I have just made my first couple of rib baskets and really like them. I have also been reading some about them. I have a question that I was hoping someone could answer for me. Why is it that some suggest using a pencil sharpener for the rib points while others say never use one? What are the advantages/disadvantages of doing this? Mitchell" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com Hey David! Congrats on getting to Volume 6, as always I thank you for doing such a great job. You are the best! I just received some information about Woodlanders Gathering being held for the first time in the Midwest, July 8-10 in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. www.woodlanders.com This site has all the information about the event, which includes basketry, willow and twig furniture, making shave horses, natural dyes and lots more. Sounds like a pretty cool workshop. Mineral Point, WI is about 40 miles south of Madison WI. Just thought I would past the above information along, it is an interesting website even if you are not able to think about attending the workshop. On another note, I am sorry I have not taken the time to say what a great time I had at the INDY Convention. The students in my classes were great, talented, creative and fun weavers, I am hoping they enjoyed the experience half as much as I did. Thanks to everyone who made the convention happen! And now back to planning my trip to St. Louis and the Missouri Convention! I was not aware that in dealing with unwanted spam, some people have their server automatically contact you when they discover an e-mail that is also sent to many other people. I received many similar explanations from other people. This forum has always been so helpful, sharing and educating, and I have learned something new. Also, it gave me the opportunity to hear from old, Internet friends. :-) Also, many thanks to Alison Buckholtz for her eloquent writing about her trip to Ayaseo, Japan and the studio of bamboo weaver Hirkawa-san. Delightful! On another note, I had stopped weaving for a few months, after Carpal Tunnel surgery (on my DR's advice) and receiving the Weaver's Word kept my interest high and anxious to resume weaving. There is definitely a difference...no pain, but I lost my rhythm. Doesn't take long to get out of weaving form, but I'm glad to be weaving again and anxious to be back in my "groove." Nye To: davidc@iei.net About 6 weeks ago I spent an afternoon on snowshoes walking a highland black ash swamp with a new acquaintance--a forester who specializes in the management of quality hardwood forests. In exchange for a packbasket (a very good deal for him) we selected two veneer trees (a very good deal for me). Yesterday I went over and spent the morning with the logger and brought the two 12' logs home. I peeled the bark I pounded the first length and got five of the most beautiful, white, 12' long x 1 1/2" wide splint that will easily divide into quarters--double satin heaven. I mention this to remind everyone that for those of use that rely on the forest, the foresters and loggers who spend their lives in the forests can be our friends. To a one, every forester and logger that I have encountered, explained what I do and what I need, and solicited their help, have been more than willing to go out of their way to be of assistance. Quality black ash is getting very difficult to find and these folks can be a great asset. My world is right again and I will get materials enough from these two logs to last several years and hundreds of baskets. So while you are hugging that tree--don't forget to also give that logger a kiss. One day we visited the studio of a painter. As we entered the building we were in a gallery/shop of paintings hanging on the wall. Many of the painting were exactly the same. After close inspection we realized that they each had different artists names on them, but each one looked exactly alike! After questioning the artist, we learned that each of the paintings that were the same were painted by his apprentices. You see, in Indonesia it is considered a good thing that you "copy" your teacher. This is how you learn the art form from the master! A strange way for us American artist's to think! Groups Wicker Woman's Weavings subscriber list, I am purging the list of old email addresses that no longer work. I have received several bounces lately and am trying to clean up the list now. Currently, there are 448 subscribers, but that number changes all the time. I just found out that it's because of the bounces that the number drops -- I wondered why the new subscribers didn't increase as rapidly as I thought they should have been! There is even a full page listing that I just discovered of those bouncing email addresses. If you were a subscriber but have changed your email address and have been dropped from the list, but would again like to receive the newsletter, please go to my domain website and re-subscribe on the Newsletter page. For those of you not already subscribed, my newsletter is about wicker furniture, seat weaving of all types and handmade baskets. It's a self-published newsletter without a bulletin board or member posts, or forum of any kind. Yet live within 20 miles of Rochester and the Mayo Clinic and be within 70 miles of the big metropolis of Minneapolis/St. Paul? Care to revive that old tradition of the shopkeeper living above his store? Then have I got the deal for you, read on for a fantastic business opportunity! Our commercial storefront Wicker Woman building with its two bedroom apartment above, is for sale and on the market, shown by appointment only (507) 753-2006. After the sale, we will be relocating to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area or northern Minnesota, where I will again resume the business. From this date on, I will not be taking any more new wicker repair customers until after I have reestablished the business, but will complete the ones already in the shop and hopefully some on the callback list, before we move. Inventory will be greatly reduced, including both cane and basket materials and my antique wicker furniture. The shop will remain open by chance or appointment, so call first before coming over. Classes already scheduled for this year will be completed, but I may have to take a sabbatical on the teaching and proposing for workshops and conventions for next year. This website will remain in operation no matter where my business is located, the newsletter will still be published monthly, and I will still be publishing patterns and teaching classes.
