I have a basket but do not know what it is made of. I could be reed or it could be split bamboo. I would like to send a sample of the weaving material to you and have you tell me what it is. This may seem like an unusual request, but I assure you that I am desperate in my quest. I am sure there is an expert about this subject out there since you all sound quite knowledgeable. Jill - you should write a book. You have a captivating way with words. I have been to Alaska but it was in the summer time about 10 years ago. We were there for 3 weeks living in an RV. Would absolutely love to come back, it is beautiful. I think I would like to be there in the winter sometime. If you are near Versailles, Kentucky sometime let me know, I can always get a bunch of weavers together. I would like to announce the Kentucky River DreamWeavers Basket Guild Annual Spring Fling is April 4th and 5th. We have 10 different baskets being offered. Also we are having our first Nantucket Weekend on April 25, 26, 27. Kay and Fred Kohler are coming with their array of beautiful Nantucket baskets. Both weekends will be in Versailles, Kentucky, which is about 10 miles west of Lexington and 65 miles east of Louisville. Hope to see some of you at the Western Kentucky Basket Retreat at the end of the month. I have been very busy teaching classes and getting baskets made either for class or to sell. Along with that our new basket guild that formed in September is going strong with over 20 people belonging and we average 8-10 people per meeting. We have a great group of beginners to advanced weavers. One of our weavers is a Nantucket basket weaver and has offered to let members use her molds if they want to try their hand at Nantucket's. I am now carrying some materials out of necessity, as we have not basket supply shops nearby. I still haven't forgotten about wanting to have a mini convention here but I have not had time to really think about it yet so it. I may wait to be sure that I have enough weavers who will want to weave for a weekend. If anyone is planning on coming this direction in the next three months, I have my schedules out. If you would like to have one contact me at SEAlbrecht@aol.com and I can e-mail it to you in an Acrobat Reader file. Something I am planning on teaching hopefully in June will be a Raku basket. The student will first make their own pot and Raku it and then will weave the top. Should be fun! I have my pots made but need to Raku and then weave. I am working on another Raku pot that is quite large. The basket will be quite big when I finish it. It is a real challenge. Best close from Sunny Sedona! We have a few spaces remaining and are wondering if any basketmakers are looking for a supreme basketmaking experience. April 3 & 4 (Thursday & Friday) is a Nantucket Bread Basket 7"W X 12"L X 5.5" H with two heart handles and April 5 & 6 (Saturday & Sunday) is John's newest creation a Nantucket Salad Bowl 13" Dia--the agatized wood liner is the mold. Each is $235. If interested or you would like more information please contact me. The workshops will be held in Greenville, SC and there's a good possibility that some Guild members would be happy to open their homes to you for an overnight stay. I also want to mention that I have a couple of shave horses ready for the basket maker who wants to venture into carving rims, handles & skates for their baskets. It's so much sweeter to carve a handle to fit your basket than to build a basket to fit your purchased handle. If you wouldn't know where to begin IF you had a shave horse, I offer an intensive 2-day workshop in my home. Contact me for a flyer regarding the shave horse.
