time favorite chore of visiting guests; pumping water from the hand well for the day's quota of hauling water to the cabin. Showing people my back yard is one of the highlights in my life but teaching them to run a dog team is like sugar sprinkled on cobbler pie. Although we have many dogs at our place there is one that stands out amongst the rest. Satch, the coon hound. A displaced short haired, long eared, bawl mouthed, bother; Satch believes that he really doesn't need to lower himself to the standards of the rest of the team. He is proficient at the "poor me" puppy-dog look. This trademark demeanor embellished with pathetic shivering is adept at getting him access into the cabin and a parking place on the bed. Politely plopping his pounds onto a lap he awaits lights out so that he can creep into the crevasse created by two sleeping bodies and snuggle until dawn. Trying to keep Satch off the bed is not an option. Part mule and part kangaroo Satch knows where his bed is and that is not located on the cold floor. Try explaining to your guests that the bed warmer is not optional. Every outing has a finale and Satch was to be an integral part of this one. Little girls giggle. They especially do so when the lights go out for the evening. Trying to cram in every minute before the dawn of departure it is important for them to squeak and twitter until a threat of separation rears up from the throat of an annoyed adult. Accompanying this symphony of insomnia is a long eared dog making noises that resembled either drinking or regurgitating. After playing a quick game of "name that sound" it became apparent that something did not settle well with Satch. There's nothing like being woken up from a sound sleep to deal with the contents of a dog's sour stomach. By now the girl's twitters had developed into a cheering section in the loft. The chaos in the cabin had more of a football game frenzy to it than the restful respite that was planned. Jill's janitorial service was appropriated and several battering statements to Satch's character we're spewed while engaged in "other duties as assigned". I always claim that when guests leave our house they'll have "tales from trail" to share with their families and friends when they get home. Hopefully future endeavors will not entail stories that are embellished so well and quite so vivid. Catch up with us on the trail!! Believe it or not it's almost time to hit the road again. In April we will be making our way down to the Lower-48. We will be at the three-day basketry conference in Bemidji, MN then off to Rodney, MI, WI, St. Louis, MO, Bloomington, IL and then on to Pagosa Springs, CO on our way back to Alaska. It's a quick and dirty tour but we sure are hoping to see you along the trail. Until Then... I have custom made beaded bracelets that have sterling silver basket charms. I also have a great selection of other sterling silver basket jewelry. My business is just getting started but if other basket makers love the jewelry as much as I do, it should be a great success. My daughter is working on a web site so those who can't see the jewelry in person will have an opportunity to see what they're missing. Come by and see me at my table at Teacher's Marketplace. I will take orders if there's something you want that I don't have with me. Happy Weaving! Brenda B. At our last business meeting we thought of putting the call out there for information gathering only of what it would take to have a teacher in. Information we are looking for are: 1. Would the teacher stay with one of us or need a hotel/motel room for one or two nights? 2. What would the cost of the class be? (teacher's salary) 3. Would the teacher bring the supplies and what would that cost be 4. Or would the supplies be something that we could gather here? This is usually a one-night meeting from 6:30-9:30, we have all levels from beginner to expert but mostly beginners so we are still trying to have classes that teach new skills but we are self-lead. One person from the group teaches the basket and usually makes the kits as well so our only cost so far has been dues and we pay the teacher for the kit. If you could email me with some information I could present at our next business meeting.
