Next week I'm heading to Phoenix, Arizona and was wondering if there are any basket supply stores that are out that way? Also wanted to mention that 2 years ago this month the Madison Area Basket Weaver's Guild was started here in Madison, Wisconsin. I am very happy to report that we've continued to grow to over 45 members! Thank you to all of you that helped us learn how to start a guild...your advice and support was greatly appreciated. I stayed away from that because I didn't have a cookstove in my basement and didn't want to take the chance of spilling in my new kitchen. I use very hot tap water, dissolve the dye in 2 cups of boiling water, add a plop of salt, the dye and wet reed. I watch it and when it's the color I want I remove it. I have also done another batch in the "cooler" dye bath, and just leave it in a bit longer. I rinse in warm water first then in cold with a couple glups of vinegar. Very little bleed, and very vibrant colors. Jan, in Cedar Hill, MO %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Cradle Website Date: Tue, 01 Oct 2002 21:44:23 -0400 From: "Ruthanne M.S. Higgins To: I am hoping that someone can help me. I am in desperate need of finding a supplier for 1/2" three-ply braided seagrass. (Looks like a hair braid) I have no trouble finding the 3/8" three-ply, as well as the 5/8" and 7/8" flat braided seagrass. I purchased about 10 pounds last year at a basket retreat but when I returned this year, the woman selling supplies could not remember where she had bought it. I have checked with numerous suppliers but without much luck. One supplier does have it in 32 - 35 foot lengths, but still has not gotten back to me with a price. The original rolls I bought were approximately 100 feet in length and looked just like a normal roll of seagrass. It would be nice to respond to this forum, but I would also appreciate a direct email to me - due to time constraints. Thank you all very much! It goes into the rinse water. I dye my reed with Rit dye and rinse until the water is clear. Then I put the retayne in the last rinse water. I mix that up into a separate container and use it batch after batch. I usual dye a lot when I dye, so I only make a mess a few times. I can be Pig Pen most of the time. I also get the retayne at the quilt store. I have used about a third of my 16oz. bottle in a year's time. All I can say is that I am very happy that I found the retayne. Boy, for a lurker I have been wordy tonight. Thanks David for all of your hard work. Happy Weaving And Take Care, Alene Miller SW Missouri %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: AMB Convention Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2002 21:26:39 -0500 From: "Alene Miller" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Hello everyone and a big thank you to David for this wonderful site. I have been a lurker for a long time, only posting a few times. I have really learned a lot from this wonderful place for exchanging ideas. This has been a year of firsts. A friend and I were in our first craft festival together this year and planning to do it again. And my second - first is approaching quickly. I will be attending the Michigan Basket convention later this month. It will be my first convention and I am wondering if any of the Weavers Word clan will be wearing ribbons as last year. It would be so nice to put a face with a name that I have seen in the postings. I would really like to meet some of the Weavers Word group. I was VERY lucky with my class selections for the convention. I know that getting my first three choices is almost unheard of, but that is exactly what happened. I will be taking an antler class with Jill Choate, a footstool project with Sandra Lyons, and a twill basket with Karen Wheeler. WOW!!! Plus, I will get to add 2 new states to my list of states visited. Please think about wearing ribbons at the convention it would be fun. Thanks again David - Happy Weaving Alene Miller SW Missouri %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Nantucket Lightship Basket Weekend Workshops Sent: Thursday, October 03, 2002 1:51 PM From: DMMONTE1@aol.com To: davidc@iei.net Hi, Just wanted to tell everyone that I have just returned from teaching a weekend workshop on Nantucket Lightship Baskets at Quiltessentials in Auburn, Maine. I do sometimes use synthetic fiber in my baskets, especially when I find a vast difference in prices. Recently found some black nylon belt tape for ten cents a yard! I'm using it in totes woven of plastic/nylon strapping tape. I still insist on natural fibers for most of my clothes, though. Can't handle synthetics up against my bare skin. I'll buy pre-owned naturals before spending money on new synthetics. The class Terrie Fry taught at Woven Circle on the 4th of August was a Barrel Basket. The spokes are about 5/8 inch flat reed and the base is twined. The sides go nearly straight up with some color woven in. The ash rim is nailed on with copper tacks. It's a nice size for a small waste-paper basket. At the September WC meeting, Sandra McCormick taught a small market type basket on a D handle. The sides are twined of round reed and dyed sea grass. It's a nice textural effect. I'm hoping to be off to Lincoln, NE, soon to stay with my sister-in-law when she gets out of the hospital. (Except for a couple of weeks in July, Linda has been hospitalized since mid-February with pancreatitis and various complications and multiple surgeries.) Don't have a date yet, but there's a chance it will be before the end of this month (October). Looking forward to seeing some local basket weavers while in Lincoln & maybe getting an evening or weekend class (or two) set up to teach. I plan to take my mother-in-law's two antique chairs to recane, & several basket projects. If any of you are in or near Lincoln, please let me know if you'd like to get together. Are there any local basket guilds or groups in the area? "Weavers Words" Vol. 6 Iss. 13 Sharon Klusmann - My brother uses a water based stain on some of his wood working projects. It is available from Paxton Beautiful Woods in Kansas City, MO. Paxton has a number of stores around the country. Do a web search on "Paxton Beautiful Woods" to find the location nearest you. Or search on "water soluble wood stain". I believe the powder is dissolved in alcohol and then mixed with water. Darlene - I don't know of a book specifically about driftwood baskets, but I have written a pattern (Beachcomber Basket) that gives the basics. It is a flat back wall pouch rib basket made on driftwood. The pattern is available at www.basketpatterns.com and Gratiot Lake Basketry. "Weavers Words" Vol. 6 Iss. 14 Kate Conroy - I love your tip about putting vinegar water on poison ivy to kill it. I'll certainly try that. Elaine - Thanks for your Alaska report. I especially like your color combination for the commemorative basket you're making! Your description was so vivid it makes me long for another trip to Alaska. If you get the basket done by next summer, maybe you could bring it with you to the MBG convention in KC and show it off (hint, hint). "Weavers Words" Vol. 6 Iss. 15 Jennifer Mulcare-Sullivan - Please tell us more about the reed trainer tool. What does it look like and how is it used? Inquiring tool junkies want to know.
