Neither Mark or I posted this message. Our email address is mkoch@iei.net. The first paragraph is accurate and we hope you are careful when torching your baskets. However we would never post the second paragraph that was obviously just a portion of the original post. We would never post a notice asking you to please use our product. We feel this is part of the Klez virus that is going around and recommend that many of you secure the fix tool to purge the virus from your system. The W32 Klez virus will sneak past Norton and remain undetected by the Norton screening and pull information from your address book and use portions of information in your computer and send it our periodically. Please go to Nortons website and find the fix tool and that should take care of this problem. Unfortunately the W32 Klez virus entered our system and was undetected by the Klez virus and has been using part of our email address and portions of information from our computer ever since. There is much that can be done about it. But getting rid of it on your system is important. I heard from Sally at Gifts of Love in West Bend, WI, and made a special trip to see her things as she is only about 50 miles away. She has very nice items. I was really happy to hear from her. I know she sells mail order and she was very easy to work with. I am glad to know about her. I went searching and found the pattern. It is called the OJIBWA SEWING BASKET by Elda Nye and Jeri Griffin the address on the pattern is: The Woodshed Gift Shop Les Cheneaux Islands Cedarville, MI 49719 906-484-3002 The lid is 12" x 17" but you could use the technique to make any size. The lid was attached with seagrass. If you need thin leather lacing you can get some of that from us. We also make woven leather buttons, email us for details. Probably your best bet for instructions that cover a variety of styles is "Splint Woven Basketry" by Robin Taylor Daugherty. This book is a great "primer" for any basket woven primarily of flat (splint) material. Most any basket supply store or even Barns & Noble should carry it. Another update - The website that used some of my photos has updated their pages with the graphics I provided them. I received a note from them about a week or so after my last posting here on WW that the update was complete. Well, it is really starting to look like Fall around here. I am starting to get into the mood to weave again. It always seems like I have so much going on in the Summer to find time to get much weaving done. Now that I spend more time inside I should get back to finishing up some of my projects from last Winter. I've added more pictures to almost every page and have a very extensive listing of basketry information sites, classes, workshops, guilds, art galleries, publications and individual artists all listed on the Great Links page. Then there are individual topic pages that link from the main page. http://www.wickerwoman.com/links.html You're sure to find answers to just about all your questions on wicker repair and seat weaving on this page. http://www.wickerwoman.com/wickerfaq.html And for you guild newsletter editors, if you need copy for your next issue, sign up for my Wicker Woman's Weavings free, monthly ezine/newsletter to pull information from. You and your family will be in my prayers for strength and peace at this difficult time. It was my birthday yesterday and like every year, my sweet Mom calls and not only sings "Happy Birthday" but also a second verse of "May God Bless You," It is really silly and it embarrasses my kids when she does it to them but tears filled my eyes this year when I heard her, wondering how many more of my birthdays will I get this precious serenade? God be with you Dollie. Nancy in Glen Arm: You asked about baskets used in the 1700-1800 years. I know this is probably not what you had in mind, but if you like antiques, you may be interested in the Antique Series of basket patterns which are found in Group 5 in the patterns and kit section of Cornerstone Basket's web site. www.SharonKlusmann.com In Him Who Is Our Cornerstone, Sharon Klusmann Cornerstone Baskets www.SharonKlusmann.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: [weaverswords] "Weavers Words" V. 6 I. 19 & 20 Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2002 18:46:05 -0500 From: "Roberta Comstock" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com "Weavers Words" Vol. 6 Iss. 19 Lynn M. & other Madison Area Basket Weavers - Congratulations on the success of your guild! Barb -- So. MO - I don't know off hand of a specific pattern foe a basket made entirely of seagrass (the corded type). We made one at our October guild meeting that has flat stakes with the sides twined of dyed seagrass and round reed. It's a very attractive effect, and not as hard on my fingers as working with seagrass only. I have also seen some excellent rib baskets woven with seagrass. A basket made entirely of sea grass will not have as firm/rigid a body as one with reed (or other) stakes/spokes/ribs. It would probably resemble some of the twined sisal basket bags from Africa that are such wonderful totes. They are flexible, but have enough body to stay open when placed on a flat surface. Start your base with two groups of three or four spokes crossing each other. Twine around pairs of spokes for a round or two, then around single spokes. To increase the diameter, add extra spokes by folding the new spoke piece in the center, laying it behind an existing spoke as a "V", and twining around one arm of the "V" then the existing spoke then the other arm of the "V". The number and placement of these increases can be calculated to control the spread and shaping of the basket. You could also try using a simple pattern for twined round reed or waxed linen, adding length to the pieces to allow for the much larger size of the sea grass. Have fun! Chrystal L. Higgins - If you must have an exact width that is unavailable commercially, you could buy loose seagrass (available from Royalwood, for one) and braid it yourself. Allow plenty of time! I'd probably adjust my project to use a different size of seagrass braid or substitute some other braided material (such as straw) that might be found in the correct width. Who among the Weavers Words readers went to the NBO Conference in New Mexico in August? I didn't get to go this time and am eager for some reports. Haven't been to an organized out-of-town basketry event since January & am having severe withdrawal symptoms! Keep those convention reports comin, please! "Weavers Words" Vol. 6 Iss. 20 Nancy in Glen Arm, MD - For baskets of the Rev War period, check out art work of that time frame for pictures of baskets and visit some of the nearby historical museums in your area. They may actually have some period examples on display! If you can find a recreationist group, see if any of its members have looked into historic basketry. You can also check contemporary European sources of that era, because immigrants may have brought baskets or basketry knowledge with them from the old country. There may also have been imported baskets in use in this country. Well, everyone, my Sister-in-law is Finally coming home from the hospital tomorrow (after nearly 8 months) and I'm off to Lincoln, NE to take care of her until she gets back on her feet. Don't know how long I'll be there, but have made arrangements to retrieve my email on her computer. Will try to keep in touch. Anyone in that area who wants to get together to weave in the next month or two can send personal email to me or call my brother's house between 9 am and 9 pm (402-464-9512). For now, the only projects I'm taking are waxed linen. Maybe I'll have time to get some holiday gifts made? Weave Well. You can spray the outside of a basket that has dyed reed with at UV protectant spray from a home supply store to keep it from fading. My source was very reliable. Anyone had any experience with this?
