Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2001 8:15 PM From: Elaine Bidstrup To: David Collins Weavers Words Dear David And All, I received a message very much like the one posted in the latest WW by Laura Katsis. The substance of the boyfriend from Afghanistan, his leaving, warnings, etc. were the same, but it was forwarded as being originally from the mother of the girl whose boyfriend was from Afghanistan. HOAX? TRUTH? WHO KNOWS THESE DAYS, but . . . Is it a true warning? Is it some 'crazy' getting their satisfaction by scaring everyone? Is it a 'hoax' planted by a terrorist to try to further disrupt our economy? At first the anthrax was attributed to someone out to get publicly or satisfy their own psychotic/neurotic/schizophrenic/power needs? As of today (10/18) no one is saying for sure that it is terrorist related. (Remember the tainted Tylenol several years ago? It resulted in 1) more childproof caps, 2) increased packaging which uses more resources, 3) added expense, 4) (possible) deterrent to copy-cat crimes. Is this the same?) After all, how many people frequent malls on Halloween? Are we to have metal detectors at malls? Are we to be searched each time we enter the mall (as well as going through 'detectors' when we leave to see if we're shop lifting?) I'm sure I sound a bit paranoid myself, but I've lived overseas and know how easily freedoms we take for granted can be taken away in the guise of 'protecting us.' Do we need precautions at this time? Definitely!! Am I worried about my workplace (school) being bombed? Not really - I don't think a school for the blind is a likely target. Am I worried about anthrax or smallpox? I'm throwing out more 'junk' mail unopened. (This has cured me of feeling obligated to read everything, just because some company paid for a stamp to send it to me.) I'm worried that my daughter has not been inoculated against smallpox and anxiously await to hear that the vaccine will be made available. Am I worried that all this anxiety, worry, and fear is causing problems in individual lives, education, business, and health? YES!! My doctor told me that all of her patients' blood pressures have been up since Sept. 11. I know that the problems my students have had (especially those relating to future plans, self-esteem, trust, and sexual issues) have increased and that the entire staff is on edge. Enough raving - one other thing I really miss is the time to relax and WEAVE. Elaine %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Subject: This And That Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2001 10:37 PM From: Tony Stubblefield To: David Collins/Weavers Words Cc: Lois - about your stinky basket - Have you tried baking soda? It couldn't hurt to give it a shot. I would really pile it on the spot and then after a few days just vacuum the excess away. If it helps with onion smells in the fridge, maybe it will help in a basket too. Let us know how you come along. I keep forgetting to tell everybody about this great new gadget I got when I was down in Oriental, NC. It is called a "Basketmaker's Weaving Stand" or "Joyner's Jig". It is a adjustable weaving stand for doing mold weaving (i.e. Nantucket or Shakers). It unfolds to stand on the floor and adjust to whatever height you like to work and adjusts to whatever angle you want your mold. I was at first kind of skeptical, but once I borrowed one to take to my hotel room I was hooked. I have allsorts of weaving stands to attach to my worktable and I even have a lap stand, but this one is great. You can comfortably sit in the living room, front porch, yard or wherever and weave without needing a table or something to clamp your stand too. It is sturdy, constructed of steel, I think, but weighs only 11 lbs and is nicely balanced with a built-in carrying handle and stable enough to accommodate even really big molds. If you are interested in receiving a brochure, contact Donald R. Joyner, 16 Morgan Blvd., PO Box 666, Arden, NC 28704. The stand isn't cheap, but is well worth the money if you do Nantucket's or Shakers. Also, someone asked a while back about Eric Taylor and how you could find out where he was teaching. Well, I finally remembered to look up his address. He is at 13A High St., Danbury NH 03230 and his email is ejtaylor@mac.com. I am sure he will start traveling to teach again in the spring and I bet he will be at some of the upcoming conventions. If you see him, tell him "Tony says hi." Well, I have to get ready for a class I am teaching this weekend. I have enough ready for the class, but I always like to have extras "just incase" and I have starting selling supply kits of the classes that I teach. I don't want to start mail ordering or anything, but while I am putting materials together it is just as easy for me to make a few extra to have at the end of class. Hope everyone is doing well. Take care and keep on living your lives. I haven't posted in a while, but I'm still here. There's been a lot of discussion about printing on fabric lately and I wanted to share an idea. Check out your local library for books on quilting or fabric crafts. There are books out there explaining how to print on fabric from your home computer. I belong to a book club for craft books and just recently saw a book on photo quilts. I don't remember the name, but check out your library. Another suggestion is to ask around and quilt stores and or craft shops in the area. It would be a shame if someone put all that work into making a keepsake quilt, only to have pictures wash away should the quilt ever need to be washed. Sheri - I'm sorry to hear that your services are no longer needed at basketpatterns.com. You've done a wonderful job with their web site. I hope you're able to look forward to the opportunities that await you. Lois - while I can't help you with the nasty smell in your bargain basket, Ido have a suggestion regarding storing your potatoes and onions. Its quite common to store these veggies together, it's really the worst you can do. I'm a bit short on details here, but I do know that one of them emits a gas as it ripens, and this gas causes the other veggie to rot quicker. Also, potatoes tend to absorb flavors easily so should not be stored with apples, or other fruit or veggies. I know you all are going to run and move your potatoes and onions to different spaces now! (That's it for my helpful hints for today!) As for craft fairs and the economy - I'm hoping that everyone will take Pres. Bush up on the advice to go out and spend, or go on that vacation. I had a craft show on Oct 6, and I did pretty good. There were a lot of shoppers, and the few other people I spoke with at the show also did OK. I was really dreading the show, but was pleasantly surprised. Hopefully that will hold through the end of the year at least. If nothing else, maybe people are more into the "Made in the USA" or "Made locally" theme and would rather purchase a handmade gift instead of something imported. I have another show this weekend as well, last year I did well at this same show, so we'll see how this year compares. Only time will tell. To everyone heading off to Michigan, make sure you let us know all about it. Is it really as overwhelming as I've heard? And I hope they were able to get the volunteers they need. Without volunteers, these conventions wouldn't exist, so keep that in mind whenever you go to one of these. Consider volunteering an hour or two. Organizers will work around class schedules. I'm sure that if each person would volunteer just an hour, the organizing committee would be forever grateful! And it's a great way to meet new people. One last thing on this topic - if you go to a convention, find that everything was nice, but they could have been quicker checking people in, or the line was too slow in the pattern room, or something like that, it was probably because there weren't enough volunteers. If you were one who didn't volunteer, you were one who could have made a difference. (I'm climbing down now.) I'm the membership chair for the Lake Country Basket Guild, in SE WI. We are now accepting 2002 memberships, the annual membership fee is $10 and this includes our quarterly Newsweave newsletter. We have about two feet of it from Anchorage to Talkeetna. Now we're talking! None of this wait until Christmas and hope for it for months as in previous years. Want some fun?! Sprinkle a pack of puppies on that precipitation and we're in for a good time. It's a free-for-all with eight of them on a mile long course of rumble, stumble, tumble in the white stuff. Trying to figure out whose first (potential leaders) and keeping track of "steady Teddy" in the back, with "whoops" one in between your legs, and "gang way" from those coming by in the rear is a real hoot. The only thing more fun is harnessing up the team and taking them out for some training runs. I guess good things come to those that wait since I will have to postpone that first run until I get back from the AMB convention. After that the runners will call my name and I will heed the call. The roundup for the rest of the year includes one more class in Anchorage. The Intertwine will be offered in Anchorage at Color Creek. For more information you can contact Mary Hertert at colorcreek@alaska.net. The tentative schedule for next year's classes will be posted in November.
