We've got a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 697C & have been very happy with it. When I want to get the most mileage out of a color cartridge, I print a page of duplicates of my basket photo and then cut them apart to glue on each pattern (or flyer). If I need a lot of copies, I have color copies made of the multi picture page, and have the rest printed in B&W. It's less expensive than having each pattern require its own color copy. Kristin Monastyrski - My favorite rib glue is Elmer's Squees-N-Caulk, the one that dries clear. It sets rapidly and holds well, and any excess can be easily removed with the tip of a sharp knife. Connie Hughes - Thanks for sharing your star with us. May your soldier come safely home. Jill in Orlando - I'm sorry I didn't read this WW in time to have you contact me on your trip to Kansas City. Thanks for sharing it with us. Too bad you didn't have a flyswatter handy though. Karen in Honolulu - Please keep in mind that my suggestion is entirely off the wall and has no basis in personal experience. That said, I would suggest you strive for some variety in what you make to sell. Do a few expensive major effort baskets to show off what you can do, whether they sell or not. Do both mid-range and "economical" ones. If you make more than you can sell at the first show, you will at least have a lot of holiday gifts on hand, or stock for the nest show. You may be surprised at what sells! (Hope everything went well for you.) If so, please ignore them. I will go through all the issues since the last time I posted and try not to be redundant. This was originally written on September 24th, but I have just done some editing as it is now December 11th and I didn't send it while it was fresh. Tony - May your future birthdays be brightened by the unity and strength our country displays in coping with this year's terrorist attacks. Bren Miller - David's reprint of a call for disaster aid was simply that. If you get a lot of email, you had probably already seen it at least once before; I'd seen it several times before it appeared in WW. We'd all be in snits if we got critical of every disaster-related post that came out, not to mention all the repeats as they spread and echo across the entire world wide web. As has been said before, if you don't like the tone of something you read here, you are always free to delete it. There have been a number of things posted to my address with which I disagreed in one way or another, but many of them were merely the immediate venting of the frustrations so many of us felt over the September attacks and current situation. Now that I think of it, yours was one of those. I hope you tried to not take some of the angry responses too personally. Hang in there. United we stand. Blessed Be. Ann Marie Olsen :-) - Well said. I've resigned myself somewhat to the fact that there will always be some new Internet users out there who take a while to learn to weed out the hoaxes and urban legends. Posts like yours can help them learn. (As above, this information is not new to veteran users.) Norma - I'm sure you will have seen by now that you were not alone in your concerns. IBA's convention 3 years ago was the first out of state convention that I attended - and it was wonderful! The volunteers, weavers and teachers were kind, pleasant and interesting. I spent all of my time at the hotel immersed in "Things Basketry" and came away with beautiful baskets, too many purchases, new friends and lots of motivation and ideas! Just what I think a convention should be! I have volunteered during the days of the IBA conventions and have and am currently chairing areas for Missouri's conventions. My background is in group travel - most of which has been the management of very large, complicated, international trips. I can appreciate the efforts that go into negotiating hotel contracts, organizing events & activities, registration desks, etc. I therefore have all the respect in the world for those that take the time to volunteer - be it the state guild boards or the conventions. Managing these volunteer positions along with a career, family and other aspects of life, which demand our time and energy, requires long hours, patience and dedication. I feel that if one has a complaint about the way something is handled, then that person should volunteer to manage that area the next year! I for one want to express my sincere thanks to Lynn, Rhonda, Dollie and all those that make these guilds and conventions a possibility for the weaving community. I'm pretty sure I speak for many out there that do appreciate the hard work that goes into to pulling these wonderful conventions off year after year! Thank you :) Laurie Harper St. Lou, MO %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Re: [weaverswords] "Weavers Words" V. 5 I. 32 Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2001 14:49:27 -0500 From: "bonnie hauser" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com Hi, I had emailed my address to be a part of the Dec. I am a newbie have had only one class and attended one weave in. I am afraid I've gone a little overboard in singing up for classes for our upcoming convention. My question is I am sure I can handle the beginner levels, but what about the "all levels"? I tried to sign up for the ones I felt like I could handle, but I want to learn new things too. AM I OVER MY HEAD? I really enjoy WW Thanks to all who contribute. Bonnie %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaver's Words Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2001 8:28 AM From: Joy Moody - Basketmaker To: davidc@iei.net FOND MEMORIES: Whew! That was quite a list of responses to the IBA "happenings". Thanks to the President & others who shared information by way of response to concerns expressed. It sounds like some serious matters are at hand, and I trust the Board will continue to do whatever is necessary to secure the property of the members, &/or recover damages on their behalf. I agree with the writer who referred to a "need to know" basis for detailed information & discussion. Seems to me the original complainer has chosen the wrong forum in which to open conversation. Not all of us are IBA members, and while we may be interested in the general happenings of the conventions etc., we do not need to hear the specifics of complaints, which obviously need to be discussed with the people concerned. Sideways conversations won't help anything. I have fond memories of when this list (Weaver's Words & it's predecessors) were chuck full of enthusiastic basket makers who shared information, ideas & technical knowledge about all aspects of making baskets. Most of those folks have disappeared to parts unknown, preferring, we presume, a more positive forum. Perhaps for 2002 we can each re-commit to sharing our love of basketry by supporting each other's passion, passing on hard earned knowledge of skills, techniques, material preparation, cultural origins of designs, suppliers & such. If any of those who've disappeared happen to be "lurking" I call on you to come out & revive Weaver's Words, en mass!!!! Does anyone know where I can find instructive details on the double woven baskets done by the Tara Humara? Like how to figure out how to weave them?! Amazing, as I look at the few in my collection. It was the first time I attended the IBA Convention, but I had attended one other basket convention and several work-related conventions before that. I was very impressed by the IBA Convention. It was so well organized and everyone I met was really nice. There was so much to do, see and buy; I went home happy, exhausted and inspired. I didn't volunteer last year because I was a "first-timer" but I am planning to volunteer to help with something this year. In spite of the recent discussions about problems with the IBA, I am looking forward to the convention and I truly appreciate the time and hard work that the board members and convention coordinators and others put in year round to make this wonderful basket vacation possible for me and others. Every organization has to get thru bad times and I hope we will all be able to put these problems behind us. I think the convention book I recently received is beautiful and I would never have guessed that it had to be a rush job. I am going to trust the board; every indication is that they are handling the situation very professionally and with the best interests of the organization as their guide. Now I am going to concentrate my efforts on choosing classes and getting my registration in on time. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Wood Scraper Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2001 4:38 AM From: Dianne Walbeck To: 'Weaver's Words' I am looking for a wood scraper. It looks like an oversized razor and I have seen it pictured in Suzanne Moore's basket catalog but I have been told that it is no longer sold. I REALLLY want one and any ideas on where to get one would be great. I have seen some weavers with a paint scraper but then again I am overseas and my access to a Home Depot or Lowe's in non existent. We will be back in Michigan in June 2002, but I don't think I can wait any longer. I have an Eric Taylor kit I picked up at the AMB and I would like to use the scraper for that but I also want it to help shave down my smaller flat oval reeds for my overlaps. Could you please give us the information on the basketry book you got? (Title, Author, Publisher, language) Ingrid Quick - I often find wooden beads around the December holiday season in strings meant for use as ornaments on Christmas trees. I also watch yard sales and thrift stores for beaded truck seat covers that can be taken apart. The beads are nice and big, but not really what I'd call long. Sometimes old jewelry has interesting beads. One option might be to make your own long beads. They can be easily done from plastic "clay", paper mache', potters clay (which has to be fired, of course), or lengths of willow twigs. Another highly versatile method is to cut long triangles of wallpaper (or other flexible material - such as leather, imitation leather, magazine pages, gift wrap, heavy ribbon, etc...) and wrap them around a knitting needle or piece of round reed (apply glue to the back side to hold the roll in place). These can be made in several shapes, depending on the taper of the triangle and the thickness of your material. A rectangle will yield a plain cylindrical bead. You can add a clear finish if desired. Dee M Thanks for the tip about "Bubble Jet Set". ~Sheri Lewis - I'm sorry to hear about the loss of basketpatterns.com. I was just thinking about submitting a new series of patterns. Oh, well. Hope you find something to do that will be even better for you. Susi Nuss - Wow! What a great list of star sites! Thanks. Although I'm really sorry that about.com dropped the basketry category, it's heartening to know that you are still finding and posting great basketry information. Hope to see you again one of these days at an NBO function. Lois Keener - You might be able to help the odor problem on your potato basket by daubing the affected area with a paste of baking soda and water. Let it sit for several hours and then brush (or rinse) it off. If that doesn't help, check a pet supply store for one of the odor killing solutions they carry. Nancy in Glen Arm - Anne Coleman has several excellent patterns with the 'feather' or 'herringbone' pattern. Her email address is . Tell her Bert sent you. Her classes are great fun too! Dianne Walbeck - If you have access to BIZ laundry detergent, put your antlers to soak in a bucket of water with BIZ. It contains an enzyme and is sometimes used by museums and archeologists to clean animal bones for study specimens or display. If that is not available you can try their old method - soak in a bucket of water into which you have spit saliva. They usually leave the bucket outdoors in a warm place. You may want to put a lid on it to keep live critters out. The process might be speedier if you heat the container on a hot plate or camp stove. That would require a metal bucket, of course. If you want to get rid of excess skull bone, try a coping saw or an electric grinder. Be sure to wear a dust mask to protect your lungs from the bone dust. He was giving away pieces that weren't of canoe quality. The few times I've seen it for sale, it was very expensive. Maybe you should try to find someone for a local materials swap. Where do you live, and what good materials grow in your area? Tony - This is my first year belonging to the Indiana guild. Their convention catalog came out a couple of weeks ago. I had submitted to teach, but none of my baskets were selected. Don't know if I'll get to the convention. Indiana is the first basketry convention I ever heard of, so it is high on my list of ones to go to out of state. I also missed the renewal time for Missouri, but got signed up recently. I've received a copy of the directory, but am not in it. The MO convention book isn't out yet as far as I know. Hope your holiday sales have gone well. Deb Mather - Household ammonia will kill the mildew on a basket, but won't get rid of the black spots. Linda Lacy Piziks - I have used the bark of Eastern Red Cedar. At the time I had never woven with Western Red Cedar (which is another species entirely). In both cases, it's the inner bark that is used for weaving. I was told by a weaver from the northwestern US that the Native Americans would soak the bark in saltwater to reduce the gumminess of the sap. I believe once I get the hang of splitting it to the right thickness, the local cedar here will perform a lot like the northwestern type.
