I thought you must travel by freight train! Still, you are a braver soul than me! Dianne - about Nantucket tips - You may want to search back issues of WW. Over the past few years I have nearly written a book in response to questions about Nantucket baskets, from shaping staves to scarfing and nailing rims. Most weaving stands that I have seen and the ones I use myself, use a 5/16 diameter post, but occasionally you will find a mold and/or stand that uses a larger post so you may want to double check. Metal posts are best if you are going to be using larger molds, but for something relatively small like a 6" mold, a wooden post is fine. If you go to the trouble of buying a mold I would make sure that you could get parts for it later, like handles, rim and bases. There is nothing worse than having a mold that you can't get any wood parts for. I prefer molds that actually measure the size designation. What I mean by that is, a 6" mold itself would measure 6" in diameter, not the finished basket. The basket would be more like 6 1/2". This isn't a big deal, but it does make it easier if you are dealing with a new supplier of handles and rims. Mary - about bee skeps - Thanks for the info that was very interesting. I never really thought of why you never really see antique skeps. I always wondering if people really used them in the USA or if it was only a European tradition. Well that is about it for me. I just taught my last class of the season this weekend and will have a break now until fall. I am looking forward to hosting another workshop with Martha Wetherbee this June. We will be beginning a nesting set of Nantucket's, 10"-12"-14", starting with the 10" and will complete them over the next 3 years. They are truly spectacular. We will also be doing a quarter scale miniature of a Shaker woodchip basket of brown ash and oak. It is also quite beautiful. If you are interested in seeing any of these baskets you can visit my website at http://www.jaskets.com/ and click on the link to the 2002 Martha Wetherbee Workshop. There are only a few spots remaining so if you would like to join us contact me quickly. Just a quick reminder that your personally woven basket must be sent to your swap partner no later than May 17, 2002. (Three baskets have already been shipped.) If you have a digital camera, please take a picture of your basket and send the jpg to evergree@erinet.com - the hotmail address does not allow me a great deal of space. I will set up a page on Snapfish.com so that all can view the completed baskets from this swap. First, those of you who are interesting in bending your own handles try to find a fairly new book called Wood Benders Handbook by Zachary Taylor. He explains why wood breaks when you try to bend it and how to solve the problem. It's so easy you will kick yourself for all the blanks you have broken. I've had great success since I started using his method. Although his directions are written for wood that is steamed I see no reason why it wouldn't work for green wood as well. Next about weaving stands. There are all kinds out there but you can easily make one yourself. Get a piece of 2x4 about 2 feet long. Also 2 "C" clamps big enough to hold both the wood and the thickness of your table/bench whatever. Clamp to your table with the 4" side flat to the table. Just drill holes in the wood at whatever angle you want and what ever size you need. Different molds use different size dowels for stands. Heaven forbid they should be standardized. This is an easy/cheap way to make a stand until you decide that you are going to make enough mold woven baskets to justify the cost. I bought one of the stands that Tony talked about in a past newsletter and I love it. I also learned something from Patti Hill at NCBA about the placement of the stand. I had always used it fairly high (about elbow level) thinking it would make my arms less tired. Patti works low with the mold basically almost in her lap with just enough room to turn it. This is much better. My neck and shoulders didn't bother me nearly as much. Of course this won't work on the stands you clamp to a table. Finally about deepening the notches on handles. Yes they will be more fragile if you get the notch too deep. This isn't as much of a problem with oak/cherry what ever handles than with half round or reed. Instead I cut a notch in my rim so it will be more flexible and fit around the handle tighter. Guess that's it for now. Billie in Va. I have a friend who's Husband has a Potowatomi heritage and she would like to make him a basket for Christmas. I have found many sites on Native American baskets but nothing on the Potowatomi. If any of you have an idea please email me. THANKS! As some of you know, I sell Nantucket baskets off of my website and through people I know. Since I also teach full time, my basket making is a sideline and a hobby. I have always had enough orders off of my website to keep me busy but not too busy. Since September 11, I have noticed a definite decrease in contacts from my website. Where I used to get several email inquiries a week, I now only get two a month! It's quite a difference. Are any of you who also sell noticing a big difference or is it just me? I also wondered if the economy is causing problems with the expensive baskets. Just interested if any of you have had a similar problem. Thanks, Mindy Lower http://members.aeroinc.net/nantucket/ %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Knotting And Teaching From: Helen Schwartz To: Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 8:28 AM Two Questions: 1. I have long admired knotted baskets because of the design flexibility that they allow the weaver. BUT I have been unable to find any books or instruction for making them. Can anyone recommend any books or web sites where I can find some guidance? 2. In a similar vein. The Penn-Jersey basket Guild is making up the teaching schedule for next year. Is there anyone who could teach a class in knotting OR do you know of anyone we can contact? Thank You, Helen Schwartz %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Favorite Color Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 8:31 AM From: Nancy Brandt To: Weavers words Hello Weavers, I have not been able to order my favorite color - Jadvick Country Blue; wish I had ordered a gross while still in stock; Rit Country Blue is close but scarce around here. Rit royal blue is too bright. Any ideas? I love Copen or Williamsburg Blue. I have been using Retayne but my last batch, green, still bled into the natural weavers. Can't imagine what I did differently. Retayne goes into the rinse water. Is anyone using the product that goes into the dye bath? Do you use both? Thanks, Nancy Glen Arm, MD %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Carol Antrim's Large Magazine Basket Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 5:42 PM From: Alecia Ghilarducci To: Dear David & Subscribers, I am new to WW and would like to introduce myself. My name is Alecia & I've been weaving for about a year taking classes & learning from books & patterns (&having a blast!). I had no idea there was so much basketry info & so many friendly, helpful, talented people on the web, but I am devouring everything I can find. Thank you for this forum, I feel as if I am getting to know some of you already. I was browsing through Carol Antrim's website and came across a basket that I would really love to make, she calls it a large magazine basket. The shape kind of reminds me of a terra cotta strawberry pot - openings on 2 sides at 3or 4 levels. I e-mailed her to ask if she sold a pattern & she does not. She remembers e-mailing instructions for it to several people but did not save a copy for herself. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone here have her instructions? It would be difficult for me with my limited experience to figure out how to make it without having a pattern or at the very least being able to study the basket itself. I hope you can picture what I am describing; you can see a picture of it on her web site (I think it's cantrimbaskets.com). I would be eternally grateful for any help finding her instructions or a similar pattern. Thanks, hope to hear from someone, and hope I can also contribute in the future. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaving Classes Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 09:46:28 -0400 From: "Country Seat-Angie Wagner" Organization: The Country Seat To: "Weavers Words David Collins" Hi All! One of the baskets in my future will be a Nantucket basket. How surprising to see someone who teaches Nantucket baskets from Somerset, MA, of all places. That is where I grew up, so maybe sometime when I am visiting home, I can take one of your classes. Are you from Somerset? From MA? Or from elsewhere? How did you get started with Nantucket baskets? I am intrigued. Claudia Beckner cbecknersped@yahoo.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% That's All For Now Folks.
