I think my Minwax mistake was in using Polyshades. Stain and polyurethane. Have learned my lesson and will follow your advice on spraying on the polyurethane over stain. Thanks. BTW, what show are you prepping for? Eileen of East Troy: Thanks for the Christmas colors formula. Much appreciated. Does anyone have any reports of the effect of current conditions on basket sales? Mary Hooper %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Basket Swap Sent: Wednesday, November 07, 2001 9:44 PM From: Gary Dunham To: David Hi! I, too, was wondering about a basket swap. I know that I have been in on a secret sister exchange for quilting and some people are leery about receiving packages from people they don't know. Actually, my package from my quilting secret sister was opened by the post office because it was "bulky" and an unusual shape. Unfortunately, after they opened it, they really didn't reseal it, so who knows if I received everything I was supposed to. But back to the basket swap. How does everyone feel about it now that we are at war? Is there one going on that I missed? Your input is appreciated! Thanks, Cindy in Northern Illinois Where we are having a wonderful Indian Summer %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Weaver's Words Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2001 1:23 PM From: Cooper, Luanne To: 'davidc@iei.net' David - First of all, thanks for going to such great lengths to sending out this newsletter. I was a subscriber a couple of years ago and just came back. I hate to say this, but it was so much more interesting a couple of years ago. It seems to me that there are a lot of ladies out there that are using this publication as a way to gripe or keep up on one another's ailments. Couldn't we try to stick to baskets and related topics to basket making??? %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Help! Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2001 11:18 AM From: The Ingrams To: David Collins (E-mail) David and WW'ers, I am confused. Are we no longer able to access all those great pictures, addresses, links, etc. From WW that we used to be able to? I am computer illiterate, so please bear with me. I cannot seem to find anything but old issues of WW. Am I missing an address, or does it no longer exist? Mary Hooper: I have lost your address! Can you please tell me how you make acorn stain and what it looks like? I have acorns everywhere, and would love to make a new batch of stain. Thanks a lot! In case Mary doesn't read this one--if anyone has her address, I'd appreciate it if you'd send it to me. Thanks! My sweet pup was scheduled for a morning long senior wellness checkup and I had to spend the morning with a dog who wanted to be anyplace but at the vets. The baking soda worked on the stinko basket, so thanks big time to everyone who wrote and suggested I use it. Why I didn*t think of it I don*t know--must have been craft fair stress clouding my brain. I am storing only potatoes in the basket--no more onions and this months REAL SIMPLE magazine has an article on how to store everything in your fridge and tells what not to store with what. And to think, I*ve just been chucking it in and shutting the door. My first fair of the year was Saturday the 3rd and though I was worried, I shouldn*t have been. It was one of the best fairs I*ve done so far. I sold not only baskets, but primitive wood designs I*d cut out with my saw. I have 4 more smaller shows to do between now and Christmas and the stress has disappeared. Hope everyone is well. Lois (who already has tickets to the first showing of the Harry Potter movie on the 16th--and cannot wait!) %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: Working With Birch Bark Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 21:30:26 -0800 (PST) From: [Send an Instant Message] "Char Braun" To: weaverswords-owner@yahoogroups.com The weather here in Wisconsin is still just gorgeous...at least it was until I said that!! I would like to make a couple of vessels out of birch bark for a display of Native American baskets that my son's 5th grade project. I taught 24 kids to weave a simple basket! Well, what they wove wasn't authentic but gave the students some idea of what challenges there were before Rubbermaid and fishing poles, etc. I've read a few things about working with bark. One says to steam the bark to make it pliable, another says to brush on mink oil and let it soak in until pliable. Any words of wisdom? Thanks! I have made several in the past and used some type of super glue. Only thing I might warn anyone about is the fact that some glues prohibit stain from being absorbed. If you are careful, this isn't a problem. I have also stained the pieces before I made the snowflake. I have painted them, too, and haven't had any problems with that. Small ones make beautiful package tie-ons! I'm all for free speech but I love Weavers Words because of the basket related information and the community of basket makers who participate. Thank you to all who continue to contribute useful, interesting information to make weaving easier and more pleasurable for everyone. I wish I had a wealth of knowledge to share... give me a few years! Sign ups will be from now until November 24th. Now I am not sure how busy everyone will be with Christmas weaving so I hope this isn't a bad idea starting one now, but should we make the send off date Say December 20th that way it would be like a Christmas gift. I hope this is an okay idea. If not I will find out I am sure. I need names, addresses, phone numbers, emails and color preferences. Let me know whether you want a true swap or a scramble. Majority will rule. And I will post that information after sign ups are over. Thank you and if I forgot anything let me know. However, it was a little cold for us being from Arizona. I met a woman in my Fish class with and I told her I would send her some information about a catalog. I think her name is Charlene, but am not sure. Anyway, if she is reading this or one of her friends is, the catalog with the mug boss (the holder that fits a mug to hold tools) is in the Duluth Trading Co. catalog, www.duluthtrading.com, 1-800-505-8888. David, I hope your Thanksgiving is fab. Ok, everyone!!! We have a winner with the latest contest. It is...are you in suspense yet? It is Juanita Kenner! Congrats to her. The name for the new basket is..."Oval and oval again". We decided that since not everyone would make this basket in the plum color, the oval and oval again was the most appropriate. We are getting ready to start another contest. We are taking comments from you guys on whether you want another 'name that basket' contest or a different type. We have one of each in mind, so let us know. Even if you don't care, tell us that too. Juanita your prize will be sent out on Monday, so watch for a box! We have updated the site with a new newsletter and a big, big, big reed sale! It is time to stock up. Visit us and see. I'll bet your size is on sale. New stuff on the sales item page and your last chance to get the fall free pattern as I will be changing it soon too. Take care and enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday! You know-- to hold on the rim. Home Depot didn't have them. I had black walnut stain stored in a large Folgers coffee can (guess it doesn't matter which brand!) I reached for it and my finger went thru the side of the can. Lucky, the stain was low in the can. It had eaten the side of the can. Powerful stuff. Guess I better find another storage can. My name is Vanessa Allen and I was suppose to participate in the Cities of America pageant taking place in Orlando, Florida this December. Due to the September 11 tragedy, I have decided not to go, but I had already had a raffle started. I am raffling off an Heirloom Cradle, a Waxed Linen Basket, and a Flag Mail Basket. My mom had donated these baskets she made to help me raise money to go to the pageant. Since you are basket makers, I thought that you would be interested in winning one of these baskets, and helping me raise money for local charities. The drawing will take place on November 17, 2001 and tickets are $5.00 a piece. You can send a check to: Vanessa Allen, Star Route Box 160, Lowville, NY 13367, or if you have any questions, or interested in getting a ticket, you can email my mom at basketry@gisco.net. You would have heard the saying, " and don't be fiddle fartin' around" accompany the "let's get this house cleaned up" chore list issued by my Mother. A generation later, I am still "fiddle fartin' around" on Saturday mornings but this time with a violin in my hand. There are some that can take a violin and make it a joyous sound to be heard. I, unfortunately, am not one of those. My instructor tells me that my technique resembles something similar to wringing a chicken's neck. I tell her that I'm having trouble separating my hold on the dog sled (aka a death grip) with the hold on the violin. The music that results could be categorized as a good rendition of Irish cat-in-the-dryer. I guess I'll just have to keep "fiddle fartin' around" awhile longer. The new class schedule for 2002 is now posted on the J. Choate Basketry site. If you would like to check it out: www.jchoatebasketry.com/classes.html will get you there. There are always new classes added to the site as they become confirmed. If your group would like to be added to next summers tour let me know and we'll get you lined out. There are still openings in the Alaska Bush Basketry Retreats for 2002. If Alaska calls your name and your ready to heed the call we'll get you headed north in no time. Until we meet on the trail... Mamye's was an entry re. my mother for a family tree my cousin is compiling (sent to him several months ago), and Dale's was directions for using Synthrapol and Retayne in dye baths which I had copied from Weaver's Word probably in the early spring and don't recall sending to anyone. The most interesting fact about this situation is that all of our addresses and messages were lost just under a month ago when the computer froze up, and our friend Steve helped us to reboot. I thought I had saved everything on disk, but could only open My Documents. Both of the above messages I had previously saved to My Documents and they are still there. Anyway, I am writing just in case the computer decides others of you need family histories or basketry material or workshop information! Please let me know if such comes your way. I will hope to get to the bottom of this. Incidentally, I have tried to discover if it could be a virus - my Virus Scan says we are clear, and the Virus Information Library does not contain information about this kind of situation.
