I'm in several guilds and we are desperately trying to find clarification on this topic. It's been hard to find anything concrete. Would you please email me directly or to Weavers Words as to the person who gave the talk or to people who would be willing to share the information? What an important topic... Thanks for mentioning it. One is a "Doorknob Music Box", one "Seasoned Greetings" is made to fit the quart layered cookie or soup mix gifts, and one" Romeo, Romeo..." has a blank panel for painting. Baskets are pictured on our website at www.basketclass.com. The doorknob music box has been a favorite of many. We would love to have you take a look. The sparkly effect comes from a glitter spray that I found in the floral department of a craft store. It would be nice on woven tree ornaments too. It dried quickly and was good over oil base stain and also on matte acrylic spray. Happy Holidays. I noticed you're from Indy (I am too) I am just getting into basket making and was wondering if there was a local guild or way of seeing basket class schedules in this area. I heard from someone there might be a class at Lilly? My mom belongs to a guild in Columbus but that is too far for me liking on the NW side. Thanks For Your Input! Sent: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 12:09 PM From: Jill Choate To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Live from Fairbanks! (well sort of) If you can't make it to interior Alaska for the premier showing of "Gifts from the Forest" you can always check it out online at www.jchoatebasketry.com. The new stuff has finally emerged from the "absent" cold, "absent" snow and dark of Talkeetna to highlight the walls and pedestals of the Bear Gallery. Pick out that one-of-a-kind Christmas present and tell them at the Fairbanks Arts Association to have Santa airlift it your way. They have connections as North Pole, AK is just up the street. What's with the weather? I understand that you guys are getting all our snow! It's so balmy in Talkeetna that they did the infamous "Wilderness Woman's Contest" in hip waders instead of snowshoes. People are sending me photos of snow in North Carolina?! Daily dog chores here have taken on serious proportions. A new Alaskan adventure game (Catching Air) has evolved from trying to maneuver around the ice rink we call the dog lot. Points are given as follows: how many times did she kiss the ground before getting back to the house? What creative positions did she crawl into to get from one dog to the next? Upon landing did she have the ability to keep the dog food in the bucket or will one lucky dog win the jackpot today? If she did lose it was it a shooter (rockets out at an angle at the nearest dog), an eruption (bucket slams into the ground and the contents shoot upward similar to a volcano) , or a sprawl (both bucket contents and handler merge and slide to nearest dog) . Points are taken off if you lose your temper however, finding the humor in the situation doubles your points. To navigate your course you must follow the following rules. Traction is a good thing. Look for grassy spots, stay away from rain glazed sticks. They look stable but are a good take off for an airborne. Stepping in dog "doo" is also a good thing, (shoe removal at the house is now a mandated operation). Make it through the dog lot in an upright position without the assistance of cleated shoe wear and you win! So you can see our dilemma here. We live in Alaska because there is snow and through no fault of your own you have swiped it from us. A green Christmas in Alaska is just not a pleasant thought. So we have three words for you snow bound folks.....SEND IT BACK! Meeting up with us on the Basketry Trail this summer is still an option. For more information check out www.jchoatebasketry.com/classes.htm. Until The White Stuff Heads North. Come and have a look: http://www.ncbasketmakers.com. New photos from Seminars East and West and the Goldweavers' Harvest Workshop, as well as a very interesting piece of news (and photo) from Pattie Bagley. A new pattern from Kay Harriger for a neat basket will be coming soon, so check back often. The Triangle Basket Weavers survived the ice storm and accompanying power outages, some more gracefully than others. Our annual holiday "do" was canceled because Cyndy McDonald, the one on whom we rely to jumpstart the holidays, was short on electricity and long on coughs and sniffles. As of this writing, all members -- even Paula Carson in Durham -- are back in line and on-line. Someone forgot to remind The Great Weather Maker that this is North Carolina, not Michigan! Best wishes to all you basket makers and your families for a wonderful holiday season and an extra special wish for you, David, for all you do for us.
