It had an exhibit on 2 Native American Basket weavers and was well worth the visit. Thanks to Sue from Rochester Vermont for the information. I greatly appreciated it. Colors are just starting to change in Southwestern Michigan. Have you tried Frank's Cane and Rush? My catalog shows the width they sell at 0.8-1.0 cm (about 3/8-1/2"). Don't know if this is too large. You could probably request it closer to 1/2". I have ordered from these people and they are very accommodating. It comes in one-pound coils of about 135 feet for $6.00/coil. $4.00/coil if you buy ten or more coils. (Check out page 12 of their catalog at www.franksupply.com.) He told me that the formulations were exactly the same, he just has different colors made up for weaving baskets. So if Basket Tree dye is a fiber reactive dye then I guess Rit would be also. I have had very little trouble with Rit dye but also have experimented with other brands. Rit is easily available here and I know the results I will get with colors. Like anything dyed it will fade if not taken care of properly. I do use an intense dye bath, two or three boxes of dye to get vibrant colors. The directions say that for a pound of materials, use one a gallon of water and one box of dye. Well a gallon of water doesn't hold much reed and I usually dye more than a pound of reed at a time, hence more dye in the dye bath to compensate for more water and more reed. Just thought I would share my thoughts on dyeing reed. I am looking forward to seeing some old pals. Anything to get away from Moving appointments! Kate Conroy - thanks so much for sending my the North East application. As soon as I get an address I will send in my paper. It will be nice to be a member and be able to attend things in your neck of the woods. I will probably be spending a good amount of time in Massachusetts this next year. Pattie B - I saw Spider Dude's #26 and #27 issues at Borders Books. I always get excited when I find a comic. Did you ever get monopoly? To the weaver looking for 1/2 inch braided seagrass. Have you checked with Gratiot Lakes? I know Carol has flat braided and I have also gotten braided seagrass from Suzanne Moore in North Carolina but I think mine might have been 3/8. Mary Kuhr - I have a great picture of us from NC last year. I have all the copies put aside to send to Pattie. I just have to get them in the mail. Are you going to Michigan convention? I could bring it to you there. Let me know! It is a very good picture of groveling at it's finest! How can I go about selling this class to someone who would love to have the chance to take the class? I have seen classes for sale on the bulletin board at the convention center. Is that the only way to do it? Can I advertise it here on WW to someone attending the convention but doesn't have a Saturday class? I am sad to not be able to attend myself, but would be even sadder if my seat went empty. Thanks, Tammy in Michigan %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Antique Baskets Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 12:48:03 EDT From: EHBrandt101@aol.com To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Hello Weavers, I am interested in any basket shapes, styles that would have been used in the Rev War or the 1700-1800 years. A customer asked if I could make a rectangular basket with a woven lid. Can anyone tell me where I can find directions to make a woven lid that will be rectangular and NOT make with round reed spokes? I can't remember ever seeing anything like that in my ton of patterns or on the net. Thanks For Any Help, Dot in rainy, definitely fall feeling, Maine %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Jewelry Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 7:23 PM From: jparker To: davidc@iei.net I rarely post anything on weaver's words but thought some of the female readers might be like me in there desire to have jewelry with baskets. I have been making beaded jewelry that incorporate my love of baskets. I got into this jewelry business after the last North Carolina Basket Maker's Convention after seeing a bracelet that I wanted that was a raffle prize but not available for purchase. I took a jewelry class and the rest is history. I have plans to establish website but it's still in the planning stages. I do bracelets, necklaces, and watches. The great thing about the jewelry is it is custom done to suit your personal request. I have the ability to vary the size of the bracelet, necklace or watch, color of beads and number of basket charms per item to suit you and your price range. My jewelry features sterling silver charms, glass beads and silver beads. The items close with a toggle clasp. I am teaching at the North Carolina Basket Makers Convention in Raleigh in March 2003 and will be vending at "Teachers' Marketplace" during the convention. The price range begins at $25 for a bracelet. If anyone is interested in knowing more, you can e-mail me privately. Thanks for letting me share my new passion & hobby that is almost as much fun as weaving baskets. Happy Weaving, Brenda B.
