Dear WW readers, Maybe I missed it but I didn't see anyone mention getting waxed linen thread or waxed linen kits from RoyalWood Ltd. www.royalwoodltd.com/ Bill and Kathy Halter have the most complete selection of colors and sizes of waxed linen. The kits are wonderful and it is just an all around pleasure to shop with them either at conventions or via phone or email. Royalwood had a great vending room at NCBA and will have a wonderful display at the up coming convention in Indiana. So check them out in person or on line for great waxed linen and other wonderful weaving materials. Hope everyone is finally enjoying spring weather... here in MN it is Easter and it is snowing... but it is "spring" snow!!! Since she taught our guild a small waxed linen bucket in late January, I can*t keep my hands off the stuff. I*ve been weaving kits and making my own little creations--the current one being woven with hemp and waxed linen (though I found it is much easier to work with the waxed linen than it is with hemp which seems to have a mind of its own). This is fun weaving--and selfish weaving as I*m doing this for myself and not to sell. I found a book yesterday with directions for small hemp pouches and I*m having a great time combining the two mediums. This is something I can do in the evening when the regular baskets have been put aside. No basins or water or clothespins to worry about! I carry a project with me--even for short trips in the truck. David, I*m rooting for your Hoosiers (since Duke didn*t make the cut)! Here is the info: April 18 and April 25, 2002 at Del's in East Freetown, MA. We will be making a beautiful 6" oval with swing handle. The hours are 9AM-4PM, all materials are included, just bring your normal basketmaking tools and a lunch. This is a great class if you've always wanted to learn to weave an oval. Class size is always limited to insure that you get the attention you need. We always have a fun day in a great work space. Please call Del's for pre-registration and more info at 508-763-5555. I will also be teaching at Quiltessentials in Auburn, Maine on April 27 and 28, 2002. Quiltessentials is a quilting and basketry shop. At this class you can choose from over 80 molds in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. This is always a great, fun, learning weekend with some wonderful people. You will become addicted to this class! I do quite a few weekends at this location each year. We now weave in two adjoining brand new beautiful and bright classrooms! Call for pre-registration and more info (including nearby accommodations) at 207-784-4486. I will also be teaching at the Fletcher Farm School of Arts and Crafts in Ludlow, Vt. on June 21, 22, and 23, 2002. This is the place for a learning vacation in Vermont! Here I will be teaching a Nantucket Lightship Fishing Creel Purse, an original design by Daryl and Karen Arawjo with whom I learned to make this purse many years ago. Dimensions are 11 x 7 x 5 1/2. You can see a picture of this purse on the website of the school at www.fletcherfarm.com or call 802-228-8770 for a catalog. We had such fun last year I'm so looking forward to teaching here again! We stay on site and have all of our meals together so you will definitely be completely immersed in a basketry weekend! Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. Thanks, Donele Monte %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: MO Guild Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002 15:30:59 -0500 From: "Country Seat-Angie Wagner" Organization: The Country Seat To: "Weavers Words David Collins" Barb in MO - Hi Barb, Would you please send me the name of your guild so I can list is on our Guild Page - www.countryseat.com/guilds.htm. First, you may want to make the notch in your handles deeper. Often times the bushel handles that you get are much more bulky than they need to be. If you make the notch deeper your rims should fit closer together and you won't have as much of a gap. A second thing you might try is using wider lashing material and double lashing the rims, which will cover more of the gap. I think many people use too narrow lashing for the size of their baskets. I always use as wide a lasher as I can. If you look at antique baskets you will see that the lashing material was often as wide or even wider than the weavers. It will depend on how much space you have between your uprights, but I often will use 3/8" or 1/2" flat to lash with. Now, this brings me to my last point. You will also want to use heavy rim, especially for a bushel style basket, something like 1/2" half round. With double lashing this will give you a very sturdy rim and one appropriate for the size and style of your basket (assuming it is a medium to large basket). Also the gap between the rims is much less apparent with larger rims. If you are only using flat or flat oval rims the rims will distort around the bushel handles and any gap will look huge. I know I am very passionate about basket construction so I hope this helps a bit. Have you all seen the latest issue of Martha Stewart Living? There is an article about brown ash basket maker Stephen Zeh of Maine. We have talked about him on WW before, but I don't think many are familiar with his work. They have some great photos of his beautiful baskets including a nesting set of 7 swing handle baskets that sells for $14,000 (yes, fourteen thousand dollars). He doesn't have any trouble selling his baskets and he makes a living for his family making and selling his work, so he must be doing something right. Well, that is about it for me. I may be making a career change in the next few months so I will have to let you all know how things progress. I have lots of research to do, but at least I am moving in an exciting direction. Happy Weaving, Tony Stubblefield St. Louis, MO http://www.jaskets.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: John McGuire Scarf Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 19:00:47 -0600 From: "Sarah Hartman" Organization: Heritage Baskets http://www.heritagebaskets.com To: ka9zre@yahoo.com To Linda in NC. The Carve & Scarf lives up to John's advertising. It makes it fool proof to get a perfect scarf joint (assuming you have fitted the rim to the basket). Very easy to use. He also sells a small draw knife which is easy to handle and well suited to doing rim work. The Carve & Scarf is a bit bulky and looks kind of funny the first time you use it. Once you make that first scarf joint, it will look lovely. We used it in John's classes last year at East Troy Basketry and all of us had perfect rims as a result. Sarah in the Northwest burbs of Chicago where we are getting our April Fool's Day snow. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Free Basketweaving Instruction And Online Classes Date: Tue, 2 Apr 2002 16:33:13 EST From: Linhebert@aol.com To: ka9zre@yahoo.com Fellow Basketweavers, We are now including BASKETWEAVING INSTRUCTION in our twice monthly HTML format newsletter. My sister is stationed in Elmendorf, AK and sent me an unusual gift. A bowl made from white birch bark the bark was folded on both long sides and lashed on top with very small reed around a vine rim. Measuring 3.5" H 6" W and 7.5" L. I thought myself blessed with such a unique piece. My complements to the weavers in your state. You guys do beautiful work. To "The Wicker Woman": I took the plunge and I am starting with the business of chair weaving. I would have liked to see you in MO in May, but finances are tight right now, so I will be sending you my new price list and a copy of my picture reference page. Wish I could show you more. Maybe later. Have a question in the mean time: I have a wicker swing that requires fiber rush with wire to repair the back, but the only material that I have found is too stiff and does more damage trying to place it. Was purchased W/HH Perkins within the last 2 yrs. Any suggestions as to whom else may carry what I need. And by the way, I love the basket of yours on the front cover of the 4th SDC basket seminar. Congratulations. This is for all the kids born in the 70's that do not remember this, and didn't have to bear the burden, that our fathers, mothers, and older brothers and sisters had to bear. Jane Fonda is being honored as one of the "100 Women of the Century." Unfortunately, many have forgotten and still countless others have never known how Ms. Fonda betrayed not only the idea of our country but specific men who served and sacrificed during Vietnam. The first part of this is from an F-4E pilot. The pilot's name is Jerry Driscoll, a River Rat. In 1968, the former Commandant of the USAF Survival School was a POW in Ho Lo Prison-the "Hanoi Hilton." Dragged from a stinking cesspit of a cell, cleaned, fed, and dressed in clean PJ's, he was ordered to describe for a visiting American "Peace Activist" the "lenient and humane treatment" he'd received. He spat at Ms. Fonda, was clubbed, and dragged away. During the subsequent beating, he fell forward upon the camp Commandant's feet, which sent that officer berserk. In '78, the AF Col. still suffered from double vision (which permanently ended his flying days) from the Vietnamese Col.'s frenzied application of a wooden baton. From 1963-65, Col. Larry Carrigan was in the 47FW/DO (F-4E's). He spent 6 years in the "Hilton"- the first three of which he was "missing in action". His wife lived on faith that he was still alive. His group, too, got the cleaned, fed, clothed routine in preparation for a "peace delegation" visit. They, however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that they still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper, with his SSN on it, in the palm of his hand. When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man's hand and asking little encouraging snippets like: "Aren't you sorry you bombed babies?" and "Are you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors?" Believing this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper. She took them all without missing a beat. At the end of the line and once the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the officer in charge and handed him the little pile of papers. Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Col. Carrigan was almost number four but he survived, which is the only reason we know about her actions that day. I was a civilian economic development advisor in Vietnam, and was captured by the North Vietnamese communists in South Vietnam in 1968, and held for over 5 years. I spent 27 months in solitary confinement, one year in a cage in Cambodia, and one year in a "black box" in Hanoi. My North Vietnamese captors deliberately poisoned and murdered a female missionary, a nurse in a leprosarium in Ban me Thuot, South Vietnam, whom I buried in the jungle near the Cambodian border. At one time, I was weighing approximately 90 lbs. (My normal weight is 170 lbs.) We were Jane Fonda's "war criminals." When Jane Fonda was in Hanoi, I was asked by the camp communist political officer if I would be willing to meet with Jane Fonda. I said yes, for I would like to tell her about the real treatment we POWs received different from the treatment purported by the North Vietnamese, and parroted by Jane Fonda, as "humane and lenient." Because of this, I spent three days on a rocky floor on my knees with outstretched arms with a large amount of steel placed on my hands, and beaten with a bamboo cane till my arms dipped. I had the opportunity to meet with Jane Fonda for a couple of hours after I was released. I asked her if she would be willing to debate me on TV. She did not answer me. This does not exemplify someone who should be honored as part of "100 Years of Great Women." Lest we forget..."100 years of great women" should never include a traitor whose hands are covered with the blood of so many patriots. There are few things I have strong visceral reactions to, but Hanoi Jane's participation in blatant treason, is one of them. Please take the time to forward to as many people as you possibly can. It will eventually end up on her computer and she needs to know that we will never forget. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Baskets Of Joy Update Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 14:49:05 -0500 From: "Baskets Of Joy" To: Undisclosed-Recipient NEW from BASKETS OF JOY Bread Basket with Blueberry Handles Kit KIT-52, $25.00 Order before April 15th and get 10% OFF!
