We are looking for a variety of 2 hour, 4 hour, and 6-8 hour all day classes. The cost of the basket/project class should reflect the cost of materials, kit preparation, mold or tool rental, pattern and teacher's fee. We request one form, pattern and colored photograph (not a jpeg image) for each proposed basket/project. This year's attendance will be limited to 48 weavers - a Teacher's Marketplace is being planned. The deadline for submitting proposals is January 13, 2003. Baskets/projects will be reviewed and selected by the MSW committee by January 31, 2003. If you would like a Teacher Proposal Form, please contact Bonnie Easterbrooks, Teacher Liaison @ evergree@erinet.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Retayne vs. Synthropol Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 15:57:13 -0500 From: "Pamela Zimmerman" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com Retayne vs. Synthropol - sorry, I have not kept up as I would have liked to, but I do not remember seeing a response to this question. I don't even remember who asked it, so hope she sees my response! Synthrapol is not the same thing as retayne at all. Retayne keeps the dyes from bleeding, synthorpol is a detergent. Synthrapol is used to wash the fiber, which is to be dyed, which is supposed to remove oils (even difficult ones), and prepare for dying. (I have used it for fabric, never for weaving materials...I assume it would work, but it does foam up very high. I only used a single capful - maybe 1.5 tsp - in a washer load.) Retayne is used in wash loads to keep the dyes from bleeding from one fabric to another, or, for instance, when you have a quilt you have never washed, and fear the dyes will bleed onto a white section. It also could be used in rinses, following dying. I have only used this product on fabrics, as well. My source for these chemicals, and almost anything else I use for dying is Dharma Trading Company: http://www.dharmatrading.com/index.html Here is the page with both retayne and synthrapol on it: http://www.dharmatrading.com/other_ingredients.html Pamela Zimmerman Come to The Pine Needle Group: http://clik.to/pineneedle %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Router Bit Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 17:50:02 -0000 From: "The Johnsons" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Could anyone tell me the type of router bit that is used on bases? And Wisconsin Sent: Wednesday, November 13, 2002 10:26 AM From: Jill Woods To: davidc@iei.net Hello All, Well I just had a really fun two weekends. First I attended East Troy Basketry's weaving weekend. Just Took Catherine Peter's natural rush footstool class using bullrushes. We twisted our bullrushes into a traditional rush seating pattern on a footstool. This is a very old method that Catherine does an excellent job of teaching. Glad to see some very old traditions kept alive. I can now offer this to my own chair seating restoration customers. Thank you Catherine for that wonderful class, (and yes my bullrushes that I purchased from you made it home just fine and dried out nicely.) Then the following weekend, (just got home yesterday) I accompanied the NorEsta to the Minnesota Basket Guilds event in Minneapolis. This was our first time vending at that event and I think we made some great friends there. I hope to be returning next year. I was fortunate enough to get in on one of Jo Campbell/Amsler's willow basket classes there. To the ladies who helped us out, Thanks so much for all of your help with our set up and packing up. You are all just super! I am so glad to have had time to participate in some workshops this last year. I hate the "too busy" statement that prevents me from being able to just attend and enjoy classes more often. Now it's time to weave weave weave. With Christmas just around the corner, I have all of my guild and club swaps to make and am hoping (may be nuts) that WW will start a swap soon. Later all, Jill W. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: A Few Of My Favorite Things. It's snowing in Talkeetna! After rain, floods and earthquakes winter has finally arrived. Sounds like a nice reprieve doesn't it? There's always some adventure happening in Alaska. Around the Choate Dog Ranch North the news is that the pups have made the move to being adults. They are currently being put in harness and taken on walks. There first attempts at "dressing" were pretty squirmy but there getting the hang of it now and love running with the big dogs. Next step, hooking them in a team but until we get some more cushioning in the form of snow that will wait a bit. Thought I'd say so up front so that those of you who wish may scroll on down. I was wondering if any of you who are familiar with Rit Dyes might be able to help me. I have 2, armless, Parsons style upholstered chairs. They have a woven chevron pattern and are in light mauve. They are clean and fresh, no stains on them. The color no longer fits my decorating scheme and I wish they were dark, hunter green. Is it possible to dye them? Can you dip a sponge in the dye and blot it on???? Has anyone ever done this? Of course I would try it on the underside first, but just wondered if any of you could give me any advice. If you don't want to take up space on the weaver's words with an answer please email me at: jayna33@msn.com Thanks So Much, Jayna in central Massachusetts where we are in the second day of an ice storm. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: I've Returned Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2002 12:02 AM From: Darleena J To: Hello Fellow Weavers!! It's been a long haul but I've made it back. I've moved from the Azores Portugal to the east coast of Florida. I have a great job and we're renting a nice house on the water. My 3 boys and I have been starting a new way of life since my husband decided to take his leave after 21 yrs. There is so much more laughter and joy in our home these days. I haven't been doing many of my hobbies in the last two years but I'm now ready to begin again. I have a room to myself (the oldest DS moved out) for all of my paraphernalia and it's almost set up. I'm working in a youth center, which is what I did in Portugal, and I'm teaching the children all of the things that I haven't had time to do at home...even basket weaving. It's good to be back. I saw a few familiar "faces" while I was reviewing earlier issues. Hey to David, Lois, Lynda, Donna, Norma... and I know I missed some! Darleena %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: IBA And Stuff Sent: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 9:32 AM From: Babs kasper To: Janet, I have to agree with you about IBA's convention book. I have never heard of some of those teachers. I was even more surprised at who is not teaching next year. Even so, there are a couple of classes that I wouldn't mind taking. I talked to Jim about my going but he wasn't to receptive. He reminded me that it would cost me $110 just to sign up for classes. (Membership fee + late fee + registration fee.) Plus I could only take classes on Friday and Saturday since we have to be at his mother's on that Sunday. So it looks like you will be going without me again. I read through your LAST LASH before I went to bed last night. Didn't take long. Not much in it. Did you notice that the Board Meeting minutes were from 6 months ago and the Financial report was just about as old? Did you understand that thing about forfeiture of hotel contracts? It sounds like they think that they may have to default on some contracts. Wonder what that is all about? You know Janet, you really ought to run for an IBA office. You do such a good job at keeping our little group together and organized. They could really use your talents. I had better get back to work before someone catches on to what I am doing. You really ought to contact someone on the IBA Board and let them know that your are interested in running for office. Go For it, we are all behind you.
