Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2001 9:48 AM From: Jill Choate To: Undisclosed-Recipient:; Got snow?? We do!! Now that's Alaska! Snow before Halloween and keep it coming. Don't you wish you were coming up to see the Iditarod in March? With a start of winter like this it's bound to be an adventure of a lifetime. Our winter chores will get a lot more fun now. It won't be long before I can hit the trail with three or four dogs and start getting them (and me) back into shape. For the moment puppy runs are still all that we can do. Uncle Sidney (the Australian Shepherd) tries to herd the pups into some semblance of order but they don't cooperate well. It's an all out free-for-all for the pups and my daughter Jennah and I try to keep up. Not an easy feat but it sure is a fun one. We head to Fairbanks this weekend for the Fanned Market and Intertwine classes. Then down south to Anchorage to introduce the "Roundabout" basket. Then to finalize October we're off to Michigan for the AMB convention teaching the Wall Pocket. Whew, then I'll take a deep breath and come home and run the dogs. You can come up and help if you'd like. We have one apprenticeship already filled for January. Come run dogs and make baskets for a week in a one-on-one tailor made situation. Top it off with an overnight dog sled trip to the bush with you at the helm. The real Alaska is just one step away. If something a bit tamer is your style then the Alaska Bush Basketry Retreat - Iditarod may tempt you? If not winter then the ABBR - Fish On! puts you in the middle of summer and fish. What a combination! For more information on the retreats you can check out www.jchoatebasketry.com/retreat.html. Until we meet on the trail.... Jill Choate J. Print one sheet with a couple of pictures on it, let it set overnight for the ink to dry really well, iron one of the pictures to see how it acts to heat and if ironing helps set the ink, then wash it and see what happens. Could be interesting! While at Wal-Mart in the fabric department I did see a packet of paper with fabric attached to it you could put thru a printer that said it was washable. I also saw the same thing at Hobby Lobby. My quilt is finished for our family reunion, the basket I put it in is complete and it all goes to Mississippi this weekend. It will be good to see family and hold them a little closer than usual. All the recent events make me really appreciate the fact they are all still there. Good luck on your quilt. All I have been able to think about it the site and the wooden base baskets, but I remember they had cherries on it, very well done, and nice darker stain. There were about 6 different styles I think. I hope someone can help me. I was in basket heaven as I met willow weavers from France, Lithuania, and Germany. I spent an after noon with a Miniature basket weaver and this was so interesting for me. I had ordered a miniature baby buggy and was able to see all of the steps to make it. I just enjoyed watching the people weave the willow baskets. It rained on and off the 3-day celebration. Activities Friday night were altered as a memorial for the people who were affected in the Terrorist attacks. Every part of the village square had baskets. Students from the basket school also were demonstrating. I visited the Deutches Korb Museum in Michelau, which is only 15 minutes from Lichtenfels. During my brief visit to Denmark I was able to spend the day with a Danish Basket weaver, Anne Folehave. Cita Schade had arranged it for me and I was so appreciative of her efforts. I met Cita through Weavers Words and was able to call her while I was there. I learned that basket weavers all over the world are the most giving and interesting people. I saw Anne's workshop and her willow patches. I purchased her book, which has her willow baskets and techniques in it. While looking through on of Annes willow books from Holland, I discovered that there was a willow room at a local city museum near the town where I would be staying. So when I got to my friends home near Utrecht, she called and we visited it. It had a display of how willow is harvested and the types of baskets that are used in that region. I found it interesting that they also weave a raft to help support the dikes from erosion. Some baskets were used to dry the herring in. I had a nice trip despite 21 days of rain. I have previously asked for businesses and people, in general, to think about sending a gift for our anniversary "Celebration" party. I know everyone is quite busy these days and with all that has gone on in our world, I'm beginning to get a little bewildered in not having a gift for everyone that attends our convention. We are celebrating 20 years of gathering together as basket weavers and in honor of that our goal is to give a nice gift to each one that will help in our celebration. We have just spent 2 1/2 days wrapping gifts for this occasion and I must admit we are running short on our count. So I'm asking once again to please think twice about sending something for this great occasion. I can't think of a better place to ask people to share something with someone else. Please include your name so you may be acknowledged by the individual who receives your gift. At this point, I'm asking again and extending the due date to the 19th of October. Please give this some consideration and forward those treasures to Carol Zeller 339 W. Burnham Street Battle Creek, MI 49015-2173 Let's put a smile on one of our many basket weaving friends. In the light on recent events, I just couldn't let it go. Thanks for your time. Be safe. God Bless you all. BJ<<< I received this via e-mail from someone I know. Don't know if this is true or not but you might just not go shopping on Oct. 31. Hi All - I think you all know that I don't send out hoaxes and don't do the reactionary thing and send out anything that crosses my path. This one, however, is a friend of a friend and I've given it enough credibility in my mind that I'm writing it up and sending it out to all of you. My friend's friend was dating a guy from Afghanistan up until a month ago. She had a date with him around 9/6 and was stood up. She was understandably upset and went to his home to find it completely emptied. On 9/10, she received a letter from her boyfriend explaining that he wished he could tell her why he had left and that he was sorry it had to be like that. The part worth mentioning is that he BEGGED her not to get on any commercial airlines on 9/11 and to not to go any malls on Halloween. As soon as everything happened on the 11th, she called the FBI and has since turned over the letter. This is not an email that I've received and decided to pass on. This came from a phone conversation with a long-time friend of mine last night. I may be wrong, and I hope I am. However, with one of his warnings being correct and devastating, I'm not willing to take the chance on the second and wanted to make sure that people I cared about had the same information that I did. That is why the student bought the basket, to see if I can find the straps for the twill tote she is making, (no pattern) she is to the point to add the straps. Beautiful photos! <<< IMHO it is easier to iron freezer paper to the cloth. Then cut it precisely 8.5x11 and it will go through your printer nicely. There is also a new liquid that you soak the cloth in first, let it dry, then proceed with the freezer paper/cloth in your printer. The presoaking makes the image more permanent. They were such affectionate jabs, you can tell how much he adores you. Kaye - about inkjet on fabric - basically inkjet ink is very water-soluble and will run with the smallest amount of mist (I know this from delivering 20"x30" posters in damp weather). The only way that I know of to make permanent or at least washable transfers is to use the iron-on transfer paper which your run though your printer with the image reversed and then with a very hot iron you fuse the inks to the fabric. You basically vaporize the inks and the color physically bonds to the fabric. Mary - about Eric Taylor - As far as I know he doesn't have a website right now and I don't think he has a catalog either. He does sell kits and molds of the baskets he is currently teaching. He travels around like many of the teachers do teaching at different host locations. He also is teaching a lot at conventions coming up so watch for him there. I think I have his email address, but I will have to dig it up. The class I took in NC was hosted by a long time friend of mine and she has had him to her place for the last couple of years. Also Mary, I have an HP 952C that I have been very happy with. The consumable are expensive, but the cartridges seem to last a while. It even comes with a utility (at least on the Mac) that shows you how much ink is estimated to be left. Someone mentioned buying cartridges at Sam's, but I found them to be more expensive (at least the cartridge I needed) than at Office Depot. Not everything at Sam's is a great deal so you just have to check and compare. Laurie - about pounded brown ash - it will depend on who you get your ash from. Bob Coker's Redi-Splint that is sold through Gratiot Lake Basketry is sanded smooth on both sides so there really isn't a wrong or right side. If you have splint from Martha Wetherbee or Nathan Taylor, their splint is prepared so that one side is the natural "satin" side you get with you split a growth ring and the other side may or may not be sanded depending on its thickness. With this kind of splint the satin side, when dry, should be very obvious when you move it under a light. When the splint is wet though it can be fairly had to tell the sides apart so I always mark the wrong side with a pencil before I start my basket. Also if you are really lucky you may get what is called "double satin" which is produced with a piece of satin splint is split again which gives you one piece of double satin and one on single satin. Jan - thanks for the nice complements about our recent Nantucket class. Everyone did great job! Eve - about cane lashing - I think you just really had some bad cane. Just like with reed you can get a bad piece or even bundle every once and a while. Cane is very strong and shouldn't be doing what you are describing. When I use it to lash my Nantucket's I don't use it all that wet, just damp, and I almost never have it break on me and it especially never breaks just sitting there. As it doesn't hold much water and dries out pretty quickly you will need to keep a sponge or spray bottle next to you and keep re-wetting the part you are working with (it doesn't really do that much good to wet the whole length as it will just dry back out before you get to that part). Cane is very flexible when wet, but can't take being sharply bent when dry. Hope this helps you solve your problem. You may want to give Hamburg cane a try. It is very white, as it is bleached, and takes dye and stain well. While it can be a little wimpy it is very very flexible. Lois - about your beach weekend painting - Your retreat sounds like the trips I take to NC and used to take to New Hampshire. It is just so nice to get away and be around other people who share your passion. I have gotten asked about how to join the MO Basketweavers guild and I am embarrassed to say I don't know the answer to the question. Also someone was asking when the NC membership was due. I have the same problem and always seem to be a member of the different guilds every other year as I always miss rejoining. So, I was wondering if representatives of the various guilds could post contact names and addresses and when memberships are due. I know this information sometimes appear on different websites, but it is often outdated as different membership chairs take over. I kind of got behind in my WW reading so if anyone posted a question specifically to me and I have not responded please ask again as I probably missed your note. Several months ago, I visited our local thrift shop after a class and found a beautiful oval potato basket. It is large, done in muted colors and the weaver even tucked the 3 main ribs down into the rim...very neat. It was in perfect shape (and it cost a whopping $2.50!), I toyed with the idea of milk painting it blue, but decided to leave it alone and use if for what it was intended...potatoes and onions. However, last week, I discovered a bad bad onion under my bag of potatoes. The onion had leaked over a small portion of the base and it smelled darn bad. I immediately wiped it out and gently scrubbed the spot with a soft brush and a mild detergent. Most of the spot came out, but the smell persists. Is there anything I can do to get that smell out? I left it on my lanai for a couple of days, but that did no good. Please tell me I won*t have to toss this masterpiece! Nancy Carlson--I am sending that magazine on Monday. If you have found an extra, just toss this one or pass it on. Darlene--I still have my kilims I bought in Turkey back in the 80*s and use them, too--how I wish I could get more! Enjoy the ones you bought. I am wondering how the mail service is on the mainland since the 11th of Sept. Most of us who weave in Hawaii have our supplies shipped via Priority and some of us are finding that it takes 2-3 weeks to get our stuff. Is it any better over there? Also, I am thinking our fairs this fall are going to be not so great. The ones on military posts are closed to the public and the job situation is so bad here, I don*t think the public fairs will do much better. How is this affecting the fairs where you are--if at all?
