We squeezed 10 weavers into my living room and dining room, most of whom had never touched waxed linen and we created some mini-masterpieces. We had a great time...and Bert was pleased with the almost finished projects. After everyone left, Bert showed me the book from the NBO exhibit (we sat at my dining room table until nearly 2 am!) and I was stunned! Living in Hawaii, I sometimes feel isolated and now I know I am! I still can see the picture of the basket made from grapefruit rinds that was the most unique basket I*ve ever laid eyes on. I cannot remember the weaver*s name, but she is certainly the most creative weaver to make something from things I toss in the trash. :-) Bert*s visit was such a treat and our guild thanks her..and I thank her for taking time away from her belated honeymoon to make the Aloha guild feel a tad less isolated from our mainland sisters (and brothers). And thanks to her hubby who spent the evening at my computer and discovered a nasty growing virus--and after 2 days of trying to fix it ourselves, it went into the shop, so I was without a computer for nearly a week (talk about feeling isolated!) and lost my entire address book.. But that can be fixed, too--so thanks, Bob for uncovering that nasty virus. Hope everyone is well and weaving much. Aloha, Lois %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: NCBA T-Shirts Sent: Saturday, February 02, 2002 2:44 AM From: j.carreon To: David Collins Hi Everyone, Those of you who would like to order a NCBA convention t-shirt. You related that you were on your fourth attempt. It was good to hear that seasoned weavers have their frustrations, too. I am a novice weaver, and am attempting to do the rewoven braided border in Genie Jackson's book. For some reason, I'm just not getting it. I tried it several times yesterday, with no success, and took it apart before I went to bed. Again, today I tried it. After four or five times, I took the whole thing out. Tomorrow I will try again with fresh reed, as the other is worn out from my feeble attempts. Eventually, I will probably pick up the phone and call Genie for help, but I'm just like a stubborn little kid--I want to do it MYSELF! Thanks, once again, David. You are tops on my list of good guys! I was unfortunately taught to use min-wax and have also recommended it to others. OOPS! I have noticed the stiffness in my stained baskets. Is there anything I can do for these already stained baskets? Thanks again for your help... and Thanks to all of you so eager to share your knowledge. Your Awesome!! I'm always afraid I'm going to run out in the middle of a basket. Also, I don't recall reading the tips about distressing baskets. I'd be interested in those. Since I can't always afford the real things, I love making new things look old. Thanks! I have used minwax for over ten years and although I love the results, I don't doubt there may be some brittle issues to deal with down the road that I'm not aware of. I'll have to give the tung oil stain a try. I do use weavers stain also but not during the winter when I stain in my kitchen :) As for starting a basket with two weavers, I've used this technique for many years and consider it one of the best tricks of the trade. It's funny though because some teachers at conventions consider this technique (and I quote) "a shortcut that real weavers would not use". You know what? I'm a real weaver and I love the technique! Laurna, Where abouts in upstate NY are you located? Question for the group: What does everyone do with their scraps? I don't save little scraps but the long pieces I never put back where they belong all get gathered up and shoved in large plastic bins. I have 3-4 bins now of scraps and would love to get rid of them but can't bring myself to throw them out. I only occasionally fish through the bins for a piece. What does everyone else do with their not so scrappy scraps? Laurie in St. Louis, Westchester has a guild but I'm sure you'll be informed here from your post. If not, e-mail me privately and I'll dig up the contact name I have. I have posted below the teacher letter we sent out to members with the changes on it. If you have any questions please contact me at: SLTARAWOOD@aol.com You must be a member of the Association to teach or attend the convention. For membership info you may contact Sharon Sutton our membership chairperson at: sasutton@charter.net On another note, I recently took over the duties of Newsletter Editor for the WVBA. Our next newsletter goes out the end of February. If anyone has any upcoming events you would like to have listed please e-mail me with the info within the next two weeks. We also feature a web site listing. If you have a web site you want listed please e-mail it to me and I will add it to the list. We are always looking for anyone wanting to submit patterns for the newsletter. If you are a business or individual that has a web site and offers free patterns and would like some free PR e-mail me. Thanks, Sandra Lyons Coordinator Dear Prospective Teacher: The 2002 WVBA Convention will take place at the Holiday Inn in Weirton, WV on November 22-24, 2002. The 2002 Teacher Proposal form is on the reverse side of this letter. Classes will be scheduled to begin on Friday afternoon. Please make note on the proposal form if you cannot teach during a certain time period. Please make note on proposal form the number of classes you are willing to teach per day. All teachers are responsible for any equipment needed to teach the class. All teachers MUST be a member of the WVBA at the time their baskets are accepted/contracts signed for the 2002 Convention. Class size will be limited to a maximum of twelve (12) and a WVBA minimum of six (6) students. If your minimum number of students is more than six (6) please note the minimum number on the application. Instructors are required to give students printed instructions or a materials list, lengths to cut, and any other information they would need when attempting the basket at a later time. With the exception of classes where material preparation is part of the learning experience, (i.e., splitting oak, shaving ribs, etc.) kits should be prepared for the students by the instructor, with as much precutting done as possible, to allow more time for instruction in class and insuring that the students COMPLETE THEIR PROJECTS. The cost of the basket class should reflect the cost of materials and kit preparation ONLY! Teachers teaching at the 2002 Convention will receive an honorarium of $10.00 per teaching hour. You may submit as many proposals as you would like by making copies of the application form and completing one form for each basket or seminar proposed. Also, please remember if your submission is not YOUR original creation, give credit where it is due. If the basket is a copy of an original, please note that on the application. Please furnish as much information as possible regarding teaching objectives when writing basket descriptions. NOTE: Teachers submitting baskets for consideration are not involved in the selection (jury) process. We are soliciting proposals for a large number of four (4) hour classes, an equal number of six (6) hour classes, a limited number of eight (8) hour and ten (10) hour or longer classes. There have been several requests for more beginner classes. Teachers may register for classes but please be aware that regular convention registration fees will apply. A check for $3.00 PER SHIPPED BASKET (plus cost of additional insurance if necessary), a stamped self-addressed envelope, return address labels and your completed release and proposal forms must accompany your baskets. Please make checks payable to WVBA. Label each basket with your name and the name of your basket. The deadline for submitting proposals is May 25, 2002. Baskets will be juried on June 1, 2002. WVBA cannot be responsible for submitted baskets. All reasonable care will be given to each basket. Pack your basket sensibly when shipping. Ideas for packing are: crumpled paper bags, pillows made of plastic bags filled with plastic peanuts, (no loose peanuts please), old sheets or other material. Protect handles with extra padding. A "MAP" of how baskets were packed taped on the inside of the box flap is helpful when trying to repack basket. I had been using and still do weaver's stain spray with success. The reed felt much dryer after using the Minwax spray than it does with weaver's stain. There was no repair on my chair bottom because it was the vertical pieces that broke at the back where they start to bend and go around the frame of the chair seat. I had to replace the seat. No way would I use it again on reed. Sure you're out there in the Alaskan bush with twelve of your best pals. The scenery is sugar-topped trees with a pink tinted backdrop of Mt. McKinley. Alaskan mushing at it's finest but sometimes you need a little excitement. Throw some puppies into that hitch and hold on for a "thriller". Our eight pack of pups have graduated to harness and are becoming part of the team. Like adding rocket fuel to your tank you can go from zero to twenty-five mph in seconds. Well, maybe not that fast but all that youth hitting the gangline sure does make the scenery speed by faster. Not only do we have "thrillers" on the team but we have a redneck sled dog keeping pace as well. Satch the long eared, floppy-lipped, bawl mouth, coonhound loves to run with the team as long as you keep moving. We get lots of double takes from passers-by with our "southern representative" in the team. The Alaska Bush Basketry Retreat is fast approaching! The Iditarod is just a blink away and we will be there front and center for all the excitement at the start of the race. If you'd like to join the rush come on up! There's some great new photos on the website. Come look at what you'll be missing! Access: www.jchoatebasketry.com/retreat.html. Kelley Griffin, heads out on her adventure for the Yukon Quest next weekend. We currently have a bid for $850.00 on the Carved Moose Wall Pocket basket from Clada Hoskins of Lindsay, CA.
