Sent: Friday, November 16, 2001 2:42 PM From: Tony Stubblefield To: David Collins/Weavers Words Mary - about my show prep - I am exhibiting at an arts and crafts fair hosted at a local private prep school here in St. Louis, John Burroughs School. It is a pretty exclusive school so hopefully I will do well. By the time the next WW comes out I should have an update on how things went. I have about 35 baskets to sell ranging from Shaker brown ash baskets to Nantucket's to a few reed-ribbed baskets. This is the most baskets I have had to sell at one time in my life and it took me about 6 months to get these together. Usually I am happy if I can have 3 ready for the holiday season so any left over from the show will be a big bonus for Christmas sales. Luanne - about the quality of WW - Things have been pretty quite lately. I think everyone has been having a busy summer and then with all the mess going on in the world nobody has been that enthusiastic about hobbies and such. I know these statements are true for me. If I didn't have a show coming up I am sure I wouldn't have been weaving nearly as much. I also usually keep up much better with all the email I get from my website, but in that too I am unmotivated. I think things will hopefully turn around soon with everything. About craft sales - I think people are really looking to staying around the home more and are doing more "nesting" which equates to buying "homey" type items to decorate with. I know my mother's craft supply store has been doing increased business this year and my father's furniture building has been going like gangbusters. I heard the other day on the news that DVD and video sales were through the roof. People are just hanging out with family more. I guess that isn't such a bad side effect off all the trouble in the world. As you all may remember me saying I have a terrible time with renewing my guild memberships. I always seem to miss the renewal form at the back of the newsletters as ever issue seems to have some sort of application form. Well this year I am for sure a member of Indiana (I missed last year), but I don't think I am for Missouri (even though I am on the 2002 convention committee) and I am not sure about North Carolina (I was last year). Anyway I was wondering has anyone received any convention information about Indiana or North Carolina yet? I thought I had gotten the info on NC by the beginning of November last year. Also does anyone know what is up with NC's website? I can no longer access it. Well, I need to go get my sales pads and stuff together for the show this weekend. It will become very brittle if left this way. I have not had any luck uncurling it if it has been left more than 6 mo or so. This becomes great fire starter for my wood stove. On birch that I have harvested, I make a press out of plywood and wing nuts and press the stack flat. I tend to alternate the layers so they curl into one another and then tighten them down. On birch that I have had left over from other teacher's classes, I have found that gentle heat seems to work the best. One teacher used a hot plate on high. He would move the birch back and forth over the heat (about 4-6" away from the burner), testing it as he went when it felt like it would move he would bend the tight corners into the Matooks that we were making. Since Birch is water proof (hence their use in canoes) soaking it will have little effect. I think the oil will change the color and may not help much. Experiment with smaller pieces and see where it goes. I continue to read WW but haven't written lately. Two points of interest: * There is a marvelous new book out that I just saw at Borders tonight: THE ART OF BASKETRY- traditional basketry from around the world by Byran Sentance, Thames & Hudson, 2001, ISBN 0-500-51048. It is 215 pages with 833 illustrations & color photos. I'd say it runs in the same league with the best broad-based identification books I've seen so far. * Secondly, The Maine Craft Association is reincarnating its MCA Workshop Weekend held at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts here in Maine, May 16-19, 2002. Nancy Moore Bess is teaching "Japanese Packages as Vessel", using natural materials of paper, bamboo, walnuts linen, garlic, rattan, chili peppers, raffia, & seagrass. The Antler Skep is one of the baskets recently submitted to the Tennessee Basketry Convention. If selected, this class may soon be available to those attending this event to learn. See what happens when you sit in the dark and wait for snow? The only thing running around here is my mind and puppies on the prowl. I would appreciate any suggestions you have pertaining to this matter. I own a craft store in Kennewick, Washington and we are going to be carrying basket weaving supplies starting in December. Most of us in this area have taken classes from one particular person and she has always included the pattern in the class, but it could also be purchases separately from her. We just assumed they were her own patterns but after being on several weaving sites recently, we're not sure that they were totally her idea. She has since quit teaching and we are planning on filling the void here at the store. Sooooooooo...what is the rule on patterns, or is there even one? Do people make a small adjustment and then call it their own? We will be teaching classes and we want to make sure that we do it the right way. We do want to include the pattern with the class so if they want to make another one, they will have the pattern. We heard of someone in another city who taught classes and used a pattern from a well-known weaver but didn't give the pattern out. We don't want todo this either. Please e-mail me with your thoughts. Thanks! Usually they are questions for which I too would enjoy hearing the various solutions. So to the person who asked about birch bark, I'll respond what when I made a birch bark container. My teacher, Jim Miller, recommended heat -which is what the 1st nation people probably used. Water is often so cold in the spring when the bark is removed from the tree. A small electric burner would work for you project I am thinking. You can use warm water, but I think the heat method is better. A variety of fibers and dyed reed - to embellish your basket and assist you in making your signature statement. What could be meditative and creative at the same time? It won't be long before you'll be saying "poof" here's my basket. Whose up for a freebie? Not only will you receive the above materials but I'll throw in the pattern for the Antler Wall Pocket for free. And as long as we're on a roll how about a little discount as well? It has been a while since I have sent anything in to Weavers Words. Mainly because I was in the middle of planning a move and then executing it. I did hear once I got back among the living that there was some concerns among the teachers who were selected for the convention regarding the submission of patterns along with their contracts. We were finding that some contracts were coming back without the patterns as requested. This has been a tradition of the MBG where the patterns are then put into a book and raffled off at the convention. I would like to apologize for any misunderstanding that there may have been but we were trying to get as many in initially as there are 80 teachers and over 100 classes. We felt that we needed to be able to get as many of the patterns with the contracts to make things simpler. I understand that there was concern with the letter that was sent as it was on legal stationary. Our Teachers Contracts Chair is an attorney and happened to use her letterhead. She didn't use it to cause any added ramification. She was just trying to make sure she got not only the contracts but also the patterns. I understand that some of the patterns are not written. If that is the case we ask that you let us know and you think that it would be ready. We did hear from one teacher that she does not have patterns. I did hear that someone thought I had just packed my bags and was gone. Well, that is true, I moved to Sunny Sedona and it was something that my husband had been planning for some time. It just so happened that we made the move the first of November. As with any move telephones are disconnected and because we were moving out of state there was no forwarding number. My new telephone number is 928-284-1375 and my fax is 928-284-2253. My E-mail address remained the same: SEAlbrecht@aol.com. My address is 65 Rim Trail Drive, Sedona, Arizona 86351-7307. I was out of communication while we drove to Sedona which is a three-day trek and then for some time while we waited for the movers and got everything hooked up. So to dispel any concerns about the convention-it is still in the works. The various chairs are doing what they need to do to make sure we can again bring all our friends together to learn and exchange ideas. If any of the teachers would like to talk about this matter further I hope they will call me. As for Sedona, the weather is great. We are looking forward to getting involved with the creative community. I will be teaching some basket classes at the Sedona Arts Center next semester as well as submitting to there next juried show. My husband and I are hoping to be able to rent a space in the Art Mart so that we can sell our work (he is a photographer). We are also talking with the Director of Education at the Art Center about offering a week retreat, which would include basket weaving and tourist activities. I have already made contact with a Hopi basket weaver about teaching and she is interested. I will keep you posted. We are looking at September time frame but I need to find out when the various conventions are so that we do not interfere with each other. If anyone knows of conventions that are currently planned for the month of September please let me know. That's all I have from Sunny Sedona!
