No luck with answers, but did chance upon a wonderful find in Maine. In Bar Harbor at the Abbe Museum, I had the pleasure of meeting Clara Neptune Keezer, a Passamaquoddy elder, who was awarded a 2002 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her baskets are wonderful. Not sure if the exhibit is still there. It was exciting to meet her, too. Just north of Bangor in a town called Old Town, there is also a museum, which had a wonderful exhibit of basketry. I think this is an ongoing exhibit. It is sponsored by the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance. The Gallery is called the Wabanaki Arts Center Gallery. It is located on North Main Street in Old Town and is not difficult to find. Hope you find some wonderful places. I have seen it in fabric stores in our area that carry upholstery cloth. Sometimes the mesh wrapped stuff is filled with paper so beware. I personally like the cotton rope cording. It looks great in nautical baskets when used as twining. I am looking for a source, Rose-e-baskets. Are you still in business? Could you email me? Have to miss the Oregon Retreat this year, but won't miss the spring retreat here on the Olympic Peninsula. The classes offered are top notch, as are the teachers! The first weekend in October, I will be off to the Northwest Native American Basketweavers Assoc. gathering in north central Washington State. This will be either the 7th or 8th, and I love to watch all the weavers work. From warm, sunny Seattle. Thanks, Dédé %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Rit Dye Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2002 9:56 AM From: Eve Fulton To: David Collins I am hoping someone out there can help me. I am at the point where I would like to try the Rit dye colors, however all the directions are given are for clothing. Can someone help me out and let me know what the proportions are for dyeing one pound of reed? Thanks in advance for you help. Eve Littlestown, PA %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Reed And Cane Trainer Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2002 10:08 AM From: John Hill To: Weavers Words In response to the many people that have inquired, here is some info on the Reed and Cane Trainers: THE REED and CANE TRAINER Designed and built by John Hill 6 Jump Cove Rd. Weaverville, NC 28787 828-645-6633 hill2@mindspring.com The purpose of this tool is to curve the reed or cane into a circular arc. The double wheel model has 2 specially made wheels, one with a narrow groove for cane and one with a wider groove for reed. They each work on the same principle. Clamp the handle of the Trainer along the edge of a table or diagonally across the corner of a table, so that the handle is adequately supported, and the wheels are in a vertical position close to your body. If a table is not handy you may also sit on the handle, and the weight of your body will support it. Make sure the reed or cane is well soaked and pliable. Beginning at the end of the piece of reed or cane, feed the reed or cane into the slot of the Trainer. Hold it in the groove with one hand and pull it into the groove all the way around the wheel, while keeping the wheel from turning. Continue to advance the reed or cane into the wheel in this manner. Do not pull on the reed or cane with both hands while pulling it around the wheel because it will "untrain" the reed or cane that you have just done. I make two models. A single wheel model for training or curling reed, and a single wheel model for training or curling cane, and a double wheel model with two wheels, one for reed and one for cane. The single is $30 including shipping and the double is $40 including shipping. Email me which model you want (reed or cane or double) and your shipping address and I will send it to you with an invoice and you can then mail me a check. The tools work great. You will be very pleased. Thanks, John Hill 6 Jump Cove Rd. We have a couple of openings in a Nantucket sewing basket class which is scheduled for October 19 & 20. This basket is a beautiful work of art and also a chance to delight in the fall flavor of the Finger Lakes in upstate New York. The second basket will be shaker inspired feather basket of black ash. This will be held on Monday and Tuesday, November 11th and 12th (November 11th is Veteran's Day so may be a holiday for some of you). There are still openings in this class. Both classes will be taught in John's "to die for" studio in his lovely Cobblestone home. Please contact me for details and pictures of these baskets. Piombino To: davidc@iei.net I recently made my first basket at a basket-making workshop. I would like the reed to be darker and thought of staining. The problem is that I have some antique blue reed woven into the basket and covering the handle. Is it possible to stain without affecting these areas? Also, I purchased the materials to make another basket - same design. I would like to darken the plain reed prior to weaving. Is it better to purchase a light brown dye or a stain? Thank you for any advice you can provide.
