I didn't know that re-hydrating was even possible, although I had heard if a piece of birch was resisting being bent, one could boil it? (If small enough piece) What a neat piece of information and the reasoning is sound. Thank you Daniel! This was our 14th year. It is great exposure for the guild. Twelve guild members sold baskets. Our sales were just under $3,000 - down about 10% from last year but good considering the heat and the economy. We do weaving demonstrations, and also collect names for our beginner class, which is in Nov. It's good for members to sell baskets and get money to buy MORE supplies. This is the only place some members have to sell their baskets and fair goers look for us year after year. Its fun -- when it isn't too hot. I am taking the Intertwine basket class from you on Sept 21 at Tracy Welch's just outside of Davenport, Iowa. I'm looking forward to it. I am interested in one of you predrilled-with-ribs-already-in kits. I'd like a larger size. If it would be easier I could buy one at your class. If not, just let me know how much. Thanks. And that is getting to be a problem. I have been asked to work on several baskets and old wicker and I have no idea as to where I can get supplies. One gentleman has shown up from Lubbock, TX and has thrown me a good one. I am needing oak splints in a 2" width for one rather large basket repair. The basket has been with him for many years, and it has taken a beating. One side is about ready to fall apart. The splints would need to be at least 12" long to patch or 3' to completely replace and I would need at least 6. I think I can use the old pieces to patch up the rim. I am also looking for machine cane in a pattern that would work on a wicker corner chair. The owner does not like the standard patterns of 7-step or of close woven or of radio weave. Has anybody got any suggestions? My hobby turned business of seat weaving is doing steady since April and I enjoy it. My fingers have yet to be calloused by the work and it amazes many of the people that watch me work when I am set up at the flea market. As they say, do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. And they mean it. Lowe To: davidc@iei.net David I realize this is long but if you feel it's worthwhile perhaps you would want to include it in the next Weavers Word, if not I'm sure you will be as moved as I was. Marilyn >>>>>I sat in a movie theater watching "Schindler's List," asked myself, "Why didn't the Jews fight back?" Now I know why. I sat in a movie theater, watching "Pearl Harbor" and asked myself, "Why weren't we prepared?" Now I know why. Civilized people cannot fathom, much less predict, the actions of evil people. On September 11, dozens of capable airplane passengers allowed themselves to be overpowered by a handful of poorly armed terrorists because they did not comprehend the depth of hatred that motivated their captors. On September 11, thousands of innocent people were murdered because too many Americans naively reject the reality that some nations are dedicated to the dominance of others. Many political pundits, pacifists and media personnel want us to forget the carnage. They say we must focus on the bravery of the rescuers and ignore the cowardice of the killers. They implore us to understand the motivation of the perpetrators. Major television stations have announced they will assist the healing process by not replaying devastating footage of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers. I will not be manipulated. I will not pretend to understand. I will not forget. I will not forget the liberal media who abused freedom of the press to kick our country when it was vulnerable and hurting. I will not forget that CBS anchor Dan Rather preceded President Bush's address to the nation with the snide remark, "No matter how you feel about him, he is still our president." I will not forget that ABC TV anchor Peter Jennings questioned President Bush's motives for not returning immediately to Washington, DC and commented, "We're all pretty skeptical and cynical about Washington." And I will not forget that ABC's Mark Halperin warned if reporters weren't informed of every little detail of this war, they aren't "likely -- nor should they be expected -- to show deference." I will not isolate myself from my fellow Americans by pretending an attack on the USS Cole in Yemen was not an attack on the United States of America. I will not forget the Clinton administration equipped Islamic terrorists and their supporters with the world's most sophisticated telecommunications equipment and encryption technology, thereby compromising America's ability to trace terrorist radio, cell phone, land lines, faxes and modem communications. I will not be appeased with pointless, quick retaliatory strikes like those perfected by the previous administration. I will not be comforted by "feel-good, do nothing" regulations like the silly "Have your bags been under your control?" question at the airport. I will not be influenced by so called, "antiwar demonstrators" who exploit the right of expression to chant anti-American obscenities. I will not forget the moral victory handed the North Vietnamese by American war protesters who reviled and spat upon the returning soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines. I will not be softened by the wishful thinking of pacifists who chose reassurance over reality. I will embrace the wise words of Prime Minister Tony Blair who told Labor Party conference, "They have no moral inhibition on the slaughter of the innocent. If they could have murdered not 7,000 but 70,000, does anyone doubt they would have done so and rejoiced in it? There is no compromise possible with such people, no meeting of minds, no point of understanding with such terror. Just a choice: defeat it or be defeated by it. And defeat it we must!" I will force myself to: -hear the weeping -feel the helplessness -imagine the terror -sense the panic -smell the burning flesh -experience the loss -remember the hatred. I sat in a movie theater, watching "Private Ryan" and asked myself, "Where did they find the courage?" Now I know. We have no choice. Living without liberty is not living. --Ed Evans, MGySgt., USMC (Ret.) Not as lean, Not as mean, But still a Marine. Keep this going until every living American has read it and memorized it so we don't make the same mistake again. <<<<< %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Crossing Over Sent: Monday, September 02, 2002 12:14 PM From: Jill Choate To: Undisclosed-Recipient Crossing Over. It is hard to come from the land of the north and learn the quaint customs of the Ozarks but I've been trying. I have found in my three year sojourn that there are many differences where I have been lacking in my ability to fit in. My husband, (a native Missourian) has had no such problem however and has eagerly instructed me in proper etiquette when required. For instance, there are certain steps that are necessary to take before going fishing. First off, go down to the barn where your horses reside. Commence to slapping and swatting at them with the intent of killing horse flies before they draw blood from your hide. Make sure to stand clear of the back end of the animals while doing so. Head for the river and bring your dogs too. Throw them in the river and let them swim around awhile. When they come out dripping, the hordes of flies will swarm them and make them act as though they have lost their sanity. Commence to slapping and swatting at them making sure that you avoid their teeth as they try to assist you in this endeavor. Now you got some bait. Take one of those big, buzzy, buggers and sadistically thread their bodies through the hook on the fishing line. This is a fine karmic payback for all the blood that you have sacrificed in pursuit of the cause. Toss that hummer out there and prepare to battle the "goggle eyes" with the end result being two luscious bites (one on each side) when cooked. Yum! With this in mind repeat the process over several days. If you're lucky in two weeks you'll have enough for a fish fry. Who says I don't know how to fly fish. Not only are there fishing methods different here, their endearments are a little on the odd side as well. I knew my husband really liked me when he came up, scratched my head, and said, "my butt itches". This, of course, was only in the courting days. Now I know he really loves me because he opens up my apron pocket and spits in it. This, after thirteen years of marriage. I can't wait to see what happens on our 50th. If I let him live that long. The weather is beginning to cool here and we are anticipating our travel back to the homeland. Before we go we will be stopping by St. Louis Basketry Supply to host a class as well as with the Quad Cities Basketry Guild in Iowa. If you get a chance stop by and see us as we start the long haul home. We are still planning our summer tour schedule for next year. If you'd like to be part of it give us a hoot and we'll schedule you in. Want to get some baskets done before the holidays? We can help. Order your J. Choate Basketry design basket kits from our website www.jchoatebasketry.com and we'll get whatever you need out to you. Until we meet on the trail.
