They host great classes in Oriental, NC. I go there at least once a year to take a weekend workshop and it is about a 2,000 mile round trip for me, if that tells you anything about how good I think the classes are. They have great teachers come in, like JoAnn Kelly Catsos, Eric Taylor, Deanna Savoy and Martha Wetherbee. I went to out there just this past December to take a 3 day long workshop with JoAnn Kelly Catsos and made 4 beautiful baskets. I work in the evenings too, so tend to get more baskets made, but everybody competed at least 2 baskets. They are just getting ready to host a class with Eric Taylor so I don't know if registration is still open or not. Ann can be reached at annkudart@yahoo.com Oriental is on the water and is an incredibly quaint little town. The people there are so friendly and the food is just great. I have started bringing pies back with me from on the restaurants they are so good. I have not taken any classes at Arrowmont or John C Campbell, but I hear they are very nice. As I remember neither of them seem to have very good class catalogs, as I really want to see a photograph of the basket(s) that are going to be worked on. They definitely host some good instructors. Well after 6 months I finally have photos posted on my website of the 2002 Martha Wetherbee workshops I hosted here in St. Louis. It was kind of fun for me to go back and look at all the great baskets we made. Of course it makes me anxious for this years classes to get here. Hopefully Martha and I will have the dates and classes all worked out in the next few months and I will be able to announce all the details. Until then if you are interested in seeing what the workshop was like last year please visit http://www.jaskets.com/mw2002.html Hopefully one of these days I will get some new photos posted to my gallery pages. I just don't know where all the time goes. I kept thinking after the holidays that things would slow down, but they haven't yet! Hope everyone survived the holiday crush and is getting more settled in than I am. We are sold out of book #2. We still have copies of #1 and #3 (neither of which has a Christmas Cross Stitch - sorry). Does anyone know anything re: a weaver named Linda Carroll? A few nights ago, my daughter, who works at Borders Books and Music on Maui, took a phone order from a woman named Linda Carroll. She said she would send her "driver" over to pick it up. However, 20 minutes before the store closed, her daughter came in to pick the books up--and her daughter is Courtney Love. My daughter kept the store open an extra hour so Ms. Love could shop (and shop she did) and she told Bridget that her mom was a basket maker who sold patterns, etc. So, does anyone know what she weaves--and where she does it? Speaking of Borders (my all time favorite store--books ARE my life), I*ve applied for a part time position as a bookseller which means I*ll have to do less weaving and since I*ve been weaving for 13 years and teaching twice weekly classes for almost 10 years, it is about time to lay down the reed and the bone awl and move on. I*ll still be doing a few shows, but, to the joy of my family, I*m finally giving up weaving as a business. To be honest, I*ve grown tired. And I*ve found other things I want to do: beading, weaving without a loom, working with clay, woodworking and of course, painting...and there is never enough time for reading. Never. Hope everyone is well and having a safe winter. Please email me your name, address and phone number (need all the info to sign you up). We are going to do an exchange and only a few rules. Sign your basket and date the bottom 3. Send by ending date and contact your swap partner 4. CONTACT ME when you send the basket - Finished basket by March 15, 2003 FUN THINGS - I find fun and reasons I enjoy the swaps (don't have too, but it makes the swap fun) *Contact your swap partner and ask a few questions - makes the basket very special - and they can help with colors they like. *Include a few items from your area (I once received a post card of the governors mansion and just found the post card the other day while I was cleaning and it reminded me of the neat basket I received that swap) it lets people know what is special in your part of the country. Well, I don't have anything else. All I ask is everyone plays fair and has fun. I have always enjoyed the swaps and meeting the new people. Here are the dates to remember - sign up by February 15, 2003 (its about a month since we have only been getting WW every two weeks and I want to be able to include everyone that wants to) Finished date to have basket in their hands is: March 15, 2003. Okay... send your information to basketswap@hotmail.com and sign up today. OH... by the way... for every 10 weavers we get signing up for the swap I will put everyone's name in a drawing for a T-shirt or sweatshirt with a basket designed embroidered on it. So... last time we had about 65 sign up and 6 of you would have received a free shirt just for signing up. Jay Hagelberg %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Miniature Patterns Glitch Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 1:21 PM From: Patricia Yunkes To: Patricia Yunkes Dear Newsletter Reader, In the last newsletter, I asked for anyone who found a glitch in my web page to -mail me with the problem. One of you did, and it was a large enough boo boo that I wanted you all to know of the situation. When ordering a miniature pattern, all the patterns came up as something else. Sorry, there is so much to remember to do when adding to the web pages that I just forgot to change the names. I have remedied the situation and now anyone who wishes to order a miniature basket pattern may now do so by simply pressing a button. I also made it clearer that if you purchase the Hat with Baskets pattern for $8, you get the first 12 miniature basket patterns (which cost $24 separately) included. How's that for a bargain? Respectfully Yours, Patricia Yunkes PATRICIA BASKETS Visit my web page at www.patriciabaskets.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Reintroduction And Birchin' With Vladimir Yarish Sent: Saturday, January 25, 2003 1:49 PM From: Ann Harrow To: davidc@iei.net Hi Everyone, It's been about 3 years since I've posted to this group, and I can't even say that I've been lurking because all the WW's have just been saved unread. That's what happens when you start a house restoration project. The only baskets I've made in the last few years were at the occasional convention or when working with Vladimir. I did take a month off from plaster dust back in the spring of 01 to visit Russia along with Donna Carlson. We had a wonderful trip and got to visit the dangerous Russian forest to harvest birch bark. We were a bit early for the easiest harvesting, but it was an adventure, nonetheless. At present we are working on the schedule for Vladimir's spring visit which will be here before we know it. He will be at: Country Seat, March 6-8 Midwest Basketry Focus, March 12-16 NCBA, March 20-23 Woven Spirit, March 29-30 Weekend of April 4-6, probably class at the Lexington, MA, arts center Warner, NH, April 12-13 Anyone interested in classes can check with the shops/organizers for more information or contact me. As always, there is a vast supply of Russian birch bark here. If you haven't worked with the Russian stuff, let me say it is great. I'm looking forward to renewing acquaintances with many of you along the way. At NCBA I'll be "minding the store" for Vladimir, Sue Cooper, and Linda Sura, so do drop in to say hello and see what interesting things are available. Meanwhile, as much as I like to ski, think spring, not frigid weather. The furnace in this old house has been running nonstop for days just to maintain an inside temp of 64. Jill Choate's dogs would be comfortable here!! So Long, Ann Harrow ann@harrow.org 781-982-2436 Rockland, Mass %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% That's All For Now Folks.
