It is so very important to not only give the author credit, but payment for their hard work in designing and writing these patterns whether or not they have an official copywrite. For the sake of keeping basketry professional, please, never copy a pattern. I know that many people make slight changes in a pattern and then call it their own. I don't think that this is very ethical although it may be legal. My feeling is that unless the pattern is drastically altered, it should not be taken as one's own. Even then, the polite thing to do is give the original author credit for inspiring your adaptation. I'd love to hear more opinions/advice on this issue. Example: What do you do when the pattern is in a book? Do you require the students to purchase the book? Do you get the author's permission to copy? I've avoided using patterns from books because of this dilemma. Eileen Mirsberger East Troy Basketry 2082 Church St. P.O. Hit each spot of mildew. You may want to take some # 4 round scraps and use them as a spacer between the crosses where the spokes intersect as the bleach will "bleed" into the dyed spokes if you are not careful. When you are sure you have hit all the mildew. Rinse your basket with cold water and let it dry with the spacers in place. You may want to re-wet it later with the spacers out to regain the nice flat bottom. This method worked with a rectangular base basket. A round spoked basket will obviously be harder to separate the colored layers from the natural as you get in close. That is what the weird, repetitive "softly fallen needles..." message was in the last volume. I have just cleaned my machine of W32.Magistr.39921@mm, a virus and worm, which infects email files. It takes snippets of word documents on your machine, and generates character strings, which seem to almost make sense, sending them to people in your address book. It also attaches a virus, which has extensions named .com, .exe, .pif, or .bat. It also sometimes attaches .gifs to emails. There is no chance that you have received this virus through Weavers Words, as the messages in this tome are filtered through Yahoo, and this list is set not to receive attachments. There is a chance, however, that David has been infected, if he opened the attachment to the email. If you are also in David's personal address book, and he has been infected, you could receive the virus in a message from him, however. I apologize. I thought I had myself covered on this. I did send out a warning to everyone in my address book, including David, about this. He replied to the message, asking if it was for Weaver's Words. I suppose the virus-bearing message had already just slipped through. I did not think to ask him to check and see if a message bearing the virus had already been posted to his next issue. If you do not have an antivirus program, you may want to visit www.sarc.com, and run a "free virus scan", which is on the lower portion of the page. This is how I found and cleaned 28 infected files from my machine. So sorry! Take a look at this site: http://www3.ca.com/Virus/Virus.asp?ID=9700 It says the following: "This hoax is warning you about a virus that is activated if you read a message with the subject "It Takes Guts to Say 'Jesus.'" It encourages you to send this letter out to as many people you can, saying "This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it." "The text on this page is part of a hoax and is not a legitimate warning. We present it here to help you identify any hoax messages that you receive. Please note that hoaxes often have several variations in circulation, so you may receive a hoax message that is similar, but not identical to the message below." I am the IBA Vice President. I have been an IBA member since 1993. The best way to really find out what an organization is really about is to join and come to convention. IBA is 1000+ members strong. The association is over 10 years old and every year the conventions just get better and better. Our organization is totally operated by Volunteers. When you are dealing with a group our size, responsibility is a priority. Most of the larger state associations suffer growing pains time from time and have in the past experienced various problems that needed attention. This year IBA had a few members that volunteered to assist in coordinating the 2003 convention. Our association like many others have convention guidelines and specific programs to follow that help guarantee the success of a convention our size. These few members, for whatever reason, refused to follow the guidelines and programs set in place and allowed IBA property to be destroyed, therefore, the board had to take control of the situation for the sake of the association's convention and financial responsibility. The IBA Board reviewed the facts, discussed the situation and voted to remedy the situation. Sometimes, decisions that are made and actions that must be done are not always the most popular. And from experience the naysayers usually have the loudest voices. These few members have told their sad tale to many and are disappointed that they are not getting the support they thought they would have gained. The out pour of support from teachers, volunteers and hundreds of members supporting the boards actions reconfirms the position the board took. The IBA Board would be glad to answer any questions regarding this situation. The board has nothing to hide and are proud to represent the association. Volunteers are very important to our organization; they do ALL of the work. Each volunteer is responsible for specific duties and no matter how big or small their responsibility, it is important that they follow through. The association depends on them. IBA is very thankful for all of the hardworking volunteers that step forward each year to help make convention a success. The few bad apples that you are referring to are no longer members of the association. Please give IBA a chance. Join, come and enjoy and see for yourself. Please email me if you have any further questions. I really don't feel this is the proper forum to discuss this situation without knowing the true facts. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Stuff Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 5:59 PM From: Joanne Howard To: David Collins Hi All, It has been awhile. I hope every one is getting back to as normal as possible. I just received two Robin Taylor Daugherty videos in the mail. I bought them from someone on e bay. I haven't watched them yet but was curious to know if anyone else sells them. These were produced by Victorian Video Productions. I wasn't aware that Robin had videos for sale. Anyone know of others? Remi- I do have a piece of advice and insight for you. Don't pay attention to rumors. Judge the situation yourself and judge others as you see them. Not by what other people think of them or of what someone else may perceive is going on. Anywhere for that matter. Someone elses' discarded friend could be your next perfect weaving buddy. Not all people like the same cup of tea. I am sure there are many basket folks in Indiana that would be great weaving buddies. Go in with an open mind and you will make friends ten fold. Looking forward to NC this year. I know it will be a fun trip. Off To Work... Aloha, Joanne %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: F.Y.I. I have the itch to bake, sing and decorate everything in my house. I am currently sucking on a candy cane, one of the many I purchased to give out at my table at tomorrow's craft fair. I really enjoy these craft fairs. I feel that this particular one is the best because the local community is allowed onto the base and it is a mixing of cultures. It is usually one of the busiest craft fairs and this one is expected to be much more busier than last year. Last year I did not even get to sit down until after 4PM and the fair opened at 9AM. I am one of just a few who sell their baskets and the one who many remember. My table is usually filled and overflowing onto the floor. I weave all year for this craft fair. Since my baskets are mostly reed and simple utilitarian I am able to weave a few baskets a week. This is because my husband is either working late or he has school, so I need something to do besides watch TV and get lonely. I have also volunteered to participate in a local off base craft fair 5 days from now. I am not too sure what it will be like but to be invited to it is an honor, and they also waived any table fees. They are advertising that there will be American vendors present. I will definitely let everyone know how they turn out. The craft fairs are so very different here than back in the USA. Now for my antler question. I have two antlers I am currently cleaning up and preparing to weave a few baskets. These antlers are very dirty and bloody. My father-in-law and his family are big hunters and they were just going to toss these antlers out because they were not worth saving. Well you can guess how long it took me to let them know I wanted them!!! I had just taken an antler basket class at the AMB convention and learned how to drill the hole. I really enjoyed the class and now that I have two new antlers to weave with I am itching to get started. I was told to spray them down with kitchen cleaner and let them sit for a few hours to soften up the dirt and blood. I have used steel wool and a little toothbrush to clean them but I still have some hard to get at bloody spots and a few tufts of fur in places. The fur is at the base of the antler where they cut them off. They were cut off behind the bumpy area next to the skull so they look like they were shed naturally. So all you wise weavers out there who have experience in cleaning antlers, is there any special trick or should I stick with the scrubbing and elbow grease? Warm wishes form sunny Okinawa Japan Dianne Walbeck %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% That's All For Now Folks.
