I sent my brother some of my other baskets and he just loves them! I'm sure he will love a fishing creel! Lois, You are so right about weavers needing to stick together and share. I was also disappointed to hear that a member of the weaving community here in Honolulu would know of a well-known weaver in town and not share with the entire weaving community, especially since there is such a small group of weavers here! Aloha, Lisa %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Sharing Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 11:37:01 -0400 From: "Roman Monastyrski" To: "ka9zre" I'm with Lois about weaving being a sharing tradition. Now of course that doesn't include stealing patterns, but where would WE be if those weavers before us and before the technology age had NOT "passed it on". A while ago my guild was inviting teachers to come to the guild to teach. We first offered it to the guild members and some compensation was made from the guild kitty. Then to make the class worthwhile for the teacher, we offered it to other guilds and weavers in the area. It made more sense for the teacher to have an opportunity to teach as many as were available to make her trip worthwhile and profitable. And it was a way to introduce and expose her special style to a community that might otherwise not have a chance. A child's song keeps going through my mind - It Only Take a Spark. None of us is immortal and we, as basket makers, should want to pass it on. That seems to no longer be the case. We have asked our importer about the smoked reed, his reply is that it is a chemical process. Basically, it is dyed. Highway departments plant it on the sides of roads when they build. Don't gather it on a freeway or you'll be charged $160! Ask your local extension agent who plants it in your state. Ask the farmer to cut some from the edges of his fields. Take scissors and cut close to the ground. Take off the seed heads, they attract moths. Take off the outer coating on the straw to show the beautiful bright yellow underneath. Sent: Thursday, June 13, 2002 12:01 AM From: Beth Jones To: davidc@iei.net Is the Weaver's words archive searchable, or do I have to open each issue and search for the phrase I'm interested in? There was a recent message about milk painting -- I would like to know what it is and how to do it. Also, other methods for making a basket look "distressed". Also, I would like to know how to get reed to that white color I've seen a few times - not just natural light beige but WHITE. Do you just use good old Clorox bleach? One of the baskets in the (beautiful!) slideshow of swap baskets is white; another looked very light but it may have been the lighting. Thanks For Any Help! Took me 6 weeks to get home from North Carolina Convention. I am now blasting my way through company and then gear up time for Michigan convention. Lois - The reason you were not invited to participate in the weaving classes, is because Pattie Bagley was here on vacation visiting me for 10 days and I chose whom to invite to a class that I asked Pattie to teach. It was not an all island invitation. I don't remember getting invited to Bert Comstock's class while she was visiting here. Sharing goes both ways. Thank you for inquiring though...the next time a mainland teacher comes to visit me, I will remember to invite every weaver that lives on Oahu. Aloha and have a sunny day... First, David thank you for maintaining this wonderful forum. I have learned so much from the give and take on this site. After pulling out the "Baskets from Natures Bounty" for the umpteen time, I have watched for some tiny hint on the use of Blackberry canes in basketry. Elizabeth Jensen states that the vines and shoots are used in wickerwork, and coiling as core and stitching. I have not used much of the naturals and I am limited to access to the woods and fields. I do have access to Blackberry canes. Are they split and scraped down similar to the native gathering a prep of willow? Are they used whole? They can be fiberous after trying to chop some off with non-appropriate tool. Would a basket be as tough as the canes are to cut, gather and wrangle in general? I will greatly appreciate any information on this thorny subject. If I can figure out just how they are used, then MAYBE I can keep them under control. :-) LOL When I planted the 5 plants several years ago, I did not know just what challenge they could be. They would take over my backyard if I let them. But with the rain this spring at the right time, I will be busy picking berries at least 3 times a week into August. Well happy weaving and thanks again, Alene Miller SW Missouri %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Florida In August Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 22:32:49 +0000 From: "sassy katie" To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Faye, You asked "what's happening in Florida in August? Besides it being the hottest month of the year? Any basket classes?" The Leesburg Center for the Arts is holding its usual 4th Saturday Basketry Class on August 27th. We're doing a "Dog Days Crazy Quilt Beanpot Basket". You didn't say where in Florida you'll be: Leesburg is a kind of artsy small town a little north of Orlando. The monthly meeting of the Florida Gourd Society "Seedy Gourd Patch" is the third Saturday of the month. This month, the workshop is putting philodendron sheaths on a prepared gourd. I have no idea what it will be in August. They meet in Belleview, which is about 20 miles up the road from Leesburg. Most of the basketry guilds don't meet in the summer, as most of their members are 'snowbirds'. In October 2001 at the AMB (Michigan's-20th Anniversary Celebration) Convention, I was the proud winner of a week's paid tuition to the art's camp, John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. I needed to use the scholarship in the year 2002 on a basket class, so after searching the catalog over and over (sooooo many cool things, I couldn't decide), my friend, Mary Francek (who told me I couldn't go to camp without a chaperone) and I will be leaving for camp on July 12th. We have chosen the class "Back Packs, Totes and Market Baskets" by Valerie Poirier, to be taught July 14th - 20th. Since I've never been to a camp before, I am totally excited. All the while I was getting ready for my son's open house, I selfishly kept thinking, ROADTRIP!!! Will write again after the camp. You can contact them at: www.folkschool.org or 800/365-5724 for more information. Somehow weaving and teaching in rural settings with fresh air, complete with wonderful meals, works well together! Lois in Honolulu, Tintex is sold in Canada and all I used for years. The colors differ very slightly from Rit and I treated dyed reed exactly the same re. rinsing and setting. However, the two brands did not mix well to form a new color - somehow one bleached out the other. Tintex did not keep as well as Rit. Now that I live in the states, I use Rit because it is accessible, but sometimes will buy Tintex back in Ontario. Good Weaving, Everyone! I usually charge 10% of the cost of the materials inside the box for shipping cost. But this week I had a rude awakening. I had to ship out supplies this last week and found that you have to be careful...really careful.!! One day I shipped out a one-pound package of reed to a person and took it to my usual store in town. The reed & stuff came to 7 bucks but the postage was $7.50 on that UPS package. The next day I had the equal amount of supplies to send out so I took it to another store to ship it out. They charged me $6.00 for the same above. I was kind of cranky about it, but knew there was nothing I could do, but I though it was a little steep. Later in the week I had the same experience. Two packages with equal weight and sized boxes I tried shipping them at difference shops to see what kind of differences where were. I went to Boxes Etc and UPS. Boxes Etc was $18.00 higher then UPS. If you didn't know UPS bought out Boxes Etc....so I expected that the shipping costs would be about the same. Wrong!!! $18.00 more, I thought was a pretty good size markup. The little stores can charge anything they want to and they are fairly reasonable, but don't go to Boxes Etc.!!! Any one else had any eye opening experiences on shipping...? I have an old stool that had a hickory seat woven in it and the hickory has splintered and broken. I would like to weave a reed seat, but can't get started. I was trying to use 7/8" flat reed, but cannot get glue to hold it and if I try to tack it, the reed splits. I have instructions on the actual weaving, but can't get the 1st piece of reed to hold in place so that I can begin. Could someone out there let me know what my problem is? Should I use smaller reed that is more flexible? Thanks In Advance For Any Help! Sandy Brown %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: A Couple Of Small Suggestions Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 19:47:14 -0600 From: "Beth Jones" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com I've learned many useful ideas from this list. Now I will offer a couple of ideas that I use. When I measure reed, I usually do it on a free-standing counter in my kitchen. This counter has a laminate top (also known as Formica). I don't have the luxury of gluing a ruler to this counter top, but measuring each piece of reed with my yardstick gets old very fast, as well as being error-prone. So I mark the measurements I will need right onto the countertop, with pencil. I mark a solid line for the length of the reed, and a little V for the center mark. I write the number of inches by each mark (on the table). Now I can slap on a piece of reed (wet or dry), mark the center and the cut line, and zip along to the next piece. As for marking the cut line, I mark it with a line across the reed, then an X going right through the cut line. When I cut the reed, this leaves a little > mark at the tip of the reed. I use this mark to show me which side is the "wrong" side of the reed. Also, if I have several different lengths I'm cutting, I will write the length in smallish numbers right onto the reed. These markings never show, because they are either cut off or folded under. But when I'm looking for the 36" or 38" or 40" piece of reed, I can find it easily because the number is right on there.
