I wanted to get the photos of the baskets mentioned in the last Weavers Word: Christmas cross-stitch and Spring Curls. I went thru Yahoo and still couldn't get it. I am looking for ideas and advice on some basket classes. I have been researching basket classes/courses available this summer within a reasonable travel distance from my home (southwestern Virginia). I want to treat myself! Because I am a college professor, it is often hard for me to get away to attend basket events, except in summer. I am looking for more of an in-depth studio experience, learning about materials and techniques, rather then just instructions on how to make a specific basket following a pattern. I would consider myself an intermediate level weaver. I have looked at John C Campbell Folk School, Penland, and Arrowmont. I would like to hear from people who have attended one of these schools, or who would recommend another place. Thanks For Your Ideas And Help. Kathleen R. It is still new to me so don't through snowballs! I didn't even mind shoveling this time. I know, shoveling will get very old! I picked up a recent copy of FiberArts magazine. I didn't realize that they showcased basketry fairly often. Some beautiful pictures of work by John E. McGuire and Polly Adams Sutton. It was nice to have met Polly at Michigan Convention so that I could put a name and face together. I will have that opportunity with John McGuire in May at a workshop. I can't wait for that. I just recently got a friend hooked on waxed linen. Look out Kathy Halter, I have sent her your way! Joanne %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Questions Sent: Wednesday, January 01, 2003 10:32 PM From: Jan Putra To: David, Thanks for the work you do for the basket weaving community. Are there still basket weavers in Okinawa Japan? I have a basket weaving friend that will be near the Air Force base later in January and would like very much to hook up with them. Please email me at janp@tds.net and I will pass the information along. Could Brenda B Parker email me privately also? I am looking for the basket jewelry you had mentioned some time back. Thanks, Jan Putra in SE Wisconsin The holidays-glad to see them come, glad to see them go! %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: John McGuire Workshop Date: Fri, 3 Jan 2003 14:23:13 EST From: Acre8shun@aol.com To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Hi Basketmakers: The Upper South Carolina Basketmakers Guild is hosting two back-to-back workshops in April '03 taught by John McGuire. We have a few spaces remaining and are wondering if any basketmakers are looking for a supreme basket making experience. April 3 & 4 (Thursday & Friday) is a Nantucket Bread Basket 7"W X 12"L X 5.5"H with two heart handles and April 5 & 6 (Saturday & Sunday) is John's newest creation a Nantucket Salad Bowl 13" Dia--the agatized wood liner is the mold. Each is $235. If interested or you would like more information please contact me. The workshops will be held in Greenville, SC and there's a good possibility that some Guild members would be happy to open their homes to you for an overnight stay. I also want to mention that I have a couple of shave horses ready for the basket maker who wants to venture into carving rims, handles & skates for their baskets. It's so much sweeter than building a basket to fit your purchased handle. If you wouldn't know where to begin IF you had a shave horse, I offer an intensive 2-day workshop in my home. Contact me for a flyer regarding the shave horse. Bye For Now And God Bless, Elaine Robson acre8shun@aol.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Change Of Address For Wicker Woman Sent: Monday, January 06, 2003 8:36 AM From: Wickrwoman@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi Everyone! This will probably be one of the last times I write to you using my old address of Wickrwoman@aol.com, with AOL as my server. In just a few days to a few weeks, I will be severing my ties with them after five very happy years of service, because we have gone to using a satellite system, which is its own ISP. The combined costs far outweigh my staying with AOL any longer than necessary. Please change all your address books and if you have me listed on your website, or guild rosters, please change all those addresses, too. As most of you from this list already know, in August I sold my building in Zumbro Falls, MN and have relocated to Angora, which is 300 miles north, near the Canadian border. I am no longer providing wicker restoration and seat weaving for hire, but continue to teach nationwide, write about my crafts and create my deer antler basketry for classes, competition, exhibition and commission. You can read all about the changes and things currently on my plate, on my domain website at www.wickerwoman.com. Contact information is listed below in my signature file. I will keep you posted through guild newsletters, my website, and occasionally here on Weaver's Words and Susi Nuss' Basketmaker forum and through my ezine/newsletter on Yahoo! Groups, WICKER WOMAN'S WEAVINGS. Thanks so much, happy weaving! Wishing you all the best in the coming year. Now maybe this doesn't mean as much to those of you in sunny Florida or California, but to us here in the northwest mountains of Pennsylvania, it is wonderful. The fact is that I can see blue sky and sunshine. I have to tell you that it has been almost a month since I have seen the sun here. Hallelujah! Of course the other thing I am happy about is that the Newsletter is finally posted, and to support it, there have been more changes in the web site. I am trying to learn how to handle the new format, and learning is fun. It can also be frustrating, as when it is all ready to upload to the net, and it simply won't. It took a whole day to figure out that I had used up all my server space and I had to buy more. But it is basically done now, and you can view it at www.patriciabaskets.com. I still have to make a few links and buttons, and I have to admit I don't know how, but my computer person is coming Monday, and will teach me how to do this. You should be able to find everything you want to see. If you have a problem, e-mail me and I will rectify the problem. What's new in this newsletter? Pictures and stories about river cane baskets. A free pattern on how to do an Indian matchstick rim and a free technique on splitting spokes for continuous weaving. There is an article on teaching as a source of income for basket makers. The kits of the month are heart baskets, one with a handle, and one with a laced rim, and a toilet tank caddy, a simple basket with 2 woven compartments. And the crowning glory is a whole new series of pages on miniature baskets, 15 new baskets. Read, and enjoy. Sent: Sunday, January 19, 2003 6:11 PM From: Cathryn Peters To: Collins, David Hello David And Everyone! I haven't written in a while and might have fallen off the newsletter list, because of my change in email addresses, but wanted to make sure everyone knows that I am no longer living in my Zumbro Falls, MN studio. We have relocated to northern Minnesota near Cook, which is not too far from International Falls and the Canadian border (75 miles south, to be exact.) Anywho... we have also switched Internet Service Providers and are now on satellite. Between the combined costs of satellite with AOL, the computer costs each month are killing me, so I'm dropping AOL after five years of faithful service. I will however, keep the Wickrwoman screen name for the AOL Instant Message (AIM) feature that is offered free to people that are not AOL members. Please everyone, change your newsletter addresses, guild membership lists, and email address books, to read: cathryn@wickerwoman.com Scrap all references to Wickrwoman@aol.com, because in just a few days it will no longer be valid. I will not send mail from that address, nor receive it anymore. My domain website address is still the same at http://www.wickerwoman.com, but my email, snail mail and phone number have all changed. Everything is correctly listed in my signature file below. Oh, and just so you all know this in advance, I DO NOT SEND SP*M or viruses, and always let the recipient know ahead of time if I am sending any photos for download in email attachments. So if you ever receive something that looks like it's from me, but you have not gotten notice from me that it's coming, DELETE it immediately. It's probably a hacker, virus, worm or Trojan. And I always, always, always, sign my emails with my signature file. Then too, I'm always very specific in my Subject lines, so you know what the email is about. Please don't be fooled by imposters! By the way, if you go to the Homepage of my website, and my What's New page, you will see a time and temperature banner.
